My subsequent post was what I was trying to get at, but couldn't find the words at the time. The kids at this age have no choice. In this case, did the kid even want that hair style - by the look of her face expression, I would say no. Children aren't themselves when a parent dresses them into something that is deemed as seriously uncool. When we start talking about older people (i.e. teens+), then I would agree with you as they generally make a lot of choices for themselves.

[. . .]

If she didn't want to have her hair like that, and wasn't given a choice, I agree with you :) I think the photo might have been taken after she was told she couldn't be in the school photo, while she was upset; I could be wrong, as it doesn't say.

I understand your point. But that is the same point people make when arguing against allowing same-sex couples to adopt or when arguing against allowing children who have gender identity disorder to be themselves. It's a dangerous view because it harms progress. People are worried that children seen as "different" will be bullied, so they try to ensure children aren't themselves, instead of attempting to solve the problem of bullying itself. Preventing bullying by harming progress is not good. Some bullying will always occur, anyway, even if children are stopped from having their hair the way they want. The problem of bullying should be dealt with in ways that don't harm anyone else (the children being prevented from expressing themselves or the same-sex couples looking to adopt).

Your doing it again, bringing it into every thread. I don't know how many times this has to be pointed out to you over the years. That said, Schools need dress codes, and I am a big supporter of Uniforms because in middle school, diversity is less discovered through ethnic and diverse clothing, but more along the liners of whose rich and whose poor based on their cloths further dividing the students. With everything taken into consideration, let her have her hair in the picture.

I my friend's kid wears her's like that all the time. She had long (down to her butt) hair!

wow... I wouldnt want hair that long LOL specially since it's hot too much here...

Agreed, with respect to the uniforms.

Example: in this city it tended to be the case that the secular public board schools usually would have no dress code, yet the public Catholic board did for the post-secondary schools (but none for K-8). So in the case of my latter K-8 years I had friends come in with pricey jeans and hoodies (had a brand war of sorts ;)). Then after four years of wearing uniforms in high school, we're now at the stage where clothing choices matter little.

Not many would actually like to wear uniforms, finding every opportunity to skirt the dress code ever so slightly (not tucking in shirts, ties left hanging on necks, running shoes, etc), but at least after those years we become less judgemental over clothing choices. So we can get away dressing like idiots in university. ;)

I try to not bring it into other threads, but I had to back up my point. I don't expect people to pick up on my examples and start irrelevant discussions about those; the examples are there merely to back up my on-topic point, and there's no reason why anyone has to discuss anything other than my point :) I just felt compelled to make my point that people should not be forced to not be themselves (which is what it appeared the poster was implying).

I understand your point about uniforms. Since my original post in this thread, and since reading your point regarding uniforms, I'm now not sure whether I agree with uniforms or not, and whether I agree with them disallowing such hairstyles.

okiez.... my sis used to have her hair about down to her butt and it took her 45 minutes to wash her hair alone...

Haha, my sister had the same. I used to take the mickey by saying that it automatically wiped her own backside on the bog :D

Though brushing out tangles and drying would take me about 40 mins to do - luckily she got it trimmed and started doing her own hair then. Long hair requires so much maintenance

and her's is shorter than mine now!!!!!

dress code is dress code... follow or not... simple...

Bow made of hair is not a "braid", nor is it a "hair band or ribbon". The admins there were trying to stretch the definition of both to claim that she violated the dress code, when she didn't. If anything, it would be considered a bun (which apparently isn't banned there). Simple.

O.o since when is that a braid ? i think the hair looks flipping sweet

Yet again, someone with some sense here. Some of the people posting here (and the school admins) need to look in a ****ing dictionary and learn what braided hair is, and what it is not. I'm guessing that the girl's father (who is a hairdresser) knows much better than the idiots at that school what constitutes a braid, and he followed the rules in the dress code to the letter.

    • WTF? I am not taking a video of myself to access a site or to create an account. What are they thinking? I don’t even have a webcam on my main desktop PC. The powers to be are really looking to normalize the taking of pics or submitting ID for everything. I afraid most people will end up just going along with it.
