Wandering around the tower I noticed today an area on the left with merchants from something apparently called "new monarchy".

What's interesting is that in the description of some of the items they sell it says something... I don't remember the wording but it was something like the actions of the character counting towards that faction when wearing that.

Looks like there'll be some kind of competition between factions.

Yeah there are actually 4 factions in the tower, at least so far in the Beta. They all have to do with the Crucible though. If you go to a map-bot in the tower, look for the crossed-swords (guns?) icon. There are five on the map but one is for the Crucible vangaurd. The other four are the factions.

I hope there are PVE factions of some sort. Actually, at this point I'm hoping Bungie is adding just as much stuff to PVE as they are for PVP. I'm really hoping they add some sort of horde-mode for end-game PVE content. That way those of us who don't like PVP as much have something to do that is repeatable but dynamic.

Played a few hours last night, enjoyed this a lot more then I expected to. The firing mechanics weren't as soulless as some of the videos I saw and there was a decent amount of recoil feel back from the guns. The no-respawn area's really do get difficult, even when you're playing in a 3 man fireteam on normal, a couple of us went down a few times.

I hope the full game is as big as it feels like it could be, we did a little exploring and found area's I could have sworn we had not been to during the story so there seems like a large amount of exploring to be done. The enemies respawn pretty quickly too so you can always find some action to get in on.

has anyone tried looking up the grimoire cards they've unlocked? All of mine say "redacted" in the contents, but others have said they actually get little bits of lore and facts. Why are mine all redacted?

Yeah they are hiding that information because they do not want to spoil stuff in the game before it comes out. which i suppose is understandable being that from the Beta you cannot really tell what is going on in the story.

so I finished level 4 story, and level 5 didn't unlock. what the hell?

nevermind. it seems it only goes up to level 4 story on xbox. what I was really after was unlocking The Crucible, which gets unlocked when player levels to 5. in multiplayer, it looks and feels eerily similar to titanfall, from the gameplay to the UI elements.  did anybody else get that?

Felt just like Halo to me. Walk a bit, BAM! Dead.

Much fun so wow /s

I'm probably going to cancel my preorder. It's a FPS MMO, and while it's not bad, MMO's aren't my cup of tea. The execution doesn't seem as involved as some MMO's, which is a plus. The PvP is a complete turn off from what little I played of it. Too much like Halo MP. Different from a typical campaign FPS and not quite the same as, say, Fallout 3.

That was my first impression of PVP too. But when I got over the initial frustration, learned the maps, and payed attention to the radar I did a lot better. It's actually quite fun now. The time-to-kill does seem a little short, but hopefully that's easily tweak-able. I just make sure to stay with at least one teammate and pay attention to the radar, and it's helped tremendously.

I would also not classify Fallout 3 as an FPS. It's really an FPRPG in my opinion.  :)

Well after a couple of days of playing the beta, I feel like its a pretty good game. I haven't touched PvP though. I have never been interested in that side of mmos, so that has not changed here. Visually, I think it looks nice, particularly the vista views. When you look out over the environment, or look out from the tower section, you get some amazing views. I have sat around in several areas just recording clips of the views

I have been fortunate to have some friends jumping on with me, which makes the game so much more fun. The gun play does remind me of Halo, but since I was fine with that before, its fine here. I chose to run the warlock class first and I'm glad I did. It really adds some cool options when you run with a team using the other classes. At max level, I do feel fairly overpowered, which I'm enjoying right now  A lot of people seem to be running hunter, so I'm glad I chose warlock. It seems like the most unique class at first glance. Speaking of the difficulty, even though I do feel a bit overpowered now, I can still die in the wrong situations, especially if I'm alone, so I'm still getting an enjoyable challenge.

Right now, my favorite moments are the public events. Those are still challenging and I'm constantly running around in the explore section hoping one will happen. Seeing a half dozen, to a dozen or more people suddenly descend on an enemy during an event is pretty darn cool. I have completed all of the story missions, so all that remains is exploring and running through missions again to upgrade my weapons and powers. I do like the upgrade system though, it gives a real incentive to stick to a certain weapon for an extended time.

I do wish they added more map options, especially while in the exploring section. This could just be the beta, but I would like to be able to bring up a map while in the exploring section and either tag favorite locations or 'jump' to those places. At my current level, there are a few exploration locations that are just more challenging then the rest, but its annoying having to remember how to get to them via various buildings. Plus, when I need to go back to the tower to collect rewards, I always have to start in the same spot for exploration.

I had a lot of fun with it late last night after it download the 10 frickin GB of map data. Is that true that beta ends this Sunday? If so, if I preorder do I stay in beta until release? I guess that's a double edge sword because I guess I don't want to play through the whole thing before it is even released.

I would really like a map in explore mode too, trooper11. That was the one thing I really needed because Old Russia is surprisingly huge.

The beta ends on Sunday for everyone.

It's not that sort of beta :p It's only a small portion of the game to help them with bugs / network prep.

The beta might be extended for a few days longer like they did with the Alpha, but when it ends everyone will lose access.

Do any of these rewards carry over into the final game? I've not kept up with the news.

There is an event happening tomorrow at 2PM PST, I think, that will give players the only 100% confirmed permanent reward for the beta.

There is currently a rumor going around that the Iron Banner class reward will also carry over. But it's generally agreed upon that no weapons, armor, or other items will carry over. Hence my curiosity about the IB rewards. :)

I am starting to wonder if the 24Mb patch from yesterday was just a patch to re-enable the beta i have not noticed a single change in the game so far since the patch. Nice to be back in now though. Been farming a lot of spinmetal and trying to do as many missions as possible to get my vanguard rep up.

According to an interview with Bungie the patch was to fix inconsistent frame timings. At 30FPS frames are supposed to arrive 33ms apart. But they were ranging from 20-50 giving a stutter, which would give the illusion of a much lower framerate. - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-vs-destiny-ps4-beta

Anyone know why the hell the pvp matches keep ending a few minutes early even when it's still 6v6? Is it like first to 20000 points or something? It's really annoying when the game is close it just ends for no reason.

First to 20K, or till the timer runs out yes.

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
    • you can also do this with this tool: PowerSettingsExplorer made by mbk1969 at 3dguru forum.. I found it by accident researching on modern standby and annoying quirks of it in 2022
