Microsoft confirms the launch of Power Fx, its new low-code language
by Hamza Jawad
Last month, Microsoft unveiled the 2021 release wave 1 plans for the Power Platform and Dynamics 365, describing a host of new capabilities that would be arriving for both in the next few months. More recently, last week, rumors of the tech giant readying the release of a new low-code language for the Power Platform started circulating.
Today, at its Ignite 2021 conference, Microsoft has confirmed these rumors, launching 'Power Fx', its first low-code programming language for logic customization across the Power Platform. Rooted in Excel, the language utilizes the knowledge of Excel users to make it easier for citizen developers to perform low-code development. Professional developers, meanwhile, can make use of professional developer tools to accelerate app development in the platform.
For now, Power Fx can be used to develop canvas apps in the Power Apps service, though later, it is primed to become "the consistent language" across the whole Power Platform. The implementation for the open-source language will be made available through GitHub later this year.
As far as other components of the Power Platform are concerned, Power Virtual Agents have received new AI capabilities to help build smarter chatbots. More specifically, these include 'topic overlap detection' to improve detection of overlap between topics and improve trigger accuracy, and 'topic suggestions from chat transcripts', which suggested new topics based on chat transcript analysis of previous conversations.
Similarly, Power BI Premium's latest update brings it up to Gen 2, introducing the following capabilities for users:
Flexibility to license per user or per capacity Faster processing — up to 16x performance boost with Microsoft managed architecture Autoscale to automatically add capacity when needed Consistent and reliable cost management with utilization metrics A preview price list for the Premium Per User capability has also been released to enable customers to license Premium features.
New features that span across all Power Platform services include a new admin center, security improvements, and reporting enhancements. And finally, Power Automate Desktop will now also be included in Windows 10, allowing users to get access to robotic process automation (RPA) capabilities at no additional cost.

PowerPoint's Presenter Coach is now available for Office Insiders on Mac
by João Carrasqueira
Microsoft has announced that its Presenter Coach feature for PowerPoint is now available for Office Insiders enrolled in the Beta channel on macOS devices. The feature was first announced almost two years ago, and it relies on artificial intelligence and speech recognition to help users improve their presentation skills so that they're more engaging and efficient. It also came to Android last year.
Essentially, Presenter Coach listens to what the presenter is saying, and it tries to catch common malpractices that make a presentation less appealing. If the user makes long pauses during the presentation, for example, or if there's constant reuse of sounds like "um", the PowerPoint's Presenter Coach will let them know so they can address it. It also detects monotone speeches that can make a presentation less interesting.
To use Presenter Coach on PowerPoint for Mac, you'll need to head into the Slide Show tab and choose Rehearse with Coach. The feature requires a stable internet connection and, of course, a microphone, be it the one built into your device or an external one.
Currently, Presenter Coach is only available for Office Insiders on macOS running version 16.27 (build 21021100) or newer. It also only works in English for now, though Microsoft says more languages will be supported down the line.

Microsoft will soon begin throttling Exchange mailboxes
by Usama Jawad
Microsoft's proprietary email hosting service Exchange Online - typically utilized by Outlook - has had an upper limit for emails received by "hot recipients" for quite some time. This term encompasses users who receive over 3,600 messages in their mailbox per hour. So far, this has been a soft-limit that Microsoft has not really enforced, but starting from April, this situation will change.
Microsoft has stated that in order to optimize email flow across mailboxes and to ensure capacity across the Exchange services, it will begin enforcing its existing limit of being able to receive 3,600 messages per hour. The company says that when tenants and mailboxes go beyond this limit, services for other customers are disrupted as well, causing delays in emails being received due to network resources being utilized by "hot recipients".
The Redmond tech giant says that once it begins to throttle tenants, emails sent to full mailboxes will receive a non-delivery report. The threshold will be automatically reset every hour. According to the dedicated webpage, this limit applies to all of the following subscriptions:
Microsoft 365 Business Basic Microsoft 365 Business Standard Office Office 365 Enterprise E1 Office 365 Enterprise E3 Office 365 Enterprise E5 Office 365 Enterprise F3 As Microsoft begins to enforce this limit starting in April 2021, it has encouraged admins to keep an eye on activity across mailboxes. The firm will start with a higher threshold and keep lowering it incrementally until it reaches the official limit of 3,600 messages per hour so organizations have time to adapt to the change.
Admins will also receive new insights and reports about the process in the Exchange Admin Center, allowing them to track mailboxes going over the threshold. Microsoft does not expect a significant number of mailboxes to be affected by this change.
