Windows 8.1 RTM Pro/Enterprise original iso's will be leaked by Wzor

There wasn't an upgrade option for me, only options available where to keep personal files only or keep nothing.

Are you on the 8.1 preview? If so that is expected.

I'm trying to put it on my SP but looks like it won't keep my apps, etc in place. It only gives me the option to keep my personal files. Hmmmm, not sure what to do.

Surface Pro, just running vanilla Windows 8 Pro at the moment. I'm not sure if it will install all the correct drivers if I install 8.1. I'll do a backup image of it and try it out and report back.

If you're installing the ISO file, you wont be able to do an upgrade.  The only upgrade path is through the Windows Store ... sorry..

That's very annoying, I'll do a clean install on the SP and see if it picks up the drivers, etc. If it works well, I'll throw it on my desktop.

I assume you work at MS?

No, but this info has been common knowledge for some time now.

From the front page article ...

Seeing as Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8, users in our forums are stating you can use your Windows 8 key to activate and remove the watermarks. It?s that simple and multiple users have no confirmed that this works. Windows 8 keys can't be used to install the leaked 8.1 builds though, but there is a key floating around that can be used to install, then simply change that key to your genuine 8.0 key and activate.

Yeah, I figured it was fine from my desktop that's still on 8.0, besides I do have the win 8 key I used for the clean install on this.  I was really wondering about my Samsung tablet that has the 8.1 preview installed but for which I have no key.  I'm guessing if I just start the installer from within the preview it'll be fine though even if it does a clean install or will I actually have to rollback to 8.0 and then upgrade to 8.1 RTM?   I don't care about losing my installed apps on the tablet, no biggy there.

Magical jelly bean should be able to get you the information regarding the key used on your Samsung tablet. It is a great utility for such things!

Okay, don't put it on your Surface Pro. It doesn't detect drivers and you can't roll back to a previous Windows 8 image (which was incidentally created by Windows 7 backup) nor will it let you 'Reset Your PC'. Have to find a way to unbork it...

So, if you installed the 8.1 preview via the store on a tablet will you then get a new update notification from the store again to 8.1 RTM or do you have to rollback to 8.0 first?   I'm going to wait till GA and see how this all plays out.

Ouch!

Ouch!

Luckily I don't use the SP for anything important so I'm not too worried about its downtime. I should be able to recover the image using a Windows 8 USB.

I don't think that's correct. Something may have gone wrong with your particular install or your hardware may be failing. I've, um, heard it worked fine for someone else.

Not experiencing this issue myself. Installed 8.1 with no issue, activated using the OEM key (had to retrieve it from BIOS).

Hmm, lucky. I'm trying to do a clean install incase something screwed up on my install but it won't boot off USB. Just keep getting a 'the boot configuration data for your pc is missing' error when booting off usb :(

I didn't boot from USB. I was going to use an external DVD drive, but what I ended up doing is to mount the ISO (double-click), and then run setup.exe. Simply chose to keep nothing, and it's like a fresh install. Only difference is that the partitions are brand new. Took maybe 7 minutes to have a "fresh" install.

    • The consumer ESU is ending in 4 months. LTSC isn't now, never has been, and never will be for consumer use, it is for OT usage - plant machinery, medical devices, manufacturing equipment etc. LTSC requires a Microsoft EA. You can't legally obtain LTSC to run on your PC at home.
    • Hmm actually looks decently interesting!
    • Being on GitHub doesn't make something safe. Like any unofficial scripts to do x or y this caters to people with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. If you want to do what this does, and you actually know what you're doing then write your own script (or maybe just add the reg keys yourself) if you don't have the ability to read and understand what a script is doing, and especially don't run it with elevated privileges. Or in this case just use an MSA, sign up the normal route, and stop trying to push water up hill
