Cops Nab 5-Year-Old for Wearing Wrong Color Shoes to School

Recommended Posts

In Mississippi, if kindergarteners violate the dress code or act out in class, they may end up in the back of a police car.

A story about one five-year-old particularly stands out. The little boy was required to wear black shoes to school. Because he didn?t have black shoes, his mom used a marker to cover up his white and red sneakers. A bit of red and white were still noticeable, so the child was taken home by the cops.

The child was escorted out of school so he and his mother would be taught a lesson.

Ridiculous? Perhaps. But incidents such as this are happening across Mississippi. A new report, ?Handcuffs on Success: The Extreme School Discipline Crisis in Mississippi Public Schools,? exposes just how bad it?s become.

Released on January 17, the report is a joint project between state chapters of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Mississippi Coalition for the Prevention of Schoolhouse to Jailhouse and the Advancement Project.

The report examined more than 100 school districts and claimed that black students are affected by harsh disciplinary actions at a much greater rate than their white peers. It notes that ?for every one white student who is given an out-of-school suspension, three black students are suspended, even though black students comprise just half of the student population.?

Carlos McCray, an associate professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Education in the Education Leadership Administration Program, says, ?Research has shown that students who are subjected to multiple suspensions and expulsions are more likely to drop out of school. And we all know where this leads.?

If you think about it, the kid is getting sent home for violation of school dress code. The kid is 5 years old. Who better to make sure he/she gets there safely than cops?

Not sure why they just didn't call in the parents to pick them up however...

Wow. Just wow.

I know nothing of their situation, so I am going out on a limb, but it sounds to me that the mother did not have the financial means, so she tried her best by trying to cover the sneakers with a black magic marker.

5 years old or not, I am sure the kid was already terribly ashamed from this fact, so to make such a big deal out of it, is truly offensive in my opinion.

The victim in all of this?

The poor kid. He will remember this for quite some time. He will carry the shame. All because he did not have black shoes?

That is truly a shame.

The human way to handle this would have been to call the mother, have her come pick him up. Or better yet, let him hang out in the principles office until school ended or something along those lines. Then tell the mother.

To downright embarrass him for nothing he did, that is despicable.

I am going to admit I did not read the source but from what I read I don't think the problem is with the kid or mother who may not be able to afford a new pair of shoes. I think it is a problem with the school and police. The people at the school need to know how to handle the situation better. It seems as if they wanted to force the mother to do what they want but can't get her to comply so they call the police. The police are stupid enough to do as the school asked. At the end the kid is the one who is getting mistreated due to the stupid people.

I'm not racist, I have plenty of black friends that are good people, but on average, in my experience, black people are more violent and more prone to misbehaving, whether they're kids or adults. Before you get all hyped up, I know there are plenty of violent, misbehaving white people, but I said "on average", and "in my experience". In the late 90s I believe it was, something like 50% of black men were at some stage in the judicial process. If more black kids are acting out and misbehaving, then more black kids will get in trouble, and that's not racist, that's just math. I have no problem with a person's race as long as they're a good person.

This policy does seem a bit strange though, but I guess maybe gangsters wear certain color shoes?

The human way to handle this would have been to call the mother, have her come pick him up. Or better yet, let him hang out in the principles office until school ended or something along those lines. Then tell the mother.

The human way to deal with it would be to just let it go. They're f**king shoes! Besides, what kind of wanky school/kindy has a dress code? S**t, sometimes my daughter comes home in different clothes to the ones she went in!

can't afford shoes... YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE KID!!!!

Seriously, if you have nothing smart to say don't say anything. What if the financialy difficulties came after they had the kid? Should they put the kid up for adoption? B**** are you serious?

All the rest I'd like to say to you right now is so censored that I won't even try.

No but some parents have the latest igadgets and drive expensive cars, yet they bitch about being charged 10c more for baby food at kroger. My hubby worked customer service in kroger and this happened all the time... yuppie parents that have designer clothes and cars, yet they buy thier kids cheap crap. some parents don't have their priorities straight.

And how do you know this is the case?

Idiots who think of themselves before their kids should be shot on sight, I agree but making conclusions that this is the same case is wrong.

She could have easily got shoes from Goodwill or this cheap store called gabes. I've seen shoes for 50c at Goodwill or even lower... 10c at a yard sale.

Absolutely agree, but since they were idiots and felt they had to intervene, I just provided suggestions on what should have been done since they already took the wrong route.

Goes without saying the best thing to do would have been to let it slide. (Y)

Intimidating and humiliating children is a terrible way to enforce dress codes, especially when we're dealing with a 5-yr old; it's not the child's fault that the parents dressed them incorrectly. And it's no surprise to see that race plays a role in this, especially given the state in which it occurred. The police have way better things to be dealing with than enforcing a school's dress code.

When reading this story, keep in mind this is based on a report written by the ACLU and NAACP, who have no agenda whatsoever...

When reading this story, keep in mind this is about a 5-yr old wearing the wrong shoes to school. We're also talking about a state with a legacy of racism and where it is still prevalent.

When I was in high school (early 2000s), I witnessed the beginnings of this, where every little thing was considered to be a gang symbol and banned. The dress code was much more lenient at the time, and school uniforms were unheard of in public schools. Yet misconduct was rare and everybody got along. Anybody two persons could strike up a conversation at random, and we didn't need school uniforms to accomplish this.

Ideas like these are being pushed by ideologues who are, time and time again, exposed to being the biggest hypocrites. Furthermore, extreme views on these matters often escalate and get out of hand, as happened in this story. So please stop listening to these people and bring back some normalcy to the world.

I found two studies which found no correlation between student uniforms and academic success: one and two. If you want to improve conditions in schools among students, attack the problem at its source: get involved in the communities.

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk.
