Hello folks,

I've got a mystery I'm trying to solve here, and I'm hoping you can help me find the tools to find the answer. Very frequently, right when I sit down at my desk, I hear the Windows default device disconnection sound, "BA-dump." It does not happen every time, and I never hear an associated device connection sound along with it. I don't know what is causing it. I know that logically it seems that it would be a loose USB connection somewhere that was getting bumped somehow when I sit down, but I've checked connections and haven't found a source yet.

So, my question is, can i use the Event Viewer, or any other utility, to somehow match up the sound with a system event? If yes, which specific log do i need to examine?

Can't help with a utility, but if this a desktop and you have not yet checked it could be loose connection on the mother board for the the front panel USB, if you have one.

I do have front panel USB connectors, but they are both functioning normally even after just sitting down and hearing the sound a moment ago. And I'm 100% sure I did not bump the desk at all. It's beginning to drive me a bit crazy!

It used to happen with my fingerprint reader. If it's a non-critical device like that, you can try disabling in Device Manager and see if it still plays the sound. Or you can use a trial version of this: http://www.everstrike.com/usbsecurity/help/event-log.htm

Why don't you unplug all devices and mark each cable with the port in which it was plugged in. Then sit and see if the sound comes. If yes then it is not something externally fitted. If no then start plugging in each cable to the original port and repeat the process.

Good question. My problem is that I have 3 PC's sharing a single set of speakers, so determining the source manually as you describe becomes a bit of a pain. Looks like i may have to do that, though, if there is no way to track it down in some sort of log or event.

I swear, it's the strangest thing. I've tried disconnecting various devices that i felt might be the culprit, but no luck so far. And if it's just a loose connection that's getting bumped when i sit down, why is there never a matching unexplained sound for the device connection? It's always only a disconnect sound. Weird stuff.

could be power related.??

I have that usb unplug sound everytime we turn on a set of lights that is on the same circuit as the computer.??It makes absolutely no sense other than perhaps a peripheral is powering off slightly and coming back online in that same instant.??The only thing that can be done is to put the lights on a different power circuit.??It is the most bizarre thing that I have come across recently. No event logs, no alerts, nothing at all. can't even see it in the dev manager.
