Nokia September 5th Event - Live Stream and Official Discussion

Recommended Posts

Thanks for letting me know :) I'm highly disappointed. I know they didn't state that they would announce all features at this event, but I'd really hoped they would. Right now, I'm set on getting an iPhone, but Microsoft can convince me otherwise if they include certain features I'd like (specifically some better Facebook integration) or impress me in other ways, but they really need to do that soon. I'm concerned that this "other event" might not even be until October :/ I wonder what their reasoning is for not announcing the new features yet. I can only hope it's because they're still working on awesome new additions ;)

It's getting on my nerves that Microsoft is being so vague about what Windows Phone 8 will offer. So far Nokia is pushing forward the most software innovations. I'm getting the feeling Windows Phone 8 itself might simply not be all that impressive compared to Windows Phone 7.5. Microsoft is endlessly blabbing on about those resizable Live Tiles the past few months as if they've got little else new to show us. At this point Nokia is adding more new substance to the platform than Microsoft themselves. If Windows Phone 8 is really this bland it could proof to be a problem for other manufactures.

Those are pretty much my thoughts, too. I'm concerned that Nokia have now announced their new Lumia range to the public, without any of the public being able to find out what operating system features are included on the devices. How are some people to know if they'd like a Lumia phone, if they don't know what features the operating system provides? On the contrary, come September 12 (a mere week's time), it's very likely that the public will know both hardware and operating system features of the new iPhone.

Maybe they want to talk about the OS after they talk abut the hardware? I mean this is more of a Nokia event than a MS one. Today is about the new Lumia hardware more than the OS itself. SteveB just said it himself, "today we see the hardware first".

I think we already know Calum; the most impressive Lumia software features will be coming from Nokia's own additions.

I think they're holding out on the big WP8 reveal until closer to the October release date. It's frustrating but it kind of makes sense if they want a clear slot to announce everything without a bg iPhone announcement and in the run-up to Christmas. This way they have a big announcement this week to draw attention away from Motorola, Amazon and Apple and another big announcement at the same time as actual phones are available.

I get that, but isn't the point of announcing a new phone in order to try to excite people and entice them to purchase that phone when it's released? How can that happen if people don't know what they'll be able to do using that phone?

That's a good point

I think we already know Calum; most features are coming from Nokia's own additions. Windows Phone 8 itself just won't be all that interesting. Maybe some integration with Windows Phone 8 as the biggest thing, but that's about it.

I think you need to be a bit more patient. We already know that lots of functionality is hidden in the builds of the OS that the OEMs have access to so there's obviously more waiting to be revealed. I also think that MS were stung last year when they announced Mango features too early and saw Google and Apple steal the best of them before the software was released to WP users. MS are obviously keeping their cards close to their chest to avoid a repeat of that and ensure that they have something unique to sell people for Xmas.

I think you need to be a bit more patient.

So far just about the only thing Microsoft is talking about is the Start screen. Doesn't that strike you as odd?

From The Verge:

Q&A session -

Q: "It all sounds exciting, when can I get one?"

A: "Not announcing specific pricing today... We are not announcing dates..."

:/

Weird. Really, really weird.

I will definitely be getting the 920 when it's released. The screen tech is fantastic (viewable outside AND works with gloves on :woot:), the wireless charging and accessories look great, the phone's beautiful and Nokia's software is amazing.

October can't come fast enough :)

No, as I explained in the rest of my post :)

    • Very fitting name since AI users have air where there brains should be.
    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
