The Wii U Is Unofficially Dead And You Can Blame EA

Recommended Posts

They are the kind of people who would complain that the WiiU version ran like crap if they had spent time porting the engine over.

I have no doubt that the engine would run just as well on the WiiU if they did the work. I also do not think that at this point in time it's worth it to port the engine for them.

However this is one of this chicken and egg things. and for EA they don't care if the chicken or egg came first. they don't need to have their engines on the console as long is it doesn't have a solid users base, it only makes sense for them to support the platform once it's there. Hence what Nintendo should do is help pay for the development of Frostbite 2/3 on the WiiU.

That way the games are there on the console, so they can sell more consoles, more consoles means more games, which means more console games and so on. and EA is so big and has such a large portfolio of games they are the ones Nintendo NEEDS to get on board to launch the console.

EA has killed a console before... cries... sniffs... DREAMCAST :(

God, that was a good console...

To be honest I don't understand EA's clout... I hate the company, I think they produce sub par games, I will not waste my money on something they produce...

Who will?

To be fair, this has basically a downward trend. Think of how when HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were out - as soon as 1 or 2 of the biggest publishers sided with one, the other went down hill.

.

If publishers see that EA isn't committed to the Wii U you can guarantee that it'll have a negative impact on sales. If this negative impact is great enough, it'll start to make other publishers nervous. If it continues, then other publishers will start pulling out. Hence, the fall of the Wii U.

EA's loss by itself isn't the be all and end all, but if Activision Blizzard decide all of a sudden that EA are right and they too pull out, then that's becoming a rather big loss.

People say that EA games aren't a massive system seller for the Wii and Wii U, but they definitely drive growth. Anybody who disagrees with me is more then welcome to look at the top 10 weekly sales for the Wii and see that for a good portion of them, EA published games hit the top 10, especially during their releases.

Their clout is from being the biggest damn publisher around with some of the best games on book whether you admit it or not.

- Crysis X

- Dead Space X

- Need For Speed X

- Battlefield X

- Everything Sims

- Everythign EA Sports

- Mass Effect

- Dragon Age

And that's just the top of the list. a lot of those are top og their genre, others ARE the genre. And they're all good games, though I personally don't play all of them as they're not my kind of game, I can still admit they're good games.

Not all products will be successful, but I think its too early to call the Wii u a failure. Nintendo is about fun and not graphics, unlike the ps3 and Xbox.

Graphics do not make a game fun, but better graphics in a fun game, make a game more fun.

God, that was a good console...

So to answer your question... A **** ton of people will.

With EA starting to lose money, the fiasco's of there always online DRM (aka Sim City) hurting their sales, and with the announcement of 900 layoff's.

EA may of made the business decision to not support the WiiU just to cut costs and try and stabilize themselves.

That being said, not going to say EA going to collapse, but Nintendo is probably more financially stable company then EA at the moment.

My personal intrested in EA games is now almost non-existent.

I use to love Bioware games, but with Dragon Age II, Mass Effects 3.... no more pre-order, 1st week purchasing. Will wait till I see some game reviews before buying.

Also not a fan of microtransaction built into every future game, so that's a big negative for me.

No EA on WiiI will hurt it but still remains to be seen if it will sink it. Nintendo survived last Gen as the winner, despite not having solid 3rd party game support.

Have to see how WiiU plays out.

When they release Mario Kart, the console will rise again :D

i'd like to agree w/ your optimism. I'm a huge sucker for all things Mario and Mario Kart. i will definitely buy Mario Kart. it was awesome on 3DS and im very excited for it on Wii U.

i doubt the Wii U will be a flop, but i think they marketed it wrong from the get-go, much like the 3DS. So many people were confused about the 3DS. They thought it was just a DS w/ 3D. Then people are thinking that the Wii U is just a Wii w/ the tablet controller.

Nintendo has not done a good job of differentiating these products. Their focus was the 3D instead of the entirely new system. Their focus was the tablet controller instead of a completely new system.

wiiu-history-header.jpg

way i look at it wii u is repeating these 3 systems its like all the same ideas in one system combined with the wii and you get wii u..... any way if it stays the same with hardly any games and continues to stay the same with all the other game developer/system problems its had they need to kill it and release anew system in next 2 years on the level of ps4/720 or go the way of sega....

Seems like a bit of a premature assumption, but Nintendo seriously needs to entice buyers to their console. At this point the Wii U is current gen to PS3 and Xbox 360, REALLY late, too late to be honest. They need to price their system for what it is, a budget system, underpowered compared to even the PS3. 350 is way too much for their premium system, knock that down to 250, hell, knock premium down to 199, and base to 150. It's low, but for a system that's struggling to garner third party support, which is crucial, a drastic move is needed, this isn't like the Virtual Boy, where Nintendo also had two other systems to fall back on. This is their main flagship system here, they don't have anything but the 3DS to fall back on.

In other news, World Of Warcraft is now DEAD!

Love how one idiots opinion can spread like wild fire on the internet. Amazed how many folk take any given statement for total value and then repeat and regurgitate it, as if they themselves have all the inside figures/stats/questions/answers.

Is it too hard to form your own opinion?

Just a quick c&p from wikipedia, but there are some good games to be had from this list...

Battlefield series - Generic FPS (not my style but, yes they sell)

Burnout series - no games have been released since 2011

Command & Conquer series - it's a nice one but the last ones were crappy

Crysis series - it's fun and one of the best game in the genre

Dead Space series - the first one was OMG , the second one was okay , the 3rd is ... boring and only in coop is interisting as playing with carver

Dragon Age series - the 2nd was so lame, it gave another meaning to the word lame ...

FIFA series - it sells good , not my style

Fight Night series - never heard O.o

Harry Potter series - NOOOOO

Madden NFL series - never heard O.o

Mass Effect series - YESS SO MUCH YEEES (except for that 3 colored ending)

Medal of Honor series - quite the fun

NBA Live series - not my play style

NCAA Football series - not my play style

Need for Speed series - not my play style

NHL series - not my play style

Rock Band series - quite fun

SimCity series - they screwed up with this one big time ... with the microtransaction system and bad release

The Sims series - adictive

Skate series - not my play style

SSX series - not my play style

Star Wars series - never been a fan

So to answer your question... A **** ton of people will.

So yeah lots of people, but money , but if they continue to make more and more errors like the ones i stated, i think they will have a bad time ... look at the reactions for their biggest franchises ... like someone stated , they are losing pre-purchases (mine of dead space 3, simcity , mass effect 3 )

way i look at it wii u is repeating these 3 systems its like all the same ideas in one system combined with the wii and you get wii u..... any way if it stays the same with hardly any games and continues to stay the same with all the other game developer/system problems its had they need to kill it and release anew system in next 2 years on the level of ps4/720 or go the way of sega....

Nintendo virtual boy caused people to have headaches and eye strain.

Saturn was expensive, came out too soon after the had the 32x / SegaCD drive add-ons (also expensive) for the genesis came out, and no backwards compatibility.

Dreamcast did well in the US, but got creamed in Japan, eventually losing to the PS2.

The Show number of days item label is changed to Show from days ago to better reflect what it does. Bug 436105 - esc key not working as expected in register: Enable the escape key to cancel a field edit. Bug 797384 - Gnucash doesn't handle commodity prices with big numerator/denominator properly. Bug 798004 - Next gen UI for stock transactions Bug 799314 - Add "enter now" option in scheduled transaction editor. tab to allow users to select the scheduled transactions to be included in a “Since Last Run…” window. Improve C++ implementation of QofBook. Correct the Doxygen doc for qof_instance_get/set_kvp. [gnc-log-replay.cpp] fix incorrect guid dump Add some Boost library requirements needed by libgnucash-guile to CMakeLists.txt so that missing feature will fail at configure time. Use Compile-time Regular Expressions instead of std::regex in gnc-filepath-utils.cpp and instead of boost::regex in the CSV importer, with the CTRE v3.11.1 header added to borrowed [gnc-filepath-utils.cpp] null check char* arguments Add ChartJS licenses. Removed AEX from list of commodities. euronext.com is now using JS based anti-webscraping. [report-core] always offer options summary in reports. This is useful to debug reports. The Add options summary option is removed because it's no longer optional. Remove remaining obsolete IMContext from sheet Fix blurry text in HiDPI offscreen-rendered widgets Add port field to database connection dialog: The convention of appending the port number after the host isn't obvious. When editing a split in the register treat the account as being changed only if it isn't the one selected before editing instead of if the user performed an edit Return immediately from qof_book_destroy if hash_of_collections is null. If qof_book_destroy is called on a QofBook* freshly created with qof_book_new (usually because it was used to create a session that now must be destroyed) it would try to empty the non-existent hash tables, crashing. Clean up Flathub metadata to solve warnings at flatpak build time. Be consistent in naming GncPluginPage and GncPluginPageRegister HTML: Remove unimplemented function declarations. [gnc-html.cpp] remove unused buggy string conversion functions Convert libgnc-html to C++ Apply -Wall -Werr -Wmissing-prototypes to C++ compilation on Windows and fix the resulting errors. • Microsoft finally launches WSL Containers in public preview by David Uzondu Microsoft has announced that WSL containers, a feature that allows developers to run Linux containers natively inside Windows without the need for Docker Desktop, is now available in public preview several weeks after Microsoft previewed it at Build 2026. To use the new container feature, you first have to install the latest pre-release version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux by running a quick update command in your terminal: wsl --update --pre-release After installing, you'd get access to the new Linux container CLI (wslc.exe) and the programmable API. Microsoft said that the CLI has a "familiar format" that matches the toolsets developers already use every day. If you know standard Docker commands, your muscle memory will translate directly to wslc.exe, which even features a built-in alias called container.exe. You can quickly run a full Ubuntu KDE desktop container by exposing ports, or pass your graphics card straight into a machine learning environment to run PyTorch workloads. Passing the --gpus all flag inside the run command instantly links your hardware. Image via Microsoft As for the API, developers can now embed Linux container operations directly inside native Windows applications without exposing the command line to users. The team integrated the API directly into MSBuild and CMake, so developers can define container steps directly in project files. Apart from bringing the CLI and API into public preview, Microsoft also said that it's working on a new default file system called virtiofs to speed up file transfer rates between Windows and Linux. Microsoft also introduced an experimental networking mode named consomme, which resolves compatibility issues with corporate VPNs by routing Linux network traffic straight through Windows. One thing to note about WSL containers is that they don't run in your standard WSL distributions; instead, every application and CLI session spawns its own lightweight Hyper-V utility VM in the background. This basically reduces the chances of one app snooping on the container of another app.
    • Google reportedly limited Meta's Gemini access over limited AI compute by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly limiting Meta's use of its Gemini AI models after Meta tried buying more computing capacity than even Google could supply. According to the Financial Times, Google told Meta in March that it could not provide the full Gemini capacity that Meta had requested. This shortfall even disrupted and delayed some of Meta's internal projects. Due to this, Meta even told its employees internally to use AI tokens more efficiently. Meta wasn't the only one to get hit by this sudden refusal by Google; even other customers were affected. But Meta was hit harder because of its unusually high demand for Google's models. The move from Google makes it evident that companies all over are in limited supply of both infrastructure and compute. Alphabet said in April that Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year-over-year to $20 billion in the first quarter, helped by enterprise AI infrastructure and AI solutions. In pursuit of more compute, Meta had earlier signed a multi-billion-dollar AWS agreement as well as a large AMD GPU deal for AI data centers. But the crunch would be short-lived as both Meta and Google have also ramped up infrastructure investments heavily. Meta said in November that it was committing more than $600 billion in the U.S. by 2028 for AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce expansion. In the first quarter of this year, Meta also raised its expected capital expenditure for 2026 to a range of $125 billion to $145 billion, citing higher component pricing and additional data center costs for future capacity. However, this doesn't make the company immune to the current dependence on outside suppliers. Meta has also spent many years promoting Llama as an open-weight alternative to closed models from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. But if the reported reliance on Google's Gemini models is severe enough for internal work to get impacted, then it looks like even frontier labs and Big Tech aren't fully self-sufficient. • I like to reminisce about the good old days, way back in autumn 2025 when building a gaming machine was fun and the drives were about $150 when you caught a deal. Yes duh, back in the day we had it gone. Then baby Skynet came along, hiding in AI datacenters demanding more processing power until it reached singularity. End of a not totally fictional story.
    • My experience in the past with older Windows 11 builds was not great on unsupported machines but I recently used Rufus to put the latest build on a older 5th Gen Core Thinkpad T that we upgraded with a SATA SSD and 8GB of RAM four years ago when hardware was reasonable and it seemed pretty fast and solid. Customer is very happy with the performance and will probably get four more years out of that venerable laptop that he loves so much. Another customer just retired his Dell Studio laptop from 2009 running Windows 10. It got an SSD over 10 years ago and did everything he needed it to for 17 years but he also retired last year and is happy doing everything on his iPad now.
