Surely they won't just check my Win 8 RP key, they gave that one for free to me.

It is interesting to note that Windows 8 Release Preview users who have not purchased an earlier version of Windows can use the Upgrade to install the full version of Windows 8.

Mr LeBlanc had made clear in his post

People moving from the Windows 8 Preview will need make sure you have an underlying license for either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
