they usually use mince meat(beef, pork) but i felt like slicing up a flank and using that instead.

hmm its just tofu. I just did a quick search, they all call for tofu. no substitutes.

edit: don't have to use fermented anything. but tofu is a must. so no fermented black bean or fermented bean curd if not desired.

ah ok, i thought i read somewhere that it was using fermented beans. i like tofu just fine.

edit - just found this recipe which calls for it: "1 tsp Chinese salted black beans (fermented black beans, also called Chinese black beans), or to taste"

Neowin.net ~ where good food tastes bad lol

Cooking isn't really "Tech" related is it ? But would be interesting to see what other nationalities around the interwebz , whizz up in the kitchen :D.I may even post my infamous "White Widow" cup cakes recipe.

A cooking section would be fun and I'd love it, but it's not very interesting on an international scale.

Aside simple things many recipes by foreign cooks are impossible to make since you can't find the right ingredients. I live in Belgium, and even though our stores are pretty good when I look up a Nigella.com (UK) recipe there's often a lot in it that I can't find. I'm sure that many of the things I make contain things you can't buy in the US or UK either.

But it'd be nice and I'd love a cooking section, even if only to share pics of what I cook :D

One of my specialities: penne + completely fresh tomato sauce with meatballs and bacon and a layer of mozzarella slightly roasted in the oven. Family favourite :D

But the site already has tons of traffic, it's not like it would be starting a new site just for cooking. People aren't going to go "oh the cooking sub forum is looking empty, I'm not going to come back to Neowin". IMHO the best way to see if it would work is create the forum, give it a 30 day trial and see where it is in 30 days.

You my friend are a very clever person :p

I'd consider contributing some of my non-secret creations. (Y)

However I wouldn't drown my efforts of good layout, a nice recipe, international measures, photos and all that in a cooking pot of miscellaneousness. :sleep2:

Am I the only one anymore that thinks a tech site should be well.... umm..... tech...

we've turned from a tech site into an anything goes site as of late on the forum end... I see more political debates then tech debates.... if we had reviews of new food gadgets, then yeah sure go for it!

If it wasn't for the breadth of this forum I wouldn't bother coming here that often, because quite frankly I can only take a certain amount of tech talk a day and the additional topics just make it easy to stay on this site and not come and go all the time.

It's like a living room to me.

So no, I don't think we should limit our topics and should cherish anything that's popular.

Neowin is more than a tech forum quite obviously and the suggestion it should be just that always annoys me a little, because the variety of what can be found on here sets it apart from the rest, although there are some other forums that follow a similar strategy.

Neowin is NOT the place to go if you want tech-only talk and are annoyed by the existence of stuff on the side of your browsing.

not saying we shouldn't have other topics, it's just gotten so much away from tech anymore...

^ This for the win :D

meh

take it all or let go altogether

Don't half-ass appreciation for breadth.

If tech talk loses to other topics, that may have other reasons, because my wish to talk about certain things isn't distracted by my general conversing needs.

It might look like tech talk is losing by percentage, but certainly not by total amount I bet.

Yes, it has. I guess we need to decide what we are. If we are a tech forum then we need to focus on that. If we are a general forum then we need to focus on that.

The tech sections are alive and well, the general sections are alive and well. Nothing needs to be decided, forums are what they are. We focus on what we want to focus on, and everyone wins. This is one of the best "general tech" forums I've ever been on so I'm happy the way we are.

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
