I'm still using 12.15 (Linux). They say they'll keep up with security updates for it and not force anyone to switch to 15 until they feel that 15 has most (all?) the functionality of 12.15*. I hope that's the case.

i think you'll find Opera will eventually close its doors just like Netscape. i have never really liked Opera an i cant see the point in using it now, they got rid of Bookmark Manager, they claim not many people use bookmarks anyway, but now for those peopl that use bookmarks have to download a Bookmark Manager Extension which is still pretty useless

Opera used to be my favorite browser by far, it was snappy and completely customizable. Ultimately what made me switch to FF is how so many web pages are broken in Opera. It's rendering of pages was sub-par at best. Half the time I had to mask Opera as FF in order to render a site correctly.

 

Hopefully this new browser engine will solve a lot of these issues.

Yeah same, this is why Next is awesome, once they add Bookmarks back it's the complete browser

Which means Opera rendered the pages just fine. it's the web developers who are artificially sending bad code to opera.

Maybe, but I think in majority of cases Opera should benefit from using the Webkit engine which is vastly more supported by websites out there. Their original Presto engine was struggling compared to other engines.

 

The thing is, web sites aren't supposed to support rendering engines, they're supposed to support the HTML standard.

I use to be a huge Opera fan some time ago. Been using Chrome for years now. Decided to give this a try and all I felt was a huge disappointment. I tried the regular Opera as well. It honestly feels like they took a few steps back. I use to love Opera back in the day but man, times really have changed for the worse it seems like! :(

its gonna take a fair amount of time for Opera to be even Usable again. but  yes since Chrome dev-m 30 came out i been using it all the time

When will they open the dev stream of opera, they said they would have the dev stream when they released the full 15 or next 16. but if it's anywhere, I sure can't find it. 

well they should announce it on there blog but it aint been there. only the Beta links has been there.  but as i said above its gonna take awhile till Opera is usable again. without Native bookmarks manager i dont  care for it

Well I understand their reasoning for not doing the bookmarks right away, since I use it pretty much as they explained. well except I don't use the start page either, I have all the sites I use in tabs. and I have a massive unusable dump of a bookmarks page where I can't find anything since it's a dump of semi organized"I might need/want this later" stash. It's extremely rare I actually use it to open a site, and I usually forget about any site I think I needed to remember anyway...

Going by the complaints in the blog post comments they axed a lot of features Opera users liked. RSS, M2 mail client, Opera Link etc.

On the positive side it's now based on Chromium and the Blink browser engine rather than Presto.

 

I'd woudln't say that's on the postive side by switching to that POS Chrome (blink) engine!! :x

 

Never once used any of those "features" you mention either. Actually, that's a lie. I did use the mail client once, for a minute.

Opera based on Blink as it stands now, isn't different to Chrome for the most part, so folks who like Chrome will probably like new Opera. Unfortunately for long standing Opera, up to 12.x, users Chrome and new Opera are just toys, basic browsers with little or nothing that separates them from the crowd.

 

Looking now at how Presto was superior to everything else on the market, makes me sad, since not a single other engine (WebKit, Blink, Trident, Firefox) can't come even close to Presto's efficiency. My browsing habits were largely influenced by Presto's speed, memory management, features and truly fantastic optimizations handling the extensions. I could Open more than 50 tabs, with dozen extensions active and Opera would be zippy as if I had only one tab and no extensions opened.

 

This can't be said at all for Opera 15 and above. Just like Chrome and Firefox it starts to crawl with 15+ tabs and several extensions loaded, eating up combined huge amounts of memory influencing the entire OS. I do not have high hopes for new Opera, especially not for a "rapid development" marketing that came from Opera team as they were releasing Opera 15 beta.

 

It seems to me that I will be on Opera 12.x for quite some time, even though there are more and more sites not supporting Opera 12.x anymore. I just can't find a worthy alternative.
