SAS hero jailed: Sergeant sentenced to two years after gun found

I think the law is stupid. That's what I think and I've stated my distain with it already in this thread. I think he shouldn't have had to go to jail in the first place.I think a culture that acts like a nanny is B.S.

Well clearly the people in that culture don't.. otherwise they would have elected people to change it..

I think you'll find that the overwhelming majority of the UK favors their current gun laws.. But that's right, when you want people to be free, you mean free to make choice you approve of.

Why? If you all are going to be hypocrits and wont butt out then why should I. I see you all nosing in our affairs all the time. You all wont butt out so.

So we have to butt out about America but you feel you can butt in on everyone elses affairs, spoken like a true American.

It is well known that UK gun laws are even more draconian than gun laws is Russia but that isn't the point here.

Having a handgun gets you two years in prison  must suck to fight for a country that will put you in jail for that kind of thing. I know he broke the law and has to do the time but it still sucks that he put his life on the line for his country and gets 2 years for IMO a B.S reason.

No one forced him into service, he chose to join the armed forces. He shouldn't get special privileges just because he signed on a dotted line.

I haven't butted in to anyone elses affairs besides this one. Blanket statement much?

BS Reason to you..

To the country he served, that Passed those laws, not so much..

Also as I said, it looks like he was tried by the military, so there may be far more reaching reasons.. Like stealing the gun from the army he serves for example ? Not following the UK equipment of the Uniform Code.. There may be more than he simply had a gun at his house, that lead to the 2 years..

Awww you're such a good defender of the British, where were you in the threads about American gun ownership. You just feel the need to defend the British?

I've been in several gun threads.. I just don't live there.. You aren't gonna change my views, I'm not gonna change yours.. it's like talking to a wall.. So I chose to play videogames or something instead..

Only reason I'm here was the title got my interest.. and I haven't closed the tab yet lol..

An SAS veteran has been locked up for two years after a gun and ammo was found in his garage at home.

The hero sergeant was pulled from secret operations in Helmand when armed police discovered the semi-automatic Glock pistol following a tip-off.

They also found 300 rounds of ammunition.

A specially convened court martial heard he had a distinguished record of bravery in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The soldier had been at the heart of some of the most fierce firefights against the Taliban and Saddam Hussein?s forces.

But last night he was behind bars in Colchester Military Correction Centre after admitting illegally keeping a gun at his Hereford home. http://www.mirror.co...ntenced-1169602 Served his country put his life on the line for it and now is serving 2 years for this?!? Give him asylum in the U.S and make him a citizen asap.

Here is the real issue what if while he was out his garage was broken into(which happens alot in some places) and the gun+ammo was taken by some low life crack head now think about it a well cared for fire arm in the hands of some street scum. This is what the law tries to prevent.

Doesn't mean he kept it there all the time. For all we know he could of had a friend over and when he left he called the cops and the gun happened to be there. He might of had it out just for the time being.

LOL seriously? I'm a responsible gun owner so I'm looking at it from my point of view if he had it out in the garage and if I was him i'd be fairly close by. And if someone broke in lol come on, broke into a former SAS members house? You think the crack head would of survived long enough to get the gun?

I was kinda carrying on from the "what if while he was out" scenario.

I was kinda carrying on from the "what if while he was out" scenario.

Who knows he could of been home or away not many details on that so. But for me if its in a garage i'm pretty damn close to it that's for sure and to me if hes SAS I think he would have some sense not to leave a gun unattended in a garage surely he has more brains than that.

Then he would be looking at a FAR FAR harsher sentence than 2 years if he had killed a burglar with an illegal weapon.

He was overseas on operations, you don't leave a gun out illegal or not in the garage where anyone could get it and did stumble upon it.

Yeah I forgot you're not allowed to defend yourself in England.Where in the story does it say he was overseas when the gun was found?

Handguns ownership is illegal in the UK because their use is to be judged primarily for wounding/killing other people (whether defensively or otherwise). Shotgun and hunting rifle ownership (with appropriate licensing of course) is legal, because these are considered to have legitimate uses that do not involve shooting people (ergo, hunting). The law is the law, and whether or not we should have legalised handgun ownership in the UK is an entirely different matter. There's very little to this story - the guy broke what is quite a serious law in the UK, he gets jail time. If someone else down the street had broken the same law, they'd also get jail time. Serving in the SAS does not exempt you from this law, and does not change anything. We do not bend laws simply for military service, and any notion to the contrary is ridiculous.

I know that, Still though sad thing that it had to come to this. To me from my background and culture is a B.S law. British people came to the gun threads that involved gun ownership saying how they thought we had lax laws, well i'm stating my opinion on this that I think its too strict and this is what happens.

Helmand is in Afghanistan fyi.

Oh no we're allowed to defend ourselves just so long as you're willing to spend years in a gym to gain the power to kill with one punch. Don't get me wrong i am pro-gun im just against the sheer amount some people seem to own and sots that are available to the public i mean Joe average does not need something made for G.I Joe.

Ok so he was over seas when it was found, solves that question. Didn't know if that place was in England or not apparently not. Anyway if the U.K authorities want to get rid of it they can ship it to me along with the ammo, I will dispose of the ammo in a safe manner :D

The average joe doesn't get rocket launchers and tanks lol. A gun is a gun doesn't matter what it looks like they all do the same thing and that's shoot a bullet through the open end.

That's odd in the UK you can legally own a Tank just so long as you have a full drivers license.

You can here too but come on now does the average joe own a tank? Nope does a millionair/billionair own tanks, yep. Hardly the average joe. The average joe here has to save up to buy a gun so having a tank is way out of reach and even then the action which makes the tank actually fire has to be demilled I believe. I don't know i'm just an average joe I have no experience with tanks lol.

You can actually own a tank in the UK :)

And in the US, in some states you can own rocket launchers, howitzers, etc.. That's just nuts..

In Canada we have no real issues with you own rifles and shotguns for hunting.. [ and defense of Person.. not property, insurance covers that ].. so long as you get licensed [ we are sure you aren't nuts ], and secure the weapons property.

You can even own handguns if you are willing to go through the process..

Gun Control, not Gun Banning..

Actually they aren't that expensive to get second hand.. Cost more to maintain though..

I remember there was guy in London that used to drive around in a Pink tank all the time.. Didn't even have to pay the congestion charges :D

    • For some reason I suddenly have the urge to go shopping at Sears.
    • So I did a quick test based on 3+ different public instances from the litany at searx.space ... and it spins everything rather differently. It seems that SearXNG is a meta-search engine (queries multiple search indexes rather than only Google's or Bing's or Wikipedia's or Reddit's) that operates in two modes: > public instances ... each instance opens itself to outside users who piggyback on its cached search history; this instance's own identity becomes known/tracked but end-users are hidden similar to an anonymization proxy; this instance's querying of major search indexes may be API based [rated limited, blocked, etc.]). > private instances ... your private install/instance that itself queries multiple (configurable) search indexes of crawled web content; every major Search Engine associates all traffic to your private instance (so your traffic is tracked via network usages) but client-side tracking (your own browser/computer specs) is flushed because it's a "server" doing the querying rather than your browser. My test asked the same 1 question to the 3+ engines and they all returned vastly different results: some had CAPTCHA failures against Google, some had failures against Wikipedia, and the actual results were also different -- some had auto-complete enabled, others returned a wikipedia highlighted excerpt despite the Wikipedia failure (hinting at results being cached from previous keyword matching), and others just gave an Are-You-Human non-CAPTCHA loop before returning random results. So this begs the caveat: Search query results will vary based on which instance is used because every instance queries the other search indexes separate (and thus its results are influenced on that instance's aggregate search history and index-access limitations). The major distinctions for SearXNG versus DDG or Brave: > The search UI is 'untracked' since no UI trackers are baked-in which would phone home or lay cookies into your browser (for DDG/Brave usage stats), > There is no 'crawler' that canvasses the Internet to discover fresh content (it leaves that to the major search indexes), > Queries multiple search indexes ("meta-search engine") based on the configurations and usage history of the server instance, > Privacy-friendly due to its ability to shield user tracking via standing up a non-local server instance connectable to major VPN providers: queries would all appear to come from general VPN/Proxy providers rather than your private instance (whether installed locally or on your own VPS in the cloud). PS: I've previously come across specialized search engines of this nature that indexes searches across media assets like YT, OF, etc. SearXNG seems to be a good backbone...if the rate-limiting/captcha/etc. issues were resolved.
    • For a guy who claims to hate Farage and the ignorant, gullible, rightwing racist skinheads sponsored by Putin that his lies represent, you sure are quoting them time and time and time again, mate. I guess you're conveniently ignoring the fact that your country and commonwealth just happened to work much better when it was still part of the E.U.? Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
    • Do you live in the U.K? Do any of the people here that are against the UK leaving the E.U, live in the U.K? If not then why are you bothered? If you do live here then it is a different thing . Brexit was a good idea, should have done it years before, it was done badly, but the idea was good. You are saying the same thing as remainers do, oh we did what Putin wanted, we listened to the lies and Farage. I hate Farage and never believed most of what he said, certainly did not believe the £350m a week for the NHS. But we did pay a lot of money to the E.U and yes some of it came back, but what is the point of paying it out for only some of it to come back? Get out of the E.U, no money to them and in theory we can use the money to do things in the country. I said in theory, but our governments are a total and complete waste of space. No matter what colour rosette they wear. You and others say it was a mistake and yet the two main parties in the U.K are not looking at rejoining the EU, I wonder why that is? I was not tricked by anyone. Makes no odds now, we are out and have been for 10 years, what we need is a decent government to run the country. All they do is shout at each other like a load of kids and seems to do nothing and make this country more into a police and nanny state. Getting more like China all the time.
