Personally i think Metro should have been like Windows Media Center, if you wish it can start full screen when Windows starts. The end user doesn't need to know Windows is running behind it, that's certainly the experience the family get with the Media Center in the front room.

Same with Metro, if you want it to have it start when the user logs on. If not just give the user the desktop environment, there's nothing wrong with choice is there? Metro doesn't need to interfere with the desktop environment at all.

Power users are happy, and your basic computer user can use Metro and never know there's a desktop behind it.

Windows 8 would be received so much better by just allowing users some basic choices.

This has probably been said already, but if we're going to be stuck with metro, at least allow the Start screen to be displayed on the left side, kind of like the charms menu, rather then go full screen and cover up the desktop and everything I was working on. That is VERY distracting and the number 1 issue for me.

I think people will quickly get used to the new gestures and gimmicks like moving your mouse in one of the corners, using the charms etc. It's sad some people won't give it a chance. Some of the OPs suggestions ruin the whole Metro idea, this is what I'd love to see;

- Desktop apps appearing in the app switcher at the top left. Now there are essentially two types of apps (Metro and classic) and two ways to switch (taskbar and left switching pane)

- Remove the taskbar, it's obsolete with desktop icons. Certainly DON'T dare to bring back the ominous start button, it's as obsolete as hell. Remove window chrome and let them close using the "drag down" paradigm that Metro apps have.

- Improve the App Preview apps dramatically (really, the CP versions are for kids --')

- Shut down/Restart/Control Panel option in the user flyout menu.

I still can't see why the desktop can't be the default environment on laptops and desktops, and metro on tablets and phones. It makes no sense to force everyone into one paradigm. Honestly I think this will just push more people toward GNU/Linux, which gives users actual choices instead of forcing it down their throats.

that Dot Matrix guy probably has too much time in his work to defend Windows 8 like mad... or MS is paying him. Anyway, what everyone that is protouch interface is failing to see is shown next:

it is NOT ACCURATE and does NOT ALLOW SEE below the fingers.

Because of this simple fail the mouse will reign supreme AND because of this, when anybody solves the two problems above will come with another way to interact the pcs that isn't touch, when that happens even the keyboard will render obsolete and then a change for the sake of the better will be executed.

With this said, such interface will remove all this touch BS that removes accuracy and renders GUIs pretty much less efficient than their mouse keyboard counterpart... The mind that is, once we're able to read and press our thoughts into a pc this madness will end. Patiently awaiting for it... if ever.

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
