Red Hat CEO says you should buy Windows

Recommended Posts

Matthew Szulik, chief executive of Linux vendor Red Hat, said on Monday that although Linux is capable of exceeding expectations for corporate users, home users should stick with Windows: "I would say that for the consumer market place, Windows probably continues to be the right product line," he said. "I would argue that from the device-driver standpoint and perhaps some of the other traditional functionality, for that classic consumer purchaser, it is my view that [Linux]technology needs to mature a little bit more."

Well, I think that's exactly right. Linux is as easy to use as Windows, so long as it supports your hardware! I'd be perfectly happy using Redhat is I could just get my sound card to work. But with out it, it defeats many of the reasons I use my computer.

You can't blame linux for the lack of driver and hardware support.. that is the hardware manufacturers fault. Same thing with game makers. They could easily make ports of linux and Mac but they see Microsoft as the sole money making operating system for their products.

 Couldn't have said it better myself. I wonder how the HardCore Linux advocates feel now? :D

Well I personally don't mind.

Linux has never been suitable for the average home user - I would personally have never reccomended it for such a scenario!

But for the enthusiast home user (such as a lot of Neowinians, etc) and people with a bit more IQ about them than the people who put credit cards in floppy drives and use their CDROM drives as a coffee cup holder, then Linux is still a great system.

We all know still that Linux makes an excellent server system though.. Windows for desktops, Linux for servers :)

Linux has never appealed to me due to the lack of a gaming platform. Sure you can host a CS server on a linux build, but you can't play the clientside version. Bummer.

Actually, you can. There is a program called "WINE" that allows you to run Win32 based applications in a *nix environment.

As for the Windows for desktop, Linux for server, I personally prefer a BSD flavor for servers. =) :ninja:

What the hell? Linux CEO has been conquered by those evil MS ***tards. May he be sent to Valhalla to serve under ODin for the rest of his life.

that is what i wanted to write and look for the meaning of Valhalla in Google. these two were something i didnt expect:

;)

valhalla is now shipping for linux

valhalla is a great hall where "odin receives the souls of heroes fallen bravely in battle".

more is here @ Valhalla

Hardly surprising... Linux is getting better, but it's still too difficult to use for the average Joe. Just installing a driver for your gfx card is a science in itself.

I know what you mean. Those darn Nvidia drivers had me going crazy for a little bit. Got it working though.. :D

linux is a great system and is gonna get so much better, its gone so far in recent years! much further then windows (in my opinion please dont argue with me about this) sad to see redhat linux is dying also, but to be honest never liked it anyway! go the slackware or gentoo :)

still have to admit windows is made so much easier.. mainly because of what is almost a monopoly there is. if more people used max it would be cheaper, if more people used linux over the years it would be better.

Huh? I got this on Googlism:

valhalla is awaiting you

valhalla is included in the plans for a future nordic youth portal

valhalla is the only choice

valhalla is awesome

valhalla is a spooky place

valhalla is dead

valhalla is a good ride

To the guy who said linux has come a long way in the past few years..... errr so has windows, they just did it first. Linux is trying FAR too hard to be like windows, its almost embarasing that linux freaks claim its far better then advocate complete ripping of the GUI.

Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love linux as a no-gui server OS, but as a desktop its a wannabe, plain and simple.

Snickering I just love how windows people think microsoft like invented the gui, with the blue desktop and the nice little icons and taskbar. They dont hold the patient on any of the destops, taskbars or icons so when another company makes a o/s with them everyone says oh oh look they are stealing microsofts stuff. bull besides go back to the 70s when mr gates stole basic. when you run your mouth at least do your research to back it up .

So what kind of GUI does Linux have? Never seen one :o

So what kind of GUI does Linux have? Never seen one :o

You know that's the funniest thing I've heard all day! I love Gnome... not really a fan of KDE but might give it a shot if I ever install Linux again (either Fedora, Slackware or Gentoo).

The fact with windows a noob can install pretty much all software by just putting in their cd and following the instructions or if they downloaded it by just double clicking the .exe file and following the very easy instructions. Until Linux gets a standard system with a program having say .lin where every version can use this instead of having .rpm or god knows how many sources missing messages that people don't even know how or where to get and/or add them. Poeple don't want to have to use a command line to inzip, untar and install and such. The mac and windows make it simple with either .exe for windows or .bin, .dmg or the like that still only require a couple clicks of their mouse without a command line. Hey I like Linux but that is its biggest killer and until that becomes universal and easy it will "NEVER EVER" compete with windows or the mac platform.

For those busy cussing out the CEO of Red Hat, Inc...

He has a valid and clear point, Linux isnt ready for desktop usage. The OS has a long ways to go in terms of being simple to use, many users love the ability to know how to say install Nvidia drivers on Linux w/ ease, but for a average user taking 30 minutes to do a "simple" task isnt very welcomed. Simplcity that Windows and Mac are famous for can be inherent to limits, but its also needed. The majority of Linux users are like me, PC Professionals, Taking a while to learn sometime and master it is actually fun to us. To A person who could care less about a PC and just wants specific stuff done its not fun at all, but instead a pain in the arse.

I agree with the CEO on Linux, it wil get in user hands soon enough, not now. And for the users screaming that Linux dosent "Steal" from MS, it does lots, but MS is a standard so its hard not to have to steal from them...

Relax and as said before...

Windows = Desktops

Windows Server = Damn good server OS :D (im a windows server admin soo...)

Linux = Server

    • SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 hands on by Steven Parker I was offered the chance to test out the SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500, and full disclosure, they let me keep it regardless of my findings. Anyway, I jumped at the chance due to my long hours sitting at my desk, mousing around. Apologies for the knife cut across the top of the box; that was my doing, being a bit too heavy-handed with opening up the outer packaging. First up, what's in the box: SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 1x Type-C charging cable User Manual 1-Year Warranty (card) In short, everything you need to get started. According to the official Amazon listing, here are the key features: Full-Hand Air Compression: OS500 wraps your fingers, palm, and wrist with multi-chamber air compression for a complete hand relaxation experience. The extended massage chamber helps cover more of the hand and wrist area than standard palm-only hand massagers Palm Kneading with 6 Modes & 6 Intensities: Built-in palm kneading rollers add a hands-on massage feel, while 6 preset modes and 6 pressure levels let you choose the comfort level that fits your day—from gentle relaxation to a firmer full-hand massage 3 Heat Levels with Cooling Fan: Choose from 104°F, 113°F or 122°F warmth to suit different seasons and comfort preferences. The built-in cooling fan helps reduce stuffiness during heated sessions, keeping your hand feeling fresh and comfortable Easy Visual Display & Smart Timer: The digital image display clearly shows massage area, mode, intensity, heat level, and remaining time at a glance. Select 10, 15, or 20-minute sessions for quick office breaks, evening relaxation, or everyday hand care Rechargeable, Cordless & Comfortable: A 3000mAh battery supports over 90 minutes of full-function use on a full charge, with convenient USB-C charging. The soft inner lining, smooth ABS/PU finish, and premium black-gold design make OS500 ideal for home, office, or gifting With all that out of the way, here are my own findings. I gave it a try on both left and right hands, and as you can maybe see from the above YouTube Short, (sorry for the shaky video), my whole hand fits in, but my wrist barely enters the Hand Massager. I was able to push through a bit more with my fingertips extending out the other end to get a bit of massaging on the start of my wrist. Usage For some reason, there is a strap that is very difficult to fasten to my wrist with one hand. I am not sure what function it has, and it isn't mentioned in the user manual. The only thing I could find was in the product images that claimed "wrist precision". Unlike the Bob and Brad Hand Massager, this device does not massage the wrist anyway, even though a "wrist mode" is mentioned, which must be for smaller hands than I have, as it is mainly intended for the hand and fingers. In addition, for its steeper price, there are no disposable gloves provided in the box, which is a bit of an issue considering the internal cover (which appears to be elasticated nylon) cannot be removed for washing; so you are left with only one choice: always thoroughly wash your hands before using it. I can imagine this thing getting a bit grimy after a period of use, and that is a bit of a shame. With that said, the buttons on the device, from left to right, do the following: Heat button: 3-level heat control at 104°F, 113°F, or 122°F Mode button: Auto mode Circular mode Soothing mode Relax mode Palm and fingers mode Palm and wrist mode Intensity button: from (First-time users) 15Ka, 25Ka, 35Ka, 45Ka, 55Ka, 60Ka (Intensive relief) Knead button: on or off (6 pressure levels) Power button: Long-press to turn on or off Cooling button: turn on or off the cooling fan Also, in the product imagery, it states there are 36 "custom modes," but nowhere is it listed what these modes are. I can only imagine that they mean a combination of all of the above settings in different intensity levels. The device itself seems to rely on a single "kneading" mechanism located at the palm area of the hand, which spins when in use, and the other massage features are mainly utilized through the air sacs, increasing and decreasing at various levels on the hand and fingers. I am not sure it offered too much relief for someone who is typing and operating a mouse for hours at a time; further testing may be required. It does feel nice, though. Finally, you may be wondering how this fits into the scope of a tech website? Well, let me tell you something: sometimes I sit for up to 15 hours working on Neowin, and although I take breaks in between, it takes a toll on my body. I think in the immediate absence of a partner to apply relief, a good massager like this Hand Massager can shed the strains of the day in just a couple of 15-minute bursts. On the official website, this has an MSRP of $99.99, but luckily for our readers, it is selling at $10 off for just $89.99 right now on Amazon. SKG Hand Massager with Heat OS500 for $89.99 (with $10 off coupon), $99.99 MSRP For me, this gets a thumbs hands(?) down. However, it could be improved by making it so that the protective covering could be removed and thrown into the washing machine, or get yourself some disposable gloves to use with it.
