The audacity of taupe: Barack Obama's tan suit creates sartorial stir on social media

The taupe colour of US president Barack Obama's suit has stirred more debate than the weighty topics he raised at an impromptu White House press conference.

Mr Obama's decision to address the media in a breezy, light-coloured summer suit swiftly took centre stage for many, even though he was talking about Russian responsibility for rebel actions in Ukraine and ongoing US air strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq.

"Yes we tan" became the mocking rally cry on social media as Mr Obama gave a statement and then took questions from what some have deemed a horrified press corps.

In 2012 the president told Vanity Fair he only wore "grey or blue suits".

But by breaking that promise - despite his sharp-looking, seasonal attire - Mr Obama inadvertently gave birth to #suitgate, with the snark from America's aspiring fashion critics exploding on Twitter.

"I'm sorry but you can't declare war in a suit like that," guffawed Wall Street Journal reporter @damianpaletta.

"The audacity of taupe," tweeted Jared Keller, a programming director at start-up MicNews.

Other comments were similarly charitable.

"I hope they have a suitable strategy to keep ISIS at beige, I mean what?" tweeted Washington Post blogger Alexandra Petri (@petridishes).

Not everyone was amused. Someone immediately started the parody handle @Obamasuit, but Twitter quickly suspended the account.

Am I missing something?

He's got big hands :o

psshhht.... don't bring him up to other ideas there! he is already busy with golf full time, what if he now starts to play basketball as well?

In the words on Nancy Reagan

"Presidents don't get vacations ? they just get a change of scenery. The job goes with you." The responsibilities, the pressure, the officer with the "nuclear football" ? it's all with a commander-in-chief at all times. No exceptions.

I'm glad we're getting to the important stuff now. And here I was thinking that E! were the only real reporters these days.

Now I really wanna become potus. Playing golf and basketball all day long...

And I bet the kitchen in the white house does awesome meals too. Can't beat a good burger innit?

And the color of his suit is important how?

Protocol. Suit color is an indication of seriousness. This is a casual suit. A darker suit is more proper for a formal situation like dealing with war and peace.

He also got in trouble with both parties for giving his reaction to the beheading of a reporter then helicoptering off to 18 holes of golf. Then yesterday he says there is no policy on ISIS in Syria.

Hey Barry - put away the damned clubs!!

I just can't believe people will complain about something as silly as the color of a suit.

But it shouldn't surprise me really, this ###### has been going on for the last 6 years, why would it be any different now

Oh please, this after George W Bush strolled around with an unbuttoned shirt, jeans and a bomber jacket when discussing the invasion of Iraq with Tony Blair. Unless you're trying to claim the decision making behind the Iraq War was actually informal. You're utterly hypocritical in your criticism of Obama.

Just as Reagan and virtually every other US President has done. If he didn't take time off you'd be arguing he's too stressed to think rationally. It doesn't matter what Obama does you'll find a reason to criticise him, no matter how petty.

There's a lot to criticise Obama for - the colour of his suit isn't one of them.

I guess complaining about his skin colour got old ?

Bingo! All of this birther nonsense, him being a secret Muslim, him being a socialist, communist... blah blah, etc. etc. distracted from criticizing him for things he deserved criticism for. And because of that his supporters didn't have to think critically about him.

I honestly read this article like 3 times on the news site trying to figure what the hell everyone was so excited about. When I simply read the headline I thought Obama walked out in a clown suit to address the press.

How convenient for you that you choose to forget all the crap the Left and the Press gave Bush fot it also, same thing here

As for your other ignorant comment, what other President put more emphasis on his Golf game than real issues? When things happened, all others dropped everything, Barry drops a one liner and continues ignoring reality to play golf, it's all he seems to care about, also admitting there was no plans in place to deal with ISIS was a huge blunder and realistically a lie, I guarantee you there were quite a few people at The Pentagon working up all kinds of plans based on his actions or inactions and ISIS movements, but unlike you and Obama I don't hate the Military so I know they are doing their jobs, unlike Barry

When things happened, all others dropped everything,

No they didn't. Reagan has to be persuaded to end his vacation early when a Korean plane was shot down by a Soviet interceptor.

He also stayed on vacation after a bombing in Beirut in which 241 U.S. servicemen died.

You have to be super careful when you call folks ignorant, lest it is exposed that it is indeed you who are being ignorant.

Must be a slow news day if this is considered news-worthy.

After all, who cares about what's happening elsewhere in the world? Clearly, a tan suit is the worst thing to ever happen to humanity.

I don't have a problem with his suit, but his lack of leadership is pretty disturbing.

If this was a game of StarCraft 2, he'd be losing map control right now while ISIS is spreading creep.

1) Calling him "Barry"

2) Suit colour CAN be an indicator.  I can also be a reaction.

3) You have no idea what was said and to whom while golfing.  It is a cliche, but a lot of ###### get's discussed, arranged and settled during what uninformed public deem to be a leisure activity
