SAS hero jailed: Sergeant sentenced to two years after gun found

Recommended Posts

An SAS veteran has been locked up for two years after a gun and ammo was found in his garage at home.

The hero sergeant was pulled from secret operations in Helmand when armed police discovered the semi-automatic Glock pistol following a tip-off.

They also found 300 rounds of ammunition.

A specially convened court martial heard he had a distinguished record of bravery in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The soldier had been at the heart of some of the most fierce firefights against the Taliban and Saddam Hussein?s forces.

But last night he was behind bars in Colchester Military Correction Centre after admitting illegally keeping a gun at his Hereford home. http://www.mirror.co...ntenced-1169602 Served his country put his life on the line for it and now is serving 2 years for this?!? Give him asylum in the U.S and make him a citizen asap.

The law is the law, he doesn't get special privileges no one forced him to sign up to the SAS.

Yeah I guess the British don't care one bit about their men in uniform. He probably nearly died several times but yep law is law who cares!

Backwards ass country. Go die for it, but keep a handgun and die IN it

Send in SEAL team six and extract him and bring him to the U.S lol.

Yeah thats quite a leap in logic, I agree with the law so suddenly I don't give a toss about my countries men and women in the army????

I donate to Help 4 Heroes a British Charity that supports wounded soldiers, I also help with fund raisers for said charity, I have massive amounts of respect for someone who signs up to defend my country and way of life, I am disgusted at how my government treats the current and ex-forces.

Having said that the law is the law, you can't pick and choose what laws not to abide by because you don't agree with it, he is supposed to be the best of the best, an example to the rest of the forces. They can't just let him get away with it.

And this is an example of why I don't want the U.S to turn into England+ having a "evil" gun that's "sole purpose is to kill" will get you prison time, that's B.S to the highest degree.

I love how you attack the Country and not the man for violating the law..

What ever he did for his country is secondary to following the laws OF that country..

Just because you are a vet, or a hero doesn't just mean you can have illegal weapons, or speed, or rape someone, or anything else. In a country founded on law, the law must apply to everyone. You can't just pick and choose who it applies too.

And yes, I'm sure the man that fought for his country wants the US to charge in shooting his people all because he did something illegal.. Would make him one hell of a hero then.

Its B.S it even got to that but that's the British two years for having that lol. Messed up.

Who said guns are evil?

The law has banned handguns, he had a gun, hence jail time.

Oh come on the government bans them because they want the people to believe they are bad dangerous things hence "evil".

I don't understand, there's no exemption to the law for him, although he's in the armed forces? Do they leave their guns on base when they go home for off time and such? What about the armed police you have there, are they allowed to have guns at home? If them why not the soliders? And all this from a tip..who's to say the "tip" didn't plant the stuff there. I know you all have low gun crime violence over there, but this seems pretty stupid imo.

No, the government bans them to stop people walking into schools and shooting up people which is why they banned handguns after the Dunblane tragedy, they are trying to crack down on the gun culture infiltrating the UK, to stop rival gangs killing innocent people in the crossfire which has happened quite a few times over the years, little kids losing their lives.

Before you say it, the answer isn't to give everyone guns.

I'll just leave this here for all the Americans and how many are saved by their guns.. http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/07/28/guns-ownership-around-the-world-graphic/

Regardless the US is a lost cause.

It would take all the armies of a world searching for a year to find all the guns in the US.. Not to mention generations of education to remove the deep seeded cultural paranoia so many Americans seem to have to anyone having authority.. Honestly don't know how a country can survive when so many of it's people don't respect or trust their own government, police, armies, doctors, scientists, etc..

btw.. from the sounds of it, he was convicted in a Military Court.. which probably explains the long sentence.. Then again having an Assault Weapon in most countries is gonna get you some time behind bars.. It's not a farmer with a shotgun for duck hunting.

Armed police in the UK rarely even carry their weapons, they get them on a case by case basis..

And in many armies in the world your weapons don't leave the base [ unless deployed ].. you don't just take them home and put them in your garage.

So no, there's no exemption for him, he broke the law, and from the looks of it, he broke the Military law, which means he get to spend time in a cell, and I can assure you this wouldn't be some obscure law that he wouldn't have known about. He would know full well the restrictions on the firearm if it was military issue, and if it wasn't military issue, then he got it illegally, not by just walking into a walmart.

Yep, lets not teach the people to be responsible lets just ban things we think are dangerous! I absolutely hate the protectionist culture. If its remotely dangerous it needs to be regulated or banned! Hell I can't even own the type of dog I have in the U.K. Oh crap someone stabbed someone with a blade over 6 inches long ban them!! Someone killed a few people with a gun BAN THEM! A dog bit and killed an old lady BAN THEM! I couldn't live in a world like that.

As many know I am a ardent gun supporter and have had to pull mine once. That said, the law is the law and if you feel the need to break the law as a protest then I can support you if you also take the consequences for your actions. That said, this wasn't out of protest and even if it was be prepared to take the consequences. If this soldier was a pedophile you wouldn't be asking for leniancy regardless of his past actions. If you want to discuss gun control laws in the UK make a post about it. This soldier brought it on himself.

Having a gun and molesting a kid are on two completely different levels.

This isn't about the ethics of gun culture/ownership.

The fact is the government has banned handguns, he has a handgun, he broke the law, he goes to jail. If there was any kind of leeway I'm pretty sure it would have been taken but they cant just let him off the hook.

And I think that's B.S for the reasons I stated.

So you think breaking the law is OK if your a hero? Let me rephrase it, are you in favor of selective enforcement of the law? If so do you realise that is one of the number one forms of corruption in developed countries. Having a problem with a law and not enforcing it are two different things which is why the San Francisco police chief openly stating he would not cooperate with ICE agents makes me so angry. It was Lincoln the first GOP president who was quoted to of said breaking the law is never right even if you disagree with it.

Well said.

You can't set up different standards of laws and punishment just because of who the person is, their job, etc.

If he needed a firearm, there are ways to legally get them. I'm not sure about Handguns in the UK, but I know in Canada it's a rather long process, but you can legally own one. And if it's not legal, then it's NOT LEGAL. No one to blame but himself.

Having a gun and molesting a kid are on two completely different levels.

Legally speaking, both are criminal offences punishable by jail time. We can say one is worse all we want, but the law sees no difference.

This is why we made laws in the first place, so Everyone has to live by the same rules. I don't want there to be some arbitrary lines that some people can cross and others can't.

And I think that's B.S for the reasons I stated.

Are you British?

Why do you care?

Keep your nose out of British affairs....

(I can't remember any of the other retorts you used in the other threads when people were attacking America)

I think the law is stupid. That's what I think and I've stated my distain with it already in this thread. I think he shouldn't have had to go to jail in the first place.I think a culture that acts like a nanny is B.S.

Why? If you all are going to be hypocrits and wont butt out then why should I. I see you all nosing in our affairs all the time. You all wont butt out so.

It is well known that UK gun laws are even more draconian than gun laws is Russia but that isn't the point here.

    • For a guy who claims to hate Farage and the ignorant, gullible, rightwing racist skinheads sponsored by Putin that his lies represent, you sure are quoting them time and time and time again, mate. I guess you're conveniently ignoring the fact that your country and commonwealth just happened to work much better when it was still part of the E.U.? Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
    • Do you live in the U.K? Do any of the people here that are against the UK leaving the E.U, live in the U.K? If not then why are you bothered? If you do live here then it is a different thing . Brexit was a good idea, should have done it years before, it was done badly, but the idea was good. You are saying the same thing as remainers do, oh we did what Putin wanted, we listened to the lies and Farage. I hate Farage and never believed most of what he said, certainly did not believe the £350m a week for the NHS. But we did pay a lot of money to the E.U and yes some of it came back, but what is the point of paying it out for only some of it to come back? Get out of the E.U, no money to them and in theory we can use the money to do things in the country. I said in theory, but our governments are a total and complete waste of space. No matter what colour rosette they wear. You and others say it was a mistake and yet the two main parties in the U.K are not looking at rejoining the EU, I wonder why that is? I was not tricked by anyone. Makes no odds now, we are out and have been for 10 years, what we need is a decent government to run the country. All they do is shout at each other like a load of kids and seems to do nothing and make this country more into a police and nanny state. Getting more like China all the time.

    • Yeah... The root of my comment, ostensibly, is how to spin the story via the actual technical merits of the solution! * Decentralized (aka federated) solution with built-in encrypted ephemeral message transport, * Transport via Relays (intermediary servers) with no message archival, * Second configurable pathway are actual email servers (if DNS records are programmed accordingly) via IMAP protocols carriage, * "Chat-over-Email" is the design pattern adopted; it can either leverage full-blown Email Server (must use the INBOX folder) to exchange all received messages/edits/reactions (so be weary of notifications overloads) [best practice is creating a separate email acct used explicitly for federated chat purposes!] or leverage its built-in Relay Server mechanism which actually resides on-device (by default but can be configured otherwise), * By virtue of be a decentralized/federated model, all other intermediary servers who may pass-along messages (while the recipient's final relay/device is inaccessible) cannot snoop on the messages due to the encrypted nature of contents. The intermediaries may, however, analyze the metadata due to the simple fact that routing mechanisms require hints for relay destinations. Unfortunately, whomever is posting about DeltaChat across socials are misleading with "zero metadata" claims -- especially when the Relays (according to their own technical documents) mandate the addition of chat-version metadata and other decorations in order to actually transport any message. -- Based on this summary, I'd prefer if they'd better dual-path message transport (email server add-in, federated relay engine) rather than patch-on email protocols to existing federated social media frameworks. They're frankensteining something rather than extending widely-deployed technology stacks.
