you don't seem to understand that the business, and the land that it operates on, are private property which is owned by someone. You have the right to tell someone to get the hell of your land for any or no reason.. or even a bad reason.

Someone needs to look up the civil rights act, Try getting a job in a restaurant and implementing a no darkies policy and see how far you get

Unless she had a moral clause in her contract she probably has a good case. Otherwise, probably not.

They probably did. I know some people who went to a similar place--a private, Christian university--and they weren't even allowed to have females in the male dormitories, or vice versa. It was in the documents you signed that you would abide by a certain set of rules. A girl who got pregnant, people caught having (unwed) sex or drinking/doing drugs on premises, guys who got caught 'streaking' or whatever, lots of people got kicked out for things like that. I would imagine the faculty would be held to an even higher standard than the students, so yeah, I could see that happening. It has nothing to do with the country it's in, as it wasn't a government-funded public school and she (presumably) broke the conduct contract.

Actually, the only sort of case I think she has is the gender-inequality thing, since the last line says they later offered a position with the school to her partner/the baby's father. That makes it more about "slut-shaming" and less about everyone upholding the same set of rules--he should have been treated the same way if they were going to do it to anyone. Looking at it that way, I'm glad she's suing, but she probably won't win--for the same reason as the rest of it, it is a private institution. It's crap, but it's the way of it.

I wouldn't agree to attend or work at a place like that.

do you think this woman should keep your job at a CHRISTAIN College if she converted to Islam? She broke with her religion by having premarital sex. It's a terrible example to give to young students whom are having their strongest desires to do that very thing. She doesn't need to be there any more. She signed her own pink slip.

She was pregnant, the government states pregnant woman cannot get fired because they are pregnant. The premarital sex will not work because they only knew about that because she was pregnant. The college will have a tough time convincing a jury (some of which will be women) that they did not fire her because she was pregnant.

My wife went to a Christian high school and there were plenty of teachers there that weren't Christian...

As a Christian man, Jesus also forgave the adulteress. Some Christian groups often forget forgiveness and mercy and exchange it for zealousness.

Who are (we) Christians to condemn and judge?

Some women in Indonesia killed her male son today because she thought his weenie was too small. So do not blame Christianity , worse things happen in other religions in other counties.

Indonesian mother kills son over 'small penis'

I'm gonna go back to this one.

Nothing in that article mentions religion. So why come up with the "other religions" part? Just because she is from Indonesia doesn't mean she isn't Christian.

there's two points to that

1. In Christianity Jesus was GOD. he had the ability to forgive sins in a way normal people couldn't.

2. Anytime he forgave sins it was backed up with "and sin no more"

3. The biggest problem with the world today from a Christian stand point is that people feel no shame in their sins anymore. If a person did a wrong in past generations there tended to be genuine feelings of guilt and fear for their soul. Today people go back to confession week after week with the same sins... and if I'd guess those aren't being forgiven because they never attempt to reform themselves.

we're perfectly able to condemn and judge. That one line from the bible isn't an open invitation to accept any sort of filth into society. never was. The point was that you should be careful on what you judge or that judgment might come back on you.

It is absolutely bewildering to me that we have made so, so many advancements overall as a species, yet somehow many still cling on a bunch of glorified fairy tales that were meant to instill morals into people because generally speaking people are idiots, and because somehow figured out that a society that believed there was nothing else after this life had nothing to lose during this life. How we have come so far in so, so many other aspects, but have stayed in the exact same place in regards to this other aspect, literally boggles my mind.

If religious values keep on growing like this, we will end up no better than any middle east countries (except for a few). This needs to stop, religion as a place, but mot in public. Even religious entities should not have the power to do things like this

A chimp with an IQ of 12 could probably have figured the inference I was trying to make. Ok, let me spell it out a bit more clearly:

Reasonable countries do not have situations where people lose their jobs for things they do as consenting adults in the privacy of their own homes. Things which by rights are not even anyone else's business.

I'm pretty sure people have been fired for similar reason in "reasonable countries". It's just that those cases aren't reported as news.

A woman claims she was fired for having premarital sex by a Christian college in San Diego, California.

Teri James has since filed a lawsuit against San Diego Christian College in El Cajon claiming wrongful termination.

She admits that she became pregnant through having premarital sex, and has claimed that this was the reason the Christian college dismissed her. James has now hired high profile attorney, Gloria Allred, to argue her case against SDCC, according to KGTV.

In November 2012, Allred became the attorney for Natalie Khawan, twin sister to Jill Kelley in the General David Petraeus scandal, during her custody dispute for her son.

James has claimed that she was told by the human resources director at the college that she was not being fired for being pregnant, but instead for engaging in premarital sex. She claims she was given two options; quit or be fired.

Allred has made clear these allegations, telling media sources: "The HR director indicated that she was not being fired because she was pregnant. Instead, she was being terminated because she had premarital sex."

James was reportedly fired from the Christian college four months ago, where she had been employed as a financial aid specialist.

She claims that her employers were satisfied with her work until they learned of her pregnancy out of wedlock.

Do the words *morals clause* ring a bell?

Any professional employee (non-salaried employees in particular) at a religious institution (and a college affiliated with a religion certainly qualifies) will have such a clause in their contracts - sex resulting in pregnancy while not married is a major no-no. (An employee of a public-school district in ANY part of the United States could easily be let go for the same reason.)

It's a straightforward contract violation. No less - but no more, either.

I'm pretty sure people have been fired for similar reason in "reasonable countries". It's just that those cases aren't reported as news.

Likely not. Religious institutions that are NOT affiliated with the Democratic Party in the United States are nearly always judged differently than those that are - and especially by the press.

Is the religion of the college in question one that is seen as *evangelical*?

the rhetoric being used would get you arrested in Europe for hate speech if it was being used against Muslims, Jews, blacks, or Asians. but for some damned reason it's perfectly acceptable to use against Americans. theyarecomingforyou is a bigot to say the absolute least.

Americans aren't a race.

you don't seem to understand that the business, and the land that it operates on, are private property which is owned by someone. You have the right to tell someone to get the hell of your land for any or no reason.. or even a bad reason. Employment isn't a life long contract. No wonder unemployment tends to be much larger in Europe when employers know that hiring someone is likely a life long investment, even if they are lazy or bad at their jobs.

You clearly don't have a clue. You can get fired for being lazy or being bad at a job, having a contract which is subject to discrimination laws and disciplinary procedures is a good thing, it stops companies taking advantage of the employees and employees taking advantage of the employers. The OP is case in point, it makes me sad that you think it's acceptable to fire someone for doing something out of work hours in the privacy of their own home.

I'm pretty sure people have been fired for similar reason in "reasonable countries". It's just that those cases aren't reported as news.

You see 'reasonable countries' protect their employees as they do employers, if a company in the UK fired someone for having pre-marital sex they would be taken to an employment tribunal and would probably have to pay compensation to the employee.

Moral clauses in an employment contract is a RIDICULOUS notion.

Exactly, seta-san - it's called "pot and kettle".

Here's what I find mind-boggling: the SAME folks that decry the established religions not only are acting just as restricting as the folks they criticize, they are often much worse in their closed-mindedness. Mormons, Scientologists, and even Catholics are among the favorite targets; still, despite my OWN issues with the Roman Catholic Church, I don't target ALL religions - let alone all MAJOR religions - with the same brush.

Says the person who thinks that Africans should be left to die. Hypocrisy at it's purest.

Americans aren't a race.

And therefore you feel you are free to criticize Americans as a NATIONALITY - because we're NOT a race?

Jewry and Muslims aren't racial divisions, either - both are religious in nature. (Yet criticize either on that basis and you can indeed get whacked for "hate speech" in the EU.)

So why are Jewry and Muslims safe from hate speech, but Americans aren't?

Could it be that you despise the United States because we took your throwaways and thrived, and especially to the DEGREE that we have thrived?

It's NOT the fault of the United States of America, its government, OR its people that the very folks that YOU threw out and disposed of came here and were successful - that sort of thing is not exclusive to immigrants.

Instead of criticizing the United States for being successful, look at why you lose people to us.

Of course I can criticize(lol) who I want when I want, I don't do it BECAUSE you are American, I do it because you have a backwards set of laws and culture.

I didn't realise disagreeing with American laws and culture is now considered hate speech.

This isn't British Empire thing but when American likens itself to home of the brave, land of the free, world police, greatest and most powerful nation on earth, expect some criticism on how you run things, if you can give you must be able to take.

seta-san did not mention race in her argument. It's a debate I've had with seta-san outside of Neowin, and I actually get it. It has nothing to do with race - however, it has EVERYTHING to do with the same sort of lack of civility that has been the case in the Middle East (especially between certain Arab nations and Israel). The vast majority of African governments are not democratic in ANY sense of the word - let alone as close to a republic as even South Africa is today; worse, all too many have practiced, or tried to practice, the same sort of genocide associated with Hitler, despite most being far away from any of the battlefields of World War II. How is the African Union handling these multiple near-genocides? Largely they aren't - their unstated policy is to let the two sides kill each other.

Throw in a lack of resources for most of the nations of Africa, along with that determined isolationistic streak of the AU, and you have to wonder why SHOULD the rest of the planet intervene if they themselves won't?

Race has NOTHING to do with it.

If criticizing others due to NON-racial differences (I mentioned Jewry and Muslims to make a point) CAN be (and is) considered "hate speech" - though neither is a race - why is criticizing the United States in general, and Americans in particular, fair game?

If criticism based on religion or race is barred, then why is criticism based on nationality acceptable? THAT is the REAL question I asked.

If you continue to put up that sort of skewed law, then no criticism of the United States (or the folks that live in it) can be seen as anything other than jealousy and/or tribalism disguised as nationalism.

And yes - the same applies to all OTHER nationalities.

Moral clauses in an employment contract is a RIDICULOUS notion.

Not only that, but in the UK at least, wouldn't even be legal. No contract clauses can override statutory rights. You cannot even sign those away; you have them no matter what.

Scientology isn't a religion, it's a business; a criminal one at that.

    • I'm not unblocking my camera for this crapola. Sorry, Google.
    • Ummmm that is what is it supposed to do. Just turn if off in settings if you do not want it analyzing your open tabs. Chrome does the same thing with Gemini. Sarfari will do the samething after Apple's AI and even more so with the release of their 27 versions that is now powered by Googles LLM/ML models. Understanding why it is doing it and how it can help you vs jumping to some conspiracy theroy is a much better approach. As long as it can be turned off, all is good. Yes the default should be off but the a lot of people would never discover these features.
    • Just another reason (aside from many others) not to use Edge. Firefox 153.0b5 DEx64 has a similar feature added recently in prior builds that I will turn off at some point when I get around to it. It's the new "Something looks suspicious" page that pops up here and there. It cleverly hides itself between web pages that I've actually visited; as a result, you know, of selecting a web page and telling the browser where to go. The interesting thing is that it does not produce these warnings from pages that I, as the only intelligent user of the browser in my system, have ever directed the browser to open! What seems to be happening is that the browser looks at all the goofy ad links on a web page I do actually open and selects one that "looks suspicious" and then creates the "something looks suspicious" web page, which is neatly inserted, as mentioned, between web pages my RB ("real brain") has directed the browser to load in a session. The thing is, I usually look at links I am considering to follow before I ask the browser to load them, and in cases I have noticed where the link does indeed look suspicious, most of the time I will choose to not follow the link at all. Doesn't everyone do this or something similar? I am picky about what I voluntarily load... (I don't like links that start off fine, with a site designaiton that seems normal enough but then is followed by indecipherable alphanumeric strings many, many lines long, etc. I tend to reject those because they look suspicious. They may not be, but I don't care... I'll stay with Firefox, of course, if for no other reason than they usually let you turn off the junk you don't like. And because it isn't Edge... But at some point Microsoft will come to realize that putting your bookmarks on the left side is a Good Thing for a lot of people, just as Microsoft discovered when it had the bright idea of nailing the Windows taskbar to the bottom of the screen, when for decades Microsoft browsers had left that placement up to the user. They have finally reversed the obscenity of that decision. Finally.
    • Google was using the old CATPCHAs data to train their LLMs. What is the say they won't use this camera data of users to train their LLM? these companies need some strict regulations!
