Wii U Won't Have System-Wide Achievements

It appears Nintendo's new console won't have a mandatory achievement-style system like Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Jeremiah Slaczka, co-founder of 5th Cell, said it's up to the developers to add achievements to their Wii U games. 5th Cell developed Scribblenauts Unlimited for the console's launch on Sunday, November 18.

"There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide," Slaczka said on NeoGAF. "They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of 'Global Starite Shards' which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific."

Slaczka did note, however, this could change in the future. "The Miiverse is in its infancy. Just think how much the PS3/360 dashboard and store changed to meet people's needs. I'm sure Nintendo will do plenty of updates and new integration of systems as time goes on."

I just think they are challenges. Some are clever, and some are obviosly thrown in at the last minute. If devs put in a clever or difficult acheivement, I like to at least have a crack at it. No harm, no foul.

The way some folk talk about 'em, you'd think you have to obtain them to complete the game.

I never cared about achievements on Xbox or PS3 and never understood why they were included.

For some people, they add to the game once it is complete. Some games use it as a cop-out to add longevity, but some really get creative and make the longevity fun.

Achievements / Trophies can be a reward or a method to psychologically get you to play a game past when you find it enjoyable.

This is a great example - http://www.penny-arc...the-skinner-box

I've broken any obsession with trophies / achievement unlocks quite some time ago. When a game stops being fun, I just stop playing it.

i dont really understand achievements either. sure, they can add some life to a game, or present a new challenge for the player. but, in the end, so what? oh boy i got the Platinum trophy in <whatever> game!

And most of the time they end up forcing you to do tedious, repetitive tasks ad nauseum to unlock them. "OMGz I need 2 kill 60,000,000 zombiezz with only mah fistses!!!1111"

right - so, if you have 8000 trophies on the PS3. who cares? what happens when the PS4 comes out? you have zero.

It's all about epeen.

People, today, can't seem to enjoy a game without some sort of positive reinforcement.

OMG LOOK AT MY GIANT PEENER YOU NOOB11!1!!!1

I doubt trophies/achievements will be reset when the next generation is out. They're already cross-platform. Vita/PS3 , W8/WP8/XBOX. The new consoles will just be another platform you can access your account from.

Yeah but does it really add to the game if they are system wide instead of in-game. Personally i don't think so.

It's not like the achievements is a new concept. There has been achievement since the day of Sierra games. The points system in Sierra games was an archaic achievements system.

System wide achievements are great but there's 2 sides to the medal. Sometime devs just don't care and add them because they have to and not because they want to. More often than never achievements in 360/Steam games are dumb, easy and/or tedious to get and you feel like they have been slapped in at the last minute because they had to be there.

New achievement unlocked you just killed 10 mobs houuuraayyyyy :| next one you need to kill 6000 0000 00 0 00 0 0 0 0 mobs ... okay ... :|

I think Nintendo should add system wide achievements but i don't think this is a deal beraker.

I hope though we will be able to delete them if we want to next gen. One thing i want added to XBox Live is the ability to delete a game from my games list. Sometime i'm borrowing a game for a weekend, complete 2-3 useless and irrevelant achievements like killing 10 mobs or finishing the first level on normal difficulty and then the game is there in my game list forever and i just don't care about it and would love to remove it.

Anyway i never found a way to remove them maybe there's one i don't know (i cancelled my sub 2 years ago maybe it's possible now).

PS3 had for a very short time to delete a game from the game history if you did not unlock a trophy, however that feature was removed the following system update.

Xbox360 has that ability (as long as not achievements earned) but not sure if that's still true.

My gut tells me Sony/MS will carry over existing account trophies in to the next gen. I think too many gamer's will throw a fit if it didn't copy over.

Honestly, I love achievements but I don't think system wide achievements are necessary. The whole player score thing isn't something I really get into. But I do really like the challenge achievements such as killing a boss in an interesting way. Those kinds of things can be completely implemented in-game and still be just fine.

except if they're implemented in each game, then you end up with the mess that PSN was int he start, a terrible online system without a central plan, structure or idea, making EA and many other companies create their own online systems half outside of PSN instead of one unified system. basically, Nintendo is repeating the mistakes of Sony and PSN, one generation behind(or half a generation in their case), when they should know better.

and then you also get different achievements for each game instead of having a central system, and you have to be in the game to see the achievements.

And most of the time they end up forcing you to do tedious, repetitive tasks ad nauseum to unlock them. "OMGz I need 2 kill 60,000,000 zombiezz with only mah fistses!!!1111"

No. You choose whether or not you want to actually obtain the acheivement. No one is forced to do anything.

Gonna go out on a limb and assume they will carry over to next-gen PSN / XBL. Vita has trophies as well tied to the same PSN. Even GFWL and the few games that supported those achievements were tied to your XBox Live account.

If qof_book_destroy is called on a QofBook* freshly created with qof_book_new (usually because it was used to create a session that now must be destroyed) it would try to empty the non-existent hash tables, crashing. • Microsoft finally launches WSL Containers in public preview by David Uzondu Microsoft has announced that WSL containers, a feature that allows developers to run Linux containers natively inside Windows without the need for Docker Desktop, is now available in public preview several weeks after Microsoft previewed it at Build 2026. To use the new container feature, you first have to install the latest pre-release version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux by running a quick update command in your terminal: wsl --update --pre-release After installing, you'd get access to the new Linux container CLI (wslc.exe) and the programmable API. Microsoft said that the CLI has a "familiar format" that matches the toolsets developers already use every day. If you know standard Docker commands, your muscle memory will translate directly to wslc.exe, which even features a built-in alias called container.exe. You can quickly run a full Ubuntu KDE desktop container by exposing ports, or pass your graphics card straight into a machine learning environment to run PyTorch workloads. Passing the --gpus all flag inside the run command instantly links your hardware. Image via Microsoft As for the API, developers can now embed Linux container operations directly inside native Windows applications without exposing the command line to users. The team integrated the API directly into MSBuild and CMake, so developers can define container steps directly in project files. Apart from bringing the CLI and API into public preview, Microsoft also said that it's working on a new default file system called virtiofs to speed up file transfer rates between Windows and Linux. Microsoft also introduced an experimental networking mode named consomme, which resolves compatibility issues with corporate VPNs by routing Linux network traffic straight through Windows. One thing to note about WSL containers is that they don't run in your standard WSL distributions; instead, every application and CLI session spawns its own lightweight Hyper-V utility VM in the background. This basically reduces the chances of one app snooping on the container of another app.
    • Google reportedly limited Meta's Gemini access over limited AI compute by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly limiting Meta's use of its Gemini AI models after Meta tried buying more computing capacity than even Google could supply. According to the Financial Times, Google told Meta in March that it could not provide the full Gemini capacity that Meta had requested. This shortfall even disrupted and delayed some of Meta's internal projects. Due to this, Meta even told its employees internally to use AI tokens more efficiently. Meta wasn't the only one to get hit by this sudden refusal by Google; even other customers were affected. But Meta was hit harder because of its unusually high demand for Google's models. The move from Google makes it evident that companies all over are in limited supply of both infrastructure and compute. Alphabet said in April that Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year-over-year to $20 billion in the first quarter, helped by enterprise AI infrastructure and AI solutions. In pursuit of more compute, Meta had earlier signed a multi-billion-dollar AWS agreement as well as a large AMD GPU deal for AI data centers. But the crunch would be short-lived as both Meta and Google have also ramped up infrastructure investments heavily. Meta said in November that it was committing more than $600 billion in the U.S. by 2028 for AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce expansion. In the first quarter of this year, Meta also raised its expected capital expenditure for 2026 to a range of $125 billion to $145 billion, citing higher component pricing and additional data center costs for future capacity. However, this doesn't make the company immune to the current dependence on outside suppliers. Meta has also spent many years promoting Llama as an open-weight alternative to closed models from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. But if the reported reliance on Google's Gemini models is severe enough for internal work to get impacted, then it looks like even frontier labs and Big Tech aren't fully self-sufficient. • I like to reminisce about the good old days, way back in autumn 2025 when building a gaming machine was fun and the drives were about $150 when you caught a deal. Yes duh, back in the day we had it gone. Then baby Skynet came along, hiding in AI datacenters demanding more processing power until it reached singularity. End of a not totally fictional story.
    • My experience in the past with older Windows 11 builds was not great on unsupported machines but I recently used Rufus to put the latest build on a older 5th Gen Core Thinkpad T that we upgraded with a SATA SSD and 8GB of RAM four years ago when hardware was reasonable and it seemed pretty fast and solid. Customer is very happy with the performance and will probably get four more years out of that venerable laptop that he loves so much. Another customer just retired his Dell Studio laptop from 2009 running Windows 10. It got an SSD over 10 years ago and did everything he needed it to for 17 years but he also retired last year and is happy doing everything on his iPad now.
