Either way they dont need to do this. This is the very definition of playing God.

If there are advantages it can provide, you can turn the argument into needing that advantage. Progress has no ceiling meaning you won't see humanity decide "we're too advanced, let's stop". Unless something like religion takes over. Humans have been playing god ever since they existed and it's only going to continue that trend and at a faster rate thanks to the aide of past technological achievements.
