Would it be possible for Neowin to support the Tapatalk forum browser app for Android? (might be available on other platforms too, I'm not sure)

I did a search for this but only found posts by members suggesting it's not possible due to custom code, but I think the devs will have a better idea!

This is the only forum I visit regularly that doesn't work in Tapatalk :(

Thanks!

There's already some threads about this, and it looks like it won't be implemented. I think using the mobile site is good enough though.

There's nothing wrong with the mobile site, it's actually one of the best mobile implementations I've ever seen. I do really like it.. however, Tapatalk is a native app which offers some benefits: -

1. We have direct access to the Android sharing API. I could, for example, instantly share a thread to Twitter or Facebook just by hitting "share" and selecting Twitter/Facebook.

2. Tapatalk allows us to attach files to posts.

3. Tapatalk is skinnable, so I'm using an almost completely black theme, which uses a considerable amount less battery power than Neowin's mobile site, which is almost completely white and very power hungry for AMOLED screens.

4. With Tapatalk all of the forums we visit are stored in one place, so we don't need to switch between apps constantly.

5. Tapatalk can raise Android notifications when people reply to subscribed topics.

I would love it if this could be supported!

According to the Tapatalk forum team the app supports ads:

http://support.tapatalk.com/threads/banner-ads.7106/

To what extent they support ads I have no idea, but I wonder if somebody could have another look at this, as everyone from Neowin seems to be of the impression it doesn't support ads at all.

The benefits for Neowin would be that the site would be advertised in the list of Tapatalk supported forums and it would give people more ways to access the site.

from what I remember, there is a specific reason why Neowin doesn't add tapatalk support

something about one of their plugins being incompatible causing tapatalk not to work correctly or something like that

Appreciate the feedback, but we're not going to support that third party app. IPB has an official app which you can use if you want a "semi-native" experience, but for the most part, the mobile skin is easier to manage, and works for the most part.

In that case, could I request a dark mobile skin? Black colours really do make a massive difference to battery life on oled screens. :D

That went away with the last major update (Pegasus). I don't think they plan on bringing back a darkside theme for mobile. This has all been brought up before. They mainly want to cut down on the amount of effort it takes when updating the site. The less themes they have to mess with every time, the better. Which, in turn, means a smoother, more reliable experience for all of us.

Also, I really don't think the difference in battery life is as great as you're making it out to be.

Of course there's a big difference. Amoled screens switch off black pixels completely which means they're drawing no power whatsoever, whereas white pixels use three times as much power as pixels on an LCD counterpart. Considering the display is the biggest power drainer on all modern smart phones, the difference can mean you get a few hours more simply by using dark wallpapers and themes for websites.

My main beef with the current mobile site is that it's difficult to view larger topics. There needs to be a last-page button and/or a drop-down page selector. With that and the lack of an easy way to navigate to the front page and back keeps me from using it.

So true :/

I thought that was going to be added back. did it get put off and forgotten about or something Timan?

Can you maybe add the option to view the people who liked something?

I also have a couple of other gripes with Mobile, but I can't remember them right now, it's all rush rush now that I see that you're sitting down and fixing Mobile a bit.

I'm all excited! ^___^

Might actually just remove the Like feature completely, and make that a quote/reply button.

I really hate the default ipb mobile theme :p

Oh great, better not mention my other suggestions seeing how my thoughts get spinned around... >_>

Jesus...

And yes. the default theme looks cheesy, but it's still better than a lot of what's out there.

Maybe make the "like" action pickable after touching the post (like the current implementation for quote/reply/edit)

That's where the people who liked a post could be listed, it's easily collapsable, out-of-the-way and keeps functionality (even adds some).

Oh and the mobile view of member profiles is very unsatisfactory...

Way too little info, especially the parts that interest me :p

hmmm... no last buttons and I dont have that quick menu anymore and it does nothing if I click my username... stock droid browser....

have no space for any others....

I also agree on the dark theme thing as well it would help battery life.

    • OpenAI is making Codex more useful in Chrome and the cloud by Pradeep Viswanathan OpenAI's Codex now has more than 5 million users, up nearly 4x from earlier this year. To further accelerate Codex's growth among developers, OpenAI today announced that it has agreed to acquire Ona, a company that builds secure cloud execution and orchestration technology for developers. Ona will enable developers to run Codex with persistent and controlled cloud infrastructure for long-running agentic workflows. Right now, most Codex execution happens locally on developers' laptops and PCs, and the agents work continuously for hours. Through Ona, OpenAI aims to make Codex agents keep working for days without being tied to a user’s local machine or an active session. This will be an important capability for enterprises that want to deploy AI agents in production while maintaining control over infrastructure, data, security boundaries, credential scope, logging, and review workflows. Like any acquisition, the deal is still subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the deal closes, OpenAI and Ona will continue to operate as separate companies. After closing, Ona’s team will join the Codex team to improve developer workflows. Alongside the Ona acquisition announcement, OpenAI today introduced a few Codex updates. Developers can now save Codex rate limit resets and use them later instead of losing them when they are not needed immediately. OpenAI is also adding a referral option where users can invite a friend to Codex and get a saved rate limit reset. OpenAI today also announced a developer mode for browser use in Chrome and the Codex in-app browser. With this mode, Codex can use the Chrome DevTools Protocol to debug web apps, inspect pages, and work more directly with browser-based development workflows. Developers can use this when they want Codex to profile JavaScript, inspect console output and network traffic, examine web page states including the DOM and applied styles, and more.
