On verge of selling S3 - too much data being used. Help

Recommended Posts

With Android, apps still run in the background even when you come out of them, so chances are the ebay app hadn't been opened for quite a while and had a bit of updating content to do, and ebay is lots of images

Maybe install a task killer if background apps are eating data, I like "Advanced Task Manager"

So she ran it today as she was at work. Not a true reflection though as she had to come home at dinner time ill.

She used Facebook through the stock browser & not Opera Mini today.

With eBay - she opened that by mistake. That's all she did though - hit the icon. She didn't search or go through anything within eBay & it used 1MB. Quite a bit for just opening i'd have thought.

For comparison, i was on mine (iPhone 4S) in the doctors waiting room for about 30 minutes:

EDIT: She doesn't know what this News Daemon is though.

Is that app for iphone? what app is that?

What provider are you with, i have not read all the thread so apoligies if already mentioned

the reason i ask is i am with tmobile i have 1.5gb data but that is ONLY doanload

Gerneral browsing and facebook etc does not count towards this

in saying that since 1st december i have used 25mb on facebook and i am on it every days

Hi technique, from what i can tell your daughter is on o2 pay and go in the uk and you are struggling with the cap they give though you do have some options which ofc are to pay o2 more money unfortunately for a data top up! (?3 = 100mb, ?6 = 500mb, ?10 = 1gb)

Personally though i would just change companies. I moved to Giffgaff and they have unlimited data as long as you dont abuse it and use it for tethering your laptop too and i dont normally use these links but i could use the extra credit :p lol

http://giffgaff.com/orders/affiliate/sidley83

Im guessing this is your current plan (o2):

?10-15: Get unlimited texts, plus 500MB of web and Wi-Fi

Giffgaff:

?10: For only ?10 get 250 UK minutes, unlimited UK texts and 1 GB Internet for one month. Plus, you will still benefit from our free giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts on top of that.

?12: For only ?12 get 250 UK minutes, unlimited UK texts and unlimited mobile Internet for one month. Plus, you will still benefit from our free giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts on top of that.

?15: For only ?15 get 400 UK minutes, unlimited UK texts and unlimited mobile Internet for one month. Plus you will still benefit from our free giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts on top of that.

Goodybags differ from credit just so you know, you buy ?10 credit then the goodybag, you top up credit when needed and rebuy the bag everymonth for the benefits which imo are better than o2. They also use the o2 network so the phone will be fine (you may get a rep that says different though, ignore them they are morons and just trying to keep you as a customer).

Att Mods: I dont normally post ref links, but like i said im sort on credit and understand if it gets removed :(

I apologise if this has been mentioned already but have you tried setting a data limit, the GS3 has ICS, JB if you have the update on it which gives you the ability to set data limits through the Data Usage Settings.

And as mentioned before - she wont root the phone. If it was mine, i would root it, but it's not mine & she wont root.

That GiffGaff offer sounds very good. SOUNDS being the keyword. I'm sceptical though as if it sounds good it usually isn't.

It's the exact same as what i get now, except more texts (wont use them) & more data (wont use it, but just in case i do, it's handy). I get minutes though which would be a bonus.

I just wonder if the GiffGaff setup would use up data much faster so that 1GB with GiffGaff may be like 250mb with o2???

Also i believe they operate on the o2 network, but i wonder how accurate that is - would i get EXACTLY the same reception on BOTH 2G -AND- 3G with GiffGaff as i do with o2? If so then it's a winner, but if not...

Data is data, i dont see how they can manipulate it so that your using a larger portion myself plus im sure some savvy user would notice this if they did somehow manipulate it.

I know my friends use them and upload images and stuff from there mobiles to facebook and instagram never heard them complain if im honest. As for the coverage i can check later today as im travelling and will be in the sticks (country) there is limited coverage where i am but im pretty sure i had a signal in the same places i use to (brothers bedroom and across the road in the pub/home was always sketchy!)

Edit:

Will post tomorrow on the service where i am like i said limited coverage in the area i am plus after travelling i wount feel like using a computer

Oh and yes forgot to say GiffGaff is a community driven support, so check out the forums if you have any questions: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Forum/ct-p/Forum believe thats right link. They are normally pretty quick on the answers :)

Lol any phone in its class will have a screen of similar or greater spec as pretty much every phone has a 720p screen.

Unless you go for cheap low end handsets..

I'd recommend she uses opera mini to browse and contact the operator to use their image compressing proxy services (they often implement a server that compresses images more to reduce data usage at the expense of image quality) so you can benefit from the savings on other apps

+1

Give a try with Opera mini browser in turbo mode which compresses the browsing data.

And as mentioned before - she wont root the phone. If it was mine, i would root it, but it's not mine & she wont root.

sounds like GiffGaff is the UK version of StraightTalk which uses the AT&T networks here in the States, if that's the case then yes, the signal should be exactly the same

clown phone from Apple.

I don't want to get into Android vs iPhone debates as quite frankly, they bored me at the start & they bore me now

but define a "clown phone", considering that the iPhone & the Galaxy S3 are arguable 2 of the most top end phones you can buy.

500mb should be enough when you are covered by wifi most of the time (at work and at home). Facebook loads pictures as you scroll. You can also scroll them horizontally so it downloads even those you don't see. I believe that's why it uses so much data while you use it (with background sync disabled).

    • Stop asking people that. It's a "No True Scotsman" argument in that you are attempting to discredit the opinions of a person by Attacking the Messenger. The reason that these are logical fallacies is the TRUTH is based on facts as supported by evidence. Nothing else. So, always debate the facts with evidence to reach the truth. Once you learn to do this, you'll be able to recognize when people are fearmongering and lying to you for their own selfish ends.
    • It doesn't matter if you didn't directly hear it from person X or Y. Every one of your statements comes straight from the racist, skinhead, anti-immigrant, be afraid of everything, "they are all taking our jobs", etc. etc. mouthpieces. That's where Farag and Putin heard it from too...and used it against the UK. So, while you keep disavowing the people who publicly peddled that position, you keep proving over and over again that those lies influenced you into being tricked when the Brexit vote came around too. In fact, your final sentence makes it crystal clear that it was the racist/anti-immigrant lies you fell and voted for, since you stated that you didn't have an issue with the economic trade issues with the EU. Ahem. To be clear, all of these LIES are EONS old, mate. They are the same fearmongering lies peddled to the same ignorant, gullible cowards by the same charlatans, snake-oil salesmen, and would be demagogues who've been doing this since caveman Ugh lied about his slightly different neighbor in order to steal his land. And, finally, you answered your own previous question. The reason that the EU isn't clamoring to bring the UK back is that they have had enough of people who would rather shoot themselves in the foot than get over their "insecurity issues". It's the same reason the entire world is moving away from the USA as fast as it can...
    • Onkyo Dolby Atmos AV receivers are really solid deals by Sayan Sen Recently we covered great deals on several soundbar models from the likes of Sony, JBL, Samsung and others for really good prices (the lowest in several months). Aside from that we also reported on the Edifier S3000MKII, a hi-fi two-way bookshelf monitor that's available for only $800. Today we bring a list of AV receivers from Onkyo that are available at great prices including the Onkyo NR7100, RZ30, and 8470 (purchase links under the specs table down below). The Onkyo TX-NR7100 and Onkyo TX-RZ30 are both 9.2-channel AV receivers designed for immersive home theater setups but they occupy slightly different tiers within Onkyo’s lineup with the RZ30 positioned as the more advanced model. The TX-NR7100 is a THX Certified 9.2-channel receiver offering up to 100 W per channel (8 ohms, 2 channels driven). It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced formats, with flexible configurations such as 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 speaker layouts. A key highlight is its built-in Dirac Live Room Correction which should help optimize sound based on your room and its acoustics. In comparison, both models share several core capabilities though the RZ30 is geared toward enthusiasts seeking more precise calibration and system flexibility, while the NR7100 is positioned as a slightly more accessible, value-focused option with strong all-round performance.
