What I really like from the keynote yesterday is how well iOS and OS X are going to be integrated. It will be a truly continuous experience by the looks of things. Very cool.

Not going to lie, makes me wonder if I'll go back to an iPhone because of how everything is integrated. I just like Android as a phone.

After the keynote I was thinking "god damn I kind of want an iPhone again". The problem is I also want a Macbook Air (when it gets a retina display). I love my Android phone but only really because it is bigger than the iPhone 5s. Hopefully the iPhone 6 will be a nice 5" phone with a decent battery. I much prefer iOS over Android and with all of these integration bits coming it is looking like a really nice setup. Steve Jobs would be very happy to see all of the integration finally happening so cleanly and transparently. They did a great job if it really does works as in the demo.

I really wish Windows Phone worked with Windows so well. Microsoft keeps going on about how great the integration is but it just isn't and it needs a lot of work which I don't think Microsoft will have ready any time soon.

I like how they are finally opening up iOS some what. I love swyping on my Nexus 5, and I love Nexus 5. I like how it's open. I like widgets on my main screen like the weather one, and I also like smartwatches.

Does FB Message chat heads pop up on iOS like they do on Android?

There are chat heads for now in the main FB app, but they can't appear outside the FB app unlike Android... if I'm not mistaken.

If you've installed the Messenger app, there are no heads anywhere. (And that'll be the default soon given FB is phasing out its in-app chat.)

Using iOS 8 now, its actually REALLY snappy considering its early stages. Loving it so far. The new keyboard is amazing :)

Does the keyboard still retain the shift key styling from 7.1? To this day I'm still confused by whether it's active (white) or not (grey) when it was the other way around in 7.0.x.

Is iOS8 in open beta like Yosemite will be?  Or is this iOS devs only?

The proximity detection between iOS and Yosemite is ground breaking for me.  I've missed so many calls when my phone is in another room charging because my phone is always on silent due to always forgetting to change it after work, having them automatically routed to my Mac will be incredible.

It's a developer-only beta.

Where's the "whatever" option?

Yeah I know.

As a Non iOS or Apple product user I am not really certain what to expect with this. I have just installed it on a 4s here at work to start testing our stuff on it to make sure that everything is still going to work. Other than the Keyboard i am not certain there is much difference for us.

The "Hey, Siri" thing is pretty cool. I'm also glad that I can get Swype on my iPhone; probably my most missed thing from Android.

The coolest thing though is how my iPad and iPhone will now integrate with my MacBook. So very cool. I'm really looking forward to that.

I installed it last night. Non developer mode and love it. Its the small stuff that is cool, stuff that may have been on android for a while, but for us iPhone users its new and refreshing and its like wow I love that.

I noticed that when you delete a picture now, it goes to a deleted folder in your photos app. Don't know how long it stays there, but nice feature to have for those moments when you delete a picture by accident and would really love to get it back!

Does anybody know how to activate those notification centre widgets like eBay? I have the eBay app installed and signed in, but I don't know if it will only work when I'm watching/bidding or whether it's supposed to have a persistent display. It's not in the "Edit" view.

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
