Kim Dotcom's new Mega storage service is live

Recommended Posts

After 15 mins my reg still hasn't gone through............ Just went through. :p

Edit:

Now it tells me that my pass is wrong. Then I get Oops! Something went wrong!

Edit2:

No issues now. But I'm confused about this:

To strengthen the key, we have collected entropy from your mouse movements and keystroke timings.

Can someone explain what this means please? Thanx.

Well I cancelled the 5 file upload and tried just to upload 1 489kb pdf file - Its just been sitting there for the last 15 minutes with a status of 'pending'

Well if this is a sign of things to come, I'm not impressed - I've been trying to upload a 489kb pdf file as a test for the last 25 minutes and its still showing the upload status as pending :crazy:

Well I can't even go to the main site it seems unless this thing has some ****ty requirement to use chrome or something.

or it could be this:

Wow. I have never seen anything like this. From 0 to 10 Gigabit bandwidth utilization within 10 minutes.

Same here, tried for a few hours before it recognised my user/pass then try and upload a test file of 150bytes and it's sat there for over half an hour.

I registered for free, but I still want my money back :(

I finally got logged in and this is what I get:

Warning: You are using an outdated browser, which adversely affects your file transfer performance. Please upgrade to Google Chrome.

I use Firefox ONLY.

They list the reasons for this on the Mega Blog

Something is fishy here

See, all of your files are encrypted locally before they're uploaded, so Mega has no idea what anything is.
That is from Gizmodo's review.

However, they have an option of

Skip identical files when uploading:
which would lead you to think there is some type of deduplication going on, and the same is mentioned in there terms
8. Our service may automatically delete a piece of data you upload or give someone else access to where it determines that that data is an exact duplicate of original data already on our service. In that case, you will access that original data.

So if all of your data encrypted prior to leaving your system, then deduplication isn't possible, since the hashes will all be different and impossible for Mega to match since as it says above, has no idea what anything is. Plus, how is my data "encrypted locally" I'm not running any type of client that is creating the encryption and tying it to my private key, and I know Chrome isn't doing it. On top of that, how is sharing working with other users, how does mega share it with a link i give them, if it's encrypted and they don't have the private key.

I'm calling shenanigans

People should quit complaining about how slow it is, we get it, its slow!

It's getting absolutely hammered right now, give it a day or so then try it out.

They wont have capacity for this many users at once, apart from the first while after launch, there will never be this many, so its not worth the infrastructure costs.

I'd like to know about the points raised above, very good thinking there xendrom. How can it be encrypted locally? It sure sounds like it from their FAQ pages.

All encryption is end-to-end. Data uploaded is encrypted on the uploading device before it is sent out to the Internet, and data downloaded is decrypted only after it has arrived on the downloading device.

https://mega.co.nz/#help_security

All files stored on MEGA are encrypted. All data transfers from and to MEGA are encrypted. And while most cloud storage providers can and do claim the same, MEGA is different ? unlike the industry norm where the cloud storage provider holds the decryption key, with MEGA, you control the encryption, you hold the keys, and you decide who you grant or deny access to your files, without requiring any risky software installs. It?s all happening in your web browser!"

https://mega.co.nz/#privacycompany

Also found this on how can they know if something is a duplicate if everything is encrypted locally and they dont know the keys?

Because the server can't see filenames, filename collisions have to be dealt with on the client side. With standard settings, if you upload a file that you already seem to have in your account (same target path/filename, same size, same last modification time), it is skipped, but nothing prevents you from keeping multiple files or folders with the same name in the same folder.

Lastly, this is a little scary from their t&c page.

5. If you allow others to access your data (e.g. by, amongst other things, giving them a link to, and a key to decrypt, that data), in addition to them accepting these terms, you are responsible for their actions and omissions while they are using the website and services and you agree to fully indemnify us for any claim, loss, damage, fine, costs (including our legal fees) and other liability if they breach any of these terms.

Be careful who you give keys to and to what you give them keys for. I guess if they pass it on, you, the uploader are going to be held accountable

Info about non-chrome browsers not working with MEGA here: https://mega.co.nz/#blog_1

Mozilla CEO said this about MEGA not working with firefox:

The "Filesystem API" (http://www.w3.org/TR/file-system-api/) is *not* part of "HTML5" and not near w3 REC status. See http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webapps/2012OctDec/0491.html

If this is going to be chrome only for now then I'll pass. Maybe when they add the support for the other browsers officially or whatever and it becomes more stable then I'll give it a try.

I especially like this section, they are all like "Stick it to the Man" then they try to cover their ass in this part

What you can't do

17. You can't:

17.1 assign or transfer any rights you have under these terms to any other person without getting our written agreement;

17.2 do anything that would damage, disrupt or place an unreasonable burden on our website or service or anyone else's use of our website or a service including but not limited to denial of service attacks or similar;

17.3 infringe anyone else's intellectual property (including but not limited to copyright) or other rights in any material.

17.4 resell or otherwise supply our services to anyone else without our prior written consent;

17.5 use our website or a service, including, without limitation, any communication tools available through the website, or any forum, chat room or message centre that we provide:

17.5.1 to store, use, download, upload or otherwise transmit, data in violation of any law (including to breach copyright or other intellectual property held by us or anyone else);

I like this also

40. DESPITE THE ABOVE, IF ANY COURT HOLDS US (THIS INCLUDES OUR OFFICERS, STAFF AND AGENTS) LIABLE FOR ANY MATTER RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR OUR SERVICES, OUR TOTAL COMBINED LIABILITY WILL BE LIMITED TO THE SUM OF YOUR MONTHLY FEES PAID BY YOU FOR THE PREVIOUS MONTH.

Hate to break it to them, if the "Courts" hold them liable, then the total combined liability won't be limited to anything of your monthly fees, it will be limited to whatever the "Courts" deem them liable for, and fees/fines will be determined by the "Courts" not Mega... lol

And like i said earlier

43. We reserve the right to disclose data and other information as required by law.

When the going get's tough, Kimble will just sell out everyone's IPs and account info to whatever authority to cover himself and get a plea deal, he's done this 2-3 times in the past.

Just check the privacy policy

and how long have you used chrome????

and how long have you used chrome????

Why does it matter? If he doesn't want to use chrome then he won't use chrome.

As for other browsers, I signed up and used it just fine in Win8 with IE10.

and how long have you used chrome????

I've used it on and off since the start even used the less Google spyware loaded spinoff iron. I never liked it and it's not my main browser. Besides that I don't feel the need to install and use something I don't like in order to try a service out of simple curiosity. So as I said if or when mega expands it's support to the other browsers and is more stable I'll give it a try, maybe.

    • I used a Pixel 10 Pro XL when it first came out for about 8 months. When I first got it, it was using Google assistant and that was fast, when asking it to call somone etc. Then it automatically switched with some update to Gemini. Doing even the simplist of things like asking it to call someone in my contacts was soooooo slow compared to Google assistant. I guess it had to go out to the cloud to do that? Back on iPhone and while Siri is dumb right now, it does do those simple things, like call someone, set a timer, star the stop watch etc, really fast. That an while I like Google Material Design 3 over iOS 26, they Pixel 10 Pro XL was so slow in comparison to the iPhone 17 Pro I am using.
