Why do people constantly complain about Metro when it IS easier to use?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering. Metro is easier to use and understand than any previous Windows Interface. I can't see why so many people are so dead-set against it. It doesn't make it harder to open applications, the start menu is still there, application search works better, ect. Tell me what is so bad about it. People use the phase "Tablet Interface on an OS" all the time and it doesn't really mean anything. Metro is not harder to use just because it can be used on both a touchscreen and a computer.

Try this example:

- Go to start screen;

- Search any of your files;

- Right-click -> Send to -> whatever;

You can't with Metro. We used to with start menu.

It's not the metro UI by itself, it's having to constantly flop between metro and desktop that is annoying.

If it was all one or the other, I would be fine.

Also, I personally feel metro is designed for a touch interface. There no "minimize" app button I can find and keep thinking if this was a tablet / phone there would be a physical "minimum / run in background" button.

In addition, I feel they should have a start button, even if it mimics the windows logo button with metro at the bare minimum.

If you still can't see what people don't like about metro after reading all those posts then this thread is just a waste of interweb space.

Don't see you getting it by asking again and getting all the same replies.

Actually these types of threads are a rarity. We mostly get the 'omg Metro is fail, Windows 8 is Vista 2.0!'

Don't know what forums you're reading here at Neowin, but on the first two pages alone in the Windows Beta section, the split is pretty much 50/50 with half of the 'dislike topics' being replies to other topics where those against got shouted down or overwhelmed by the 'suck it up, you just hate change' crowd.

Metro is designed for a touch interfaces. Microsoft themselves have said that Metro was a design language created for Windows Phone 7. They've also told developers that if they design Metro apps, then they should be touch first and to embrace Windows 8 Touch technology.

I know others would say otherwise, but it's right there in black and white. From the horse's mouth they say.

Than you may be right. I have been very inactive at Neowin for the past couple of weeks.

People don't want easy, they want productive

Actually, he has a good point. From what I read, which is unfortunately a lot ;) ), very few people have fully expressed their reasoning behind the dislike of Windows 8. I say very few because some have given solid reasons as to why they don't like it.

Throwing out the relativeness of aesthetics, all you really see is, "Next Vista/ME", "Not intuitive", "Less efficient", "Slower", "Interrupts workflow", "Unproductive" "Takes an extra second to shutdown", etc.

If I had to guess, I would say that 2 out of every 10 "I don't like it" posts give viable reasons as to how it does any of the above. So, it's not a matter of "reading all those posts". It's a matter of these posts actually having something of substance within them. I don't mind somebody debating the pros and cons, merits or demerits of any given person/place/thing. But, if you're going to debate, offer supporting evidence for your argument.

Anecdotally, I went to lunch with my sister yesterday. We were discussing something (can't remember what it was) and she told me that's how her students respond to certain things. When asked why something is the way it is or why they like something, they answer, "'cause it is." or "'cause I do."

After 2 weeks of using the CP, I've realized I've been wrong! I love Metro UI and I support it being driven up our collective @$$!

Seriously though, why do people get bent out of shape when we voice our opinion of not liking it? They get all defensive and threatened, I don't get it.

We have to explain our selves; that we don't want a full screen start menu, that the old start menu worked just fine, that we could multitask better. The retort is that the new start screen is just the same thing, or multitasking is the same, I mean who can really multitask across 4 or more windows anyway? All this has been said before.

It'll be a shame if there's no compromise regarding Metro UI, I believe the hardcore users will stay with Windows 7, and the easy time users will go with Windows 8. Although I will probably pick up a Windows 8 tablet, amusing it can compete spec and size wise to the current Android and Apple products.

Metro UI was designed for touch screens and smartphones. When I use my mouse and keyboard on the desktop, the interface is unintuitive and difficult to use - and I'm currently running it as my main OS and have been for a couple of days now. The "drag and close" function for Metro apps is not as elegent as the "X" for desktop - yet It works great for smartphones and tablets.

Give me a choice to install without Metro or to only use Metro with Metro apps - let me run my desktop as I want to.

Why do people always have to resurrect dead topics when the fighting just starts to calm down?

Metro is new, so some people hate it.

Metro is different, so some people hate it.

There's your reasons. Now let's bury this topic again!

Wow. Just...wow. This has got to be a troll, otherwise this is the most ignorant post I have seen on this issue yet.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • I'm no Apple fan, and have never bought an Apple product for myself. But I'd argue that where you think Apple is behind regarding an OLED display, that the vast majority of people out there wouldn't even know or care for an OLED. Apple have struck the balance well to create a price point that works, and I hope that PC manufactures, and Microsoft take notice. I'd argue that Asus will struggle to compete with the Neo BECAUSE they put in a more expensive OLED that many people won't actually notice with its deeper blacks. Most people wouldn't care either that their screen is stuck at 60Hz! When I bought a 4k monitor (future proof and for the space), my laptop could only push that out at 30Hz, and it worked fine for my needs for 1.5 years! Heck, the average human eye can't see more than 90Hz in many situations!! So while they are trying to differentiate themselves, and it may well gain them a few customers, for the most part, I think they're missing the point of what the Neo is for.
    • I disagree. Boomer execs only want one thing; money money money. The original fans of the series want a specific reboot that focuses on the vibe and feel of the original series. Boomers don't want that because then they can't have a 8 to 9 figure return. This was canceled because of greed.
    • Meta rolls out Meta Business Agent globally on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger by David Uzondu Image via Meta Meta is expanding Meta Business Agent, a feature that the social media giant promises will help businesses deliver "personalized experiences for customers using AI," launching the tech globally. Before this global release, Meta Business Agent used to be a free test called "Business AI" during a testing phase that started in October 2024. Meta picked India, Mexico, and Brazil to test the software, gathering data from over one million active shops that used the chat tools. The agent works on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, helping shops answer customer questions, check incoming leads, book appointments, and recommend products from a catalog. Meta said that the business agent can match your brand's unique tone when speaking to customers, and that it plans to improve the feature to handle "daily operations" like market research, product insights, calendars, and rival research. Soon, users will find these AI-supported shops easily by typing names in the WhatsApp search bar. Image via Meta Apart from the Business Agent, Meta is also introducing the Meta Business Agent Platform, a new agentic platform that provides the infrastructure needed to build, customize, and run virtual helpers at scale. With the Platform, companies link their bots to services like Shopify, Zendesk, and Shopee using firm-level controls, guardrails, and metrics to define strict rules. This setup lets coders build custom behaviors, keeping customers happy with direct answers. Speaking of agents, you might have heard that hackers recently broke into Instagram accounts by simply asking the Meta AI support assistant on the mobile app to hand over control. You can check out our coverage on that here.
