we've now learned that that the system's 500GB hard drive can be removed and upgraded. Sony Worldwide Studio Head, Shuhei Yoshida, confirmed the news via Twitter early this morning. The move gives the PS4 yet another advantage over the Xbox One, which makes the hard drive inaccessible to consumers.

May be old news to some but doing a search via the forums shows no topics about this and it is great news to the PS community who want the ability to upgrade their PS4s.

Yeah its been known for a while. Its not any more an advantage this gen than it was last gen. You can hook up any external to an X1 or just use the unlimited cloud storage.

I'm sure a few people will utilize it, plus it beats buying a new console just to have more storage on your console. Can buy a 4TB hard drive which will increase your storage 8x and not have to worry about storage for a long time.

Unlimited cloud storage is nice but I personally wont use it, If I upload a movie I have to re-download / stream it from the internet, if my connection isn't so great it means it will pause during buffering or if I'm on a download limit I will be using up my usage to watch a movie I already had.

In Australia the two largest ISPs offer only 500GB max uploads/downloads per month on their broadband plan, with my digital collection it will take 4 Months just to upload the movies to the Xbox cloud storage if I don't use the internet for anything else.

For games also, I can buy digitally and store 8x more games on the console if I upgrade to a 4TB hard drive. It comes down to time also, I dont want to delete games from my hard drive when im running out of space and then when I want to play the game again I have to re-download it which takes some time even with the play-as-you-download feature the PS4 has because it still needs to download core game files and initial game levels.

I'm confident I can fill up the 500GB, but a 4TB harddrive or when the next 6-8-10TB ones start coming out probably not.

You can still buy a 4TB drive for the X1, you just have to hook it up as an external drive rather than internal. Its not much more expensive.

Xbox One external drive can be used to store games you purchased digitally?

A extra few bucks wont really be an issue, but the 360 didn't allow games to be stored on external hard drive (Its been a while since i tried maybe they changed it?) and the PS3 same as the PS4 wont allow external hard drives for games from what I've gathered.

Ah yes, a space between hard + drive would've been the issue,

Thanks and for further discussion of topic please discuss in above mentioned thread.

An external drive connected to the X1 can be used for everything the internal drive can be used for :)

They changed their tone when they dropped memory cards and allowed you to format USB sticks. You could install XBLA and put gamesaves on them, don't believe disc installs work. This was limited at 16GB, then upped to 32GB. Would be nice if the X1 just didn't care.

Or you could do it the sane way and have all of your media stored on a NAS or home server so they are easily accessible from more than one device at home and you could even access them from any internet enabled device while away. As for the X1's cloud storage is best used for things like game saves. This way the allotted 500GB hard drive is more than enough for games and apps.

You can still buy a 4TB drive for the X1, you just have to hook it up as an external drive rather than internal. Its not much more expensive.

So you can't replace the X1's HDD? Why not? I am all for enabling ext. HDDs, but I don't see the reason to deny consumers the ability to upgrade their internal storage as well.

.... Unless of course you want to charge them exorbitant prices on branded internal drives.

They don't make 4TB 2.5" HDDs.

Yeap, have done on the 360 since around 2010.

Its good that they've kept this feature moving forward. God knows why they've removed it for the X1.

Probably because it's such a niche desire that is remedied even more by letting people use external drives for everything that it's not worth their time to implement the ability to swap the OS (or rather, three OS's) onto a new hard drive.  Nobody cared much in the end last time around, so why bother this time.  Choice is nice, but sometimes not worth the time, effort, and money to implement.

Fast out of the way internal beats hanging external (especially with front USB only) and Cloud any day IMO. But do consoles really need huge storage? If there were rear USB 3.0 ports, I "might" tend to agree with you, but in the living room, the less wires and boxes the better.

I'd rather see, with the more PC-like innards, better SSD support. The PS3 with SSD shows only modest improvement and no/trim, collection support.

No they don't, which is probably part of why MS isn't bothering.  The Xbox One uses USB 3.0, so if you've got something that supports that, it should be plenty fast.

I see this as a plus for the PS4 but also see that MS already have this covered with the external Hard Drive situation (which can be used for anything the internal can be) and the unlimited cloud storage.

hooking an external storage to USB, it will use up an USB port (duh),

which means less stuff can be plugged to Xbox One's USB when somebody need to to external storage just because the Xbox One internal HDD became inadequate.

possible USB stuff:

- mouse

- keyboard

- steering wheel

- Flight stick

- VR Glasses

- Lightgun

- ...

- External HDD/SSD

Just to be clear, when I said internal beats, I meant for aesthetics and convenience of not having another box wired somewhere. USB 3.0 will get you the native max speed of anything except an external SSD as far as speed goes. With 64GB USB 3.0 drives pushing 200MBs/100MBs R/W for ~$55 that's a better option IMO.

But still, rear USBs for external storage which neither have. Horrible cost saving measure.

Kind of off topic, but has there been any talk regarding using a SSD in the next gen consoles (obviously just on the PS4, at this point)?

It would be nice to have the ability to put in a 256GB+ SSD and get the extreme speed benefits. From what I understand, doing this on the PS3 and 360 did absolutely nothing in terms of speed.

(xbox) - I didn't care about the lack of drive until they stated that all games will be installed on the HD.  Granted I only play a handful of games at a time and will most likely not need the full HD, i would rather not have another thing to have to plug in.  My area behind my tv stand is already a rats nest of wires.  So I really dont understand the reasoning behind not allowing a HD swap.  Only thing I can think of is the amount of space the OS(s) take up and would need to be stored somewhere other than the hard drive.. oh well.

Back on topic-

Glad Sony stuck with the option to replace the hard drive (although I never thought they would skip it this generation).  I am not sure how many "average Joe's" are going to replace their drives but the gamers will certainly take advantage of this if they DL a ton of games.  I'd imagine the video clips stored will also take up a decent amount of space..

Wasn't this common knowledge months ago?

You could install XBLA and put gamesaves on them, don't believe disc installs work.

You could but performance sucked or didn't make a difference in most cases.

That's exactly why. Thank god for modders ;) I still get a laugh out of Sony charging ?15 for 8 MB back in the day   Internal > external any day. Marcus Beer put it best; "1 box to rule them all", + DVR box + x external drives + X360 = not 1 box at all. Already have enough electronics that need charging/powered I don't want to be hooking up endless EXTs.

Doesn't work on non scanning displays, also wireless.

Also, USB hubs.

Armor A80 1TB USB 3.0 bus unpowered external (military drop specs and waterproof). $79. If you can live with another cable and drive to somehow place from the front without your home theatre looking like PC workbench, not too bad. I'm going to conclude point for PS4, but not a big one. Would be more significant if you could buy a PS4 with no drive, which will not happen.

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
