Florida clerk's gun beats thief's cattle prod

TALLAHASSEE, FL (AP) ? Authorities say a Florida Panhandle man has been arrested after he tried to rob a convenience store with a cattle prod but was thwarted by a clerk with a gun.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office says 26-year-old Lance Tomberlin went into a store just outside Tallahassee on January 2, produced the cattle prod and demanded money from the clerk. Officials say he shocked the clerk several times before the clerk pulled a handgun.

Authorities say Tomberlin fled and another employee tried to restrain him, but he eventually escaped in his truck. Deputies stopped Tomberlin's truck but he fled on foot.

The sheriff's office says Tomberlin was arrested Tuesday and charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery.

I agree with that part.

The employee who restrained him before he "eventually" escaped (implying he was held for a while) probably had more to do with the guys arrest than the gun though.

It's called the Tueller Drill (after the Utah cop who developed it) and is used to establish the radius within which a person with a knife has the tactical advantage. Highly variable based on an individuals reaction time, holster & weapon type etc. but generally between 15 and 25 feet. The idea is to learn that distance for you and react before that perimeter is breached. Mine is 16 feet.

Cattle prods are weak. They shock but they don't really hurt or wound, that's why they are used with cattle. It's a high voltage but low current charge.

Never used a cattle prod but ran head first into an electric fence once. It ate me up. :D
