I dont know much about child birth, but arent you NOT supposed to do ANY pulling on the baby, but let the mother push it out?

Did the doctors have no experience in delivering babies? People used to give birth at home without and doctors/nurses and I don't think there were too many problems. What had those doctors been smoking?

uhh... back before modern healthcare and delivery when peopel only did it at home with a birthmother. There was a significantly higher death at birth, both for mother and baby.
