The last paragraph is perfect...

In total, 20 of the current 22 drivers have elected not to compete in the final two races. As a result, the only entries in this weekend?s US GP will be Sebastian Vettel, who will win as usual, and Marussia?s Max Chilton, who will somehow finish 19th.

Lotus agrees deal with Heikki Kovalainen to replace Kimi Raikkonen

Heikki Kovalainen will be announced as Kimi Raikkonen's replacement at Lotus on Thursday once final details of his contract with the team have been sorted out.

Following intense discussions that have involved both the Lotus and Caterham teams over the past few hours, AUTOSPORT understands that an agreement has been reached for him to stand in for the final two Formula 1 races of the season.

One of the main hurdles was securing the blessing of Caterham for the deal, because Kovalainen is under contract to the outfit until the end of the season.

But despite a history of friction between Caterham and Lotus dating back to the Team Lotus naming dispute, sources suggest that an amicable deal has been reached for Kovalainen to be released to race for Lotus in the United States and Brazil.

Kovalainen has already visited Lotus' Enstone headquarters to finalise his preparations for a return to racing action for the first time since 2012.

Lotus is expected to make an announcement confirming Kovalainen's deal on Thursday morning, just hours before he is due to arrive at the Austin track.

Kovalainen's deal comes after efforts to sign Nico Hulkenberg came to nothing when the German decided against joining the team, despite having visited Enstone earlier this week.

Schumacher approached

It has also emerged that Lotus sounded out Michael Schumacher about a possible comeback after his retirement last year.

Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm told German newspaper Bild: "There have been quite a few requests in the past.

"Michael would still be fit enough but he has a new life. I don't find it unusual that people ask.

"Many people changed their assessment about Michael because of Nico Rosberg's recent performances compared to those of Lewis Hamilton.

"Michael drove as well as Nico, just as Nico is driving as well as Lewis."

Bit of a shame MSC didn't accept the offer.

I think Lotus want an experienced driver in. Instead of using their third driver because they still need to haul points in. Even if Heikki doesn't fight for race wins or podiums, he is quite capable of hauling good points in and beating the Ferrari's.

Happy Birthday!

*Button penalised three spots for overtaking during reg flags in FP1.

**Gutierrez penalised ten spots for blocking Maldonado during Q1.

***Pic penalised five spots for a gearbox change.

Did you hear the pre-qualis interview with Maldonado...what a stuck up prick!! Then after qualis...this!! I know he comes with financial backing, but I truly hope he doesn't get a drive in 2014.

I wouldn't say tampering, I'd say Williams are giving Bottas the Perfect Seb treatment now that Maldonado's officially buggering off at the end of the season; hopefully from F1 altogether, and for good.

Maldonado won't be out of F1 after this season. If not at Lotus he'll get a seat at Sauber or FI thanks to the PDVSA backing. Sad but that's how the F1 driver market works in 2013.

Well done to Mr Bottas, some much needed ponts there for old father Williams, lets hope they can be a tad better next year when Crashtor takes his money to Lotus!

Apart from that it was a pretty boring race......and not just because Vettel won at a canter, again it`s tyres, tyres, tyres....

    • I think the car analogy is more this: Left hand drive, basic commands on the left side of the infotainment screen. Right hand drive, basic commands on the right side of the infotainment screen. Granted, you're not swapping between the two often so it's doesn't really work. But it's to do with the proximity of you (your mouse, or the driver) to the controls.
    • I mean, the old one was broken and so stupidly complex for many users, so I don't see that as a feasible option. A context menu needs to be simple to use, and for me the Windows 11 style actually worked really well for me, and many others. I used to have to scroll the damn context menu just to get to "file properties" in Windows 10. That was not a good experience, and I'm sure you'd agree. What they're trying to do is make it the best of both worlds, as clearly you'd prefer the Win10 style. I'm curious how they're going to do this.
    • The "Show more options" has its place, as does the simpler context menu, but it should perhaps be a separate fly-out rather than relaunching the entire, old context menu. The old context menu was getting absurd in Windows 10. Often I'd have to make the context menu scroll just to get to "File properties" on my old laptop. Even without much installed, the amount of items was just too much. It's a context menu, not a "do all" menu. Making it configurable is fraught with challenges too, so I'm interested to see how Microsoft tackles this one.
    • I don't hate the new menus, I am not a fan of the lack of features and how they went live when they clearly are not complete. The menu itself presents much better than the previous - but what's lacking (IMO) is: 1) Any kind of automated manipulation such as: "this goes on the new menu because you use this feature more often on this filetype" "this is rarely used and will fall back to the old menu" 2) Any kind of user manipulation such as: "a UI to add/remove/order items to the new menu"
