Neowin Monthly Photography Challenge [March 2013: Old and New]

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to the first Monthly Photography Challenge that will be hosted by Neowin, it used to exist before, but now it does again!

This will be in a monthly format, with a minor exception. The challenge will conclude a week before the end of the month (24th March, 23rd April etc.) and the voting thread will go up.

That's right, the entered photos will be collected into a single thread with a poll, these will be voted on by everyone and when the poll closes the next theme will be selected.

The theme for this month is Old and New, interpret that how you wish and have fun!

FAQ

Q: What is the current challenge?

A: The current challenge is in the thread title, this will get edited each month.

Q: What are the rules for posting?

A:

  • Photos must be taken in the time frame of that theme (So in the case of March, from today (24th February) to the 24th March. Submission must be on a website that conserves EXIF data).
  • Spam will be deleted as per the forum rules, such as photos for sale.
  • The rest of the forum rules still apply.
  • One picture per theme.
  • Post your photo as a reply to this thread

Q: What sites are permitted for submission?

A:

  • Flickr
  • Picasa
  • min.us
  • smugmug
  • playlookit.com
  • 500px.com
  • DeviantArt.com
  • Google Plus
  • localhostr

Q: Does Neowin get any rights to my images if I post them?

A: Not at all! The only rights Neowin get are simply to say you won and may post it to the front page with full accreditation.

Q: Can Staff/MVC/Veteran/Other Group enter?

A: Yes!

Q: I have a question not answered here!

A: PM me!

It's not a great photo by any stretch of the imagination, but it is perfect for the theme.

It's taken in Belfast, at the new Titanic building, just beside the studios. Shows the old buildings that once were used by Harland & Wolff against the new, very much Titanic inspired Titanic building.

Data from the camera is:

ISO200

f/9.0

1/160

31mm

In terms of entering with film photographs, when you go to upload it to your service of choice ensure it's been uploaded within the time frame, I don't think there is much else I can do in regards to that :p I'll just have to trust that you have taken it in that month ;)

The only prize is simply selecting the next theme, so it gives you a bit of excitement!

Ok, I'll bite. Mind you, I'm taking "old" and "new" in a slightly different direction here... not necessarily technology. But be amused... an "old" blackjack table, and what was then (in 1965) a "new" version of the game. (And they're still trying to make the game electronic!)

I agree with Hum. I think posting your suggestion for next month's theme with your submission will influence people's voting desicion. As in your photo's great but your theme suggestion downright sucks. Or a crap photo with a really interesting theme suggestion. Do you believe the polling would be based entirely on your contribution and not biased by your theme suggestion?

Why cant we pick our own? Such as imageshack?

I would normally say stuff like Imageshack is reasonable, but their terms and rights for photographers aren't exactly fantastic. Sites like Flickr have very good terms put in place for photographer's rights.

I see where you're coming from with the theme suggestion thing, I'll PM the winner after the poll closes then for a theme. That was my original idea but thought this would speed things up, bear in mind this month is the first run, so we're still getting things nailed down. ;)

Hi guys, I'm afraid that every photo that has currently been entered is ineligible for entry since it does not meet the requirements as stated in the original post. Warwagon your photo has no date taken information at all.

The point of this challenge is to get you to go out there with your cameras and get exploring! Not to root through old archives and post random photos from years gone by. ;)

Friendly reminder, last day according to rules is tomorrow!

Also, suggestion chase, you should delete all the disqualified ones to avoid confusion.

I'll post my entry later today!

My go at it:

"Old god, I mean dog, new dog harness" :shifty:

proposed theme: pets ! double :shifty:

This thread didn't really seem to catch on this month!

Edit: doesn't seem to keep exif data, (My guess is since I set the photo to private, anyway let me know and i'll reup it if/in any case )

I would've expected more participation :/ Perhaps this could be posted on the front page to get more attention? But I guess that needs to be considered by the admins?

It was already, that encouraged the influx we saw, but people failed to read the rules and haven't posted since. :( At the beginning of the next month we'll see if we can do another front page post, with the rules in full there too.

It was posted in the front page? I must've missed it!

Don't most cameras have a time and date watermark that can be enabled for film photography ?

----

I have tried for 10 minutes to get a direct link to the image after having to sign up to one of the accepted image sites and failed, so here is the link but I've posted the image using localhostr, because it works (Can it be added to the accepted list of image hosting sites? I can just quickly drag and drop into the client with localhostr

I mean as a Post on the front page, not as a forum post?

Don't most cameras have a time and date watermark that can be enabled for film photography ?

...snip...

Not all of the cameras... some people have it turned off.

Not sure film cameras have them but I remember some of the old compact cameras (point and shoot) have them.

My camera has the date/time turned off. So it won't be printed on each photo every time I take. But it can be shown in EXIF.

    • The very fact that a TPM (v2.0 specifically which is part of the issue I suspect) is now a baseline for any supported Windows installation will naturally mean other vendors will start to leverage it as they know it'll be there. It's called progress, and it's always been the way. A TPM isn't a windows thing, it's just a module designed to securely store keys. Secure boot isn't a Windows thing (although MS are the TCA as I recall hence the upheaval this year as the 2011 certs expire), it's just a way to verify a bootloader is signed. Windows simply leverages them.
