Font size tiny in forum composer window

Recommended Posts

Using Fx 18, Vista x64. In Fx Options, proportional font size = 16; min font size = 14; UNchecked "allow pages to use their own fonts..."

Font size in posting / replying composer screen is very tiny, compared to size when posts are submitted.

See no way to increase the composing font size permanently. If select a different font & size in editor bar, it resets to blank once leave the composer window.

Read older posts on forum issues about small fonts - was some mention of changing font size "on front page" (of site?), but I find no such option. Nor any in user CP.

Any suggestion on permanently increasing font size in composer window?

Yes, I did - that's what I put in my post. With a minimum size font of 14 in Fx, that should be plenty big. Besides, if I check the box "allow pages to use their own fonts..." it doesn't make the tiny font in composer window noticeably bigger.

And checking that box, makes the font in the regular posts screens MUCH smaller.

The composer window font size doesn't change when I raise the minimum font size in Fx, & force it to use my own font selections.

This issue of font size being far smaller in a forum composing window than the rest of the forum posts, is not something I remember seeing on other forums. Definitely not on any that use decent software, like Neowin does.

It has to be a setting in Firefox because no one else is reporting this issue. I'm sure it'll go away if you try a different browser. My next recommendation would be to backup your bookmarks, reset Firefox (in "about:config"), and try those font settings again. Resetting Firefox will wipe everything (which includes profiles, bookmarks, and settings) but at least you'll be able to narrow down a possible cause of the font issue.

Or do the following:

http://support.mozil...irefox-profiles

Create a new profile and test. This keeps the current in tact so no need to loose your data.

When you say, "It looks fine," that may be subjective - or not.

Used a new profile. The Screen I posted is actual size displayed, when I had Fx font size set at 18, minimum 16, w/ box to allow pages to use their own fonts UNchecked. It may look fine to you, but it's nowhere near a size of 16 or 18, no matter how you slice it. When I raised the font size in options, just now, it made no difference on forum(s) pages.

Maybe that option has become deprecated / has a bug in Fx 17 - 18? It used to work fine. If I changed font size in Fx Options, it used to immediately change size in any forum / page. The more I think about it, the more it seems all fonts on several forums are now small - compared to what they were (when they were using my sizes chosen in Fx). It appears that option's not working - to use your own font sizes. Even the text for submitted posts is now too small for me.

Maybe something ELSE also has to be checked - dunno. An Fx version or 2 ago, font size of 16 would be almost 2x what is displayed now.

The font in screen below isn't even close to 16 or 18.

Just read about a bug that started ~ Fx v17 w/ font rendering. I upgraded to 18.0.2 just now & I CAN now control the size of SUBMITTED posts' font (again). I knew I wasn't imagining it.

But the font in the quick reply or full editor box is still ~ 2/3 the size of submitted posts font (using my Fx settings).

Which is way too small for me, except for VERY short replys.

So, something still prevents the size in the reply composer windows from increasing font size. May be ANOTHER Fx bug they didn't fix (or didn't know about). Normally, the size in an editing screen like this would be roughly the same size as the text of a submitted post (for me) - on most any forum - in the past.

Now, as before upgrading to Fx 18.0.2, only way I can make text in editor larger, is AFTER I type it, select it & choose large font size. But that doesn't affect any further typing, in the same editor screen. Screen below (now w/ Fx 18.0.2) shows posted font size (16) & ? Neowin controlled ? editor font size.

EDIT: Just checked Mozilla's & Kaspersky's forum text & editor screen font size. Editor & submitted posts font sizes are the same size (as most forums have been in the past, for me).

So, THAT part seems related to Neowin or the forum software they use. Which I guess is "Ignition?"

Neowin uses a heavily modified version of IPB for the forum, it's interesting because the actual standard font has no issues for me on a fresh installation of Firefox. When you used a new profile, did you change any setting before browsing the forum? Maybe one of the settings makes it all go pear shaped and somehow doesn't revert?

:iiam:

the actual standard font has no issues for me on a fresh installation of Firefox

does that mean the default font size used in reply composer is the same size as in submitted posts? And are you using your own font size selection in Fx, or is "Allow pages to use their own fonts..." checked in your Fx options?

When I check "Allow pages to use their own fonts...", the font size in editor screen IS as big or bigger than submitted posts. But then, font in both places is very small - for me. On many forums.

Comparing displayed Neowin submitted posts (and allowing pages to use their own fonts) side by side to a word processor, submitted posts font is 9 pt. Too small for me. That's why I can't "allow pages to use their own fonts."

Never say never, but if it was "some Fx setting / profile issue," why would this problem only be w/ Neowin? True, I haven't tested 100 other forums, but when several other major forums don't have an issue with text editor font size (for me & my settings), I'm not inclined to suspect my browser.

ANY site can have an issue displaying some parts of a page, based on browser settings or addons used, but when most sites don't have issue "X" & one site does, it's often an issue w/ the site (a specific part / object) not displaying correctly. I contact 5 or 6 sites / yr (banks, etc.) because part of their site doesn't display correctly in Fx. Often, they find the issue on their end. A lot of the problem is constantly changing code in Fx. Theme & addon devs are getting VERY sick of the constant changes.

    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
