That's just sick. Not much different than grinding up freshly dead people, wouldn't want to waste good meat. No sicker really.

I don't know.... what does Indians think of us eating beef? Eating of pork for Muslims and Jews? Or the very fact of eating meat for vegetarians? It is awfully precious of you to compare horse meat to dead people when meat we in western countries routinely eat meat that people in other parts of the world treat as a deity.

In my country horse meat (from breeding mares) is actually cheaper. It's only expensive in country that list it as a gourmet meat.

but breeding mares are still throwaway meat, just not full of antibiotics and steroids like race and work horses. That meat is cheaper because those horses already paid for themselves many times over with the breeding.

Guess I'm old fashioned in the fact I WOULD NOT want to eat horse meat even if it was labeled correctly! I'm sure it's fine, but doesn't sound cool to me!

If I could find a local butcher that had horse burgers/sausage I would try them. I have seen a site online that does them, but the postage (?6.99) is off putting.

Everyone should have the right to choose what they eat, even poor people. I'm sick of hearing right wing fascists trying to give us all stick just because we aren't rich.

What is your definition of throwaway meat?

Meat that wasn't specifically raised for slaughter. As is the case with you breeder mares. they are raised to breed, after they're doe breeding, they're trash to the owners, so instead of just throwing it away, they sell them cheap to the slaughter for cheap horse meat.

same reason all beef isn't equal. some is made better than others .

I don't know man. Animals raised for slaughter die young. Too young, in my opinion.

As such I have no problem eating old whatever meat, assuming that they had a long, productive life; ate good food and drank good water... which is what they --- in this case the mares --- did.

I am amazed how people are discussed by horse meat. its just as good as beef, and as I know some French, Swiss and southern Germans like horse sausages.

Besides horse meat was emergency food in wars, famine etc.

The problem is with English peoples who see horse not as a domestic animal but as pet.

Much ado about nothing. Offer it to the poor. If they want it, there ya go. Heck, most people eat cow, pig and chicken without a second thought. And deer meat, venison, is quite tasty. I'd bet horse meat is good, too.

Newsflash: most of us are meat eaters! Oh, and if your plane crashes in the Andes, you'd eat human, too.

There's a saying: Beggars can't be choosers. If you're desperate enough, you'll eat about anything. I know this from experience.

They die young because meat from old animals don't taste very well .

The problem is that people would like to know where there meat actually comes from.

It's a fine line between "we slipped some horse meat in" and "we slipped some rabid dogs we found in the gutters".
