I sure hope they have a few backup plans in place just in case something happens...

This time I am sure the regulations are going to be where there is more Life Vests, Life Boats, than necessary as well as not overcrowding the boat. I read somewhere they were about 40 passengers over the recommended safety limit. Not to mention there is improved communication equipment as well as satellite communication in case they go down.

I sure hope they have a few backup plans in place just in case something happens...

Although with the Costa Concordia and the more recent accident ships are in the news again, these days cruise ships are incredibly safe. The most unsafe vessels are car ferries and even in those cases safety is improving.

Um if everything you own was made in the US you wouldn't be able to afford half of it. People in China get paid $2 a DAY, in America those same people would be making at least $8 an hour + benefits. Then you'd get unions who'd increase their wages too.

Well those companies sell everything they produce to other countries two times higher than they are in the US anyway so it wouldn't make a lot difference. An iPhone 5 in Turkey is 2,000 dollars and it's 650 dollars in the US. There's a huge difference. I'm pretty sure they can sell the iPhone half price here since they make lots of profits in other countries.

Incredibly safe if you can put up with feces and raw sewage all over the place and the odor. :s

Yes that's one accident on one ship. If I told you that one shooting with one gun meant all guns everywhere should be banned I'm sure you'd probably bite my head off. Statistically ships are no more unsafe than any other form of transport.

Also: The original Titanic was not an American ship, and the guy creating the Titanic II is not an American either. It strikes me as being odd that so many Americans are up in arms about the labour being outsourced to China.

I think he is probably referring to even after a fire the ship didn't sink....

I can't believe that companies are still manufacturing stuff in China... Governments should stop that for real. If every country prefers their own country to manufacture then there won't be as high unemployment as there is right now. There are lots of people looking for a job yet companies are still in for China... Just because it is cheap there...Yeah, help China become the biggest economy ever by 2020...

Would you pay $14970 for an ipad?

That will never happen because hiring workers in your own country is far too expensive. As workers in western countries demand higher wages, various benefits and good working conditions etc (things they have every right to have) while workers in China will work for peanuts in **** conditions because they have no other choice. Who do you think the companies are going to employ? companies are all about money and how to make much as possible, they care about little else.

While I totally agree with you that bringing manufacturing "back home" would greatly benefit the home country, there is just too little incentive for massive companies to potentially bankrupt* themselves just to support local workers.

* Alright maybe that is slight exaggeration, but hiring local workers will affect the bottom line and your going to be hard pressed to convince management that reducing the profits of the company to hire local workers is a good thing....

I think it's a great idea, if indeed an exact replica, if used as a history museum.

'God himself could not sink this ship'.....

Sorry, where is it right now?

Acutally, while I'm still posting... Is he going to address the structural wobble the original ship had?

Those links are about more than one cruise ship. Just Google Cruise ship mishaps. People go missing..etc. I do not understand how Carnival stays in business. I do not care who is trying to build this ship, it is not a very good idea. Now if they plan to follow the same course as the original , the idea may be feasible. That is if it does not hit an Iceberg. Oh and if the ship was built in America it would not have hit that Iceberg and it would not be an issue.

What structural wobble are you talking about?

History channel mentioned the ship had to be reinforced because of it's length, the decks were redesigned and strengthened, due to (for lack of a better way to say it) it's sides had a tendency to wobble in open water.

Now I don't know this for a fact, but I have no reason to not believe it neither.

LOL... as much as your misguided arrogance amuses me, the construction of the ship was not at fault for the disaster. No civilian ship on the sea at that time in history would have survived such damage. It was mostly poor corporate management that led to the catalogue of mistakes that sank the Titanic, and I think corporate arrogance is something you yanks know better than anyone else.

I've studied the Titanic extensively and I recall no such reports. The only thing I can think of would be the ship's expansion joints and those were a common feature of shipbuilding at the time, designed to stop ships breaking their back in heavy storms. According to all the survivor testimony I have seen there were no significant issues for the Titanic in that department.

8 shipping disasters all over the world. In 2012 561 people died in shipping disasters. 24x more people died in the united states of america alone from gun violence than died all over the world from accidents aboard ships (and 431 of those were in poor countries). Nor have you provided me any evidence that American ships are better than anyone else's. I know fearmongering is all you yanks know but get your head in the real world and actually do the math.

I can't find it now neither, I'm sure I'm not mistaken, but please note, I'm only going on something seen on TV for all I know that information might have been disproven by now...

It is true that the Titanic's original design called for it to be a bit shorter and they did indeed have to lengthen it but as far as I'm aware it didn't cause the ship to handle significantly differently. The size of the ships however did cause other issues, the infamous incident between the Titanic's sister the Olympic and the HMS Hawk was caused largely by the suction that the immense draft of the ships created in shallow water.

Gun violence is way off of this topic. You seem to be obsessed with guns. I did not say that America's ship building was better. I said that if it was built in America it would not have hit that iceberg . The reason being that it would have taken a very different course. /

surely the cruise route can only approved for summer time only.

i would also prefer it, if the new titanic have some hovering ability, like hovercraft, just in case...

I'm sure the new one will have the latest & greatest radar system, satellite images and other tech gadgets that the first one didn't have.

Sorry, couldn't resist:

<trollpost>

But I can see one major flaw already, the ship cannot EXACTLY retrace the original ship's journey, 1 because the original was built in Ireland, and 2, the iceberg the original ship hit, no longer exists :p

    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
