  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know in the ?What?s New? section, recommending gamers your friends frequently play with.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4?s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player?s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player?s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a ? z or z ? a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ?PlayStation? to begin commands, and ?All Commands,? to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including ?Start broadcast,? ?End broadcast,? and ?Find face.?
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ?Add to Library? button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner?s library without downloading it ? saving space on their hard drive.
  • Back Up Data: Data on PS4 can be backed up and resorted using USB storage. This will back up all data for the console, including settings, save data, screenshots, video clips, download data, and more.

Two questions.

1. Why continue to limit the color choices for the background? Why not just allow us to pick from a color picker and the full range of RGB values?

2. Why not give us the ability to pin certain games and apps to the "Content Area"? (and reorganize it) At least give us the ability to choose the cut-off number. Why a hard-coded 15?

Was that two or four? (<-- five?) (<-- six? crap...)

Honestly, compared to the updates Microsoft is putting out for the One, this 2.00 update is super disappointing.

Still hoping that one day, this interface comes to PSVita. However, the update doesn't seem like anything special, especialy keeping the Xbox One update from this month in mind, and last month, and the month prior, and prior, and prior, etc.

Really, I think this is bigger than any single Xbox One update, that isn't the complete list of 2.0 features that's just the NEW stuff announced today.  It also includes the Share Play capability, YouTube support, and themes that were previously announced and possibly more that still hasn't been announced.

I too would prefer they do more, smaller, updates like MS is doing for the Xbox One but apparently they'd rather to large updates every 6 months or so with bug fixes and such in between.  I don't really see how you can say this update isn't anything special though.

I also agree that I prefer the PS4 OS look to the stupid bubbles on the Vita/PlayStationTV.

1. Why continue to limit the color choices for the background? Why not just allow us to pick from a color picker and the full range of RGB values?

Good question. It seems fairly common though in UI customization. I guess they figure most people would be confused by the RGB values and such, maybe they'll add it in the future.

2. Why not give us the ability to pin certain games and apps to the "Content Area"? (and reorganize it) At least give us the ability to choose the cut-off number. Why a hard-coded 15?

I'd prefer 2, rofl. Not sure where they got 15. I'd be perfectly happy if the only things NOT on the main bar were the last digital download game I played and whatever game currently has a disc in the drive (if any).

Well the music in the background seems to be a big request on the XB1 front so maybe Sony put that to the front of the list to release in 2.0.  Is there a timeframe for this update to be released?

I didn't see anything in this latest update but I believe before they said by the end of the year... so within 2 months or so. That may mean in a few hours or December, who knows.

Yeah, something like that. Honestly all I want (and all I use) in the content bar thing is (in order): last-played game, second-to-last-played game, whatever's in the disc drive, Netflix, Library.

I don't see why that's so hard to do.

This is a huge improvement over the previous versions of the Firmware.
But they really need to come out with something special as the XB1 dashboard updates are more frequent, and dare I say, better.

More background colours bigger then .MKV and DLNA support? Surely you jest.  Microsofts updates have **** on Sonys completely and entirely since the get go trying to make up for the bungled launch.

...

A HSL wheel would be better, people actually understand that.

I would argue Share Play is more significant than DLNA. DLNA is something prior gen consoles and even cheap media streaming devices can do and is no doubt coming eventually. Share Play is an entirely new capability. Sure neowin power users want DLNA and media center capabilities but Joe public will likely use share play more if it actually works well.

This is a very welcomed update (bout time Sony)... I won't turn down new features to tinker with...

Whats the fine print on Share Play?  I know that there is a time limit in place or something to that degree, but what else is a no-no???

DLNA support is the reason I don't have a PS4 yet, and I know I'm not the only one!! Come on guys, make this my media hub again!!! PLEEEEZ!!!

the lack of DLNA is my biggest complaint right now. They have all the resources available to improve sharing and social features, but not this...

No the general public won't use share play more, nor do they want it. The comments in your own news link suggest what the public want. Then having a look at the actual shareplay anouncement here

I daresay nearly every comment or 99.9% of comments are asking to forget shareplay and roll out DLNA.

There should be absolutley no reason for my PS3 to still be plugged in and wasting power and space next to my PS4 just so I can stream content to my TV when I go to bed, I'm sorry but a $500 device should be more then capable of it's 8 year older brothers software accomplishments. The saddest part is we still don't have a timeframe for update 2.0 while my X1 receives updates monthly. Should we expect update 3.0 with DLNA support 2 years after launch at this rate?

This isn't a stab at you, just a stab at sonys continual disregard for what the majority of it's consumers actually want.

Wait wait wait wait.....    wasn't one of the huge complaints around here last gen that the PS3 always had too many damn updates while MS did it quarterly?

yeah I remember people saying that.  I think the difference in this case is that both consoles STILL don't have features that the last two had.  The last two consoles didn't come out the box with those features, they were added over the years, but obviously it's fair for people to expect a new product to at a minimum be able to do what the old product could do.

No the general public won't use share play more, nor do they want it. The comments in your own news link suggest what the public want. Then having a look at the actual shareplay anouncement here

Here's a tip if you haven't figured it out yet. Comments on the internet are often not representative of the views of the general public. People who take the time to rant about things in the comments section are almost always the vocal minority. I don't claim to know with any certainty but pointing to a comments section as proof of anything is a joke.

I daresay nearly every comment or 99.9% of comments are asking to forget shareplay and roll out DLNA.

Did you know that 99.72% of statistics were made up on the spot? I can do that too. Less than 50% of prior gen console users used the DLNA capabilities of their console and this generation will likely be the same. Sure there are a bunch of people who REALLY want DLNA, heck I want it, but it's not a major concern of the general console base. Those who are concerned about it, such as you and I, do tend to hang out in web forums such as say Neowin though and post comments on PS blog posts but that doesn't make us the majority.

There should be absolutley no reason for my PS3 to still be plugged in and wasting power and space next to my PS4 just so I can stream content to my TV when I go to bed, I'm sorry but a $500 device should be more then capable of it's 8 year older brothers software accomplishments.

No, there is absolutely no reason for ANY console to be still plugged in and wasting power and space next to your PS4 JUST SO YOU CAN STREAM CONTENT TO YOUR TV WHEN YOU GO TO BED. There are tons of extremely cheap DLNA devices out there that use less power and take up less space that could do that without using ANY big game console at all. It's not like getting DLNA on the PS4 is going to make the PS3 obsolete, there are still PS3 games coming out and PS4 doesn't have backwards compatability so you're probably going to want to keep the PS3 around even once the PS4 has DLNA.

The saddest part is we still don't have a timeframe for update 2.0 while my X1 receives updates monthly. Should we expect update 3.0 with DLNA support 2 years after launch at this rate?

We DO have a timeframe, we don't have a specific date. They have officially said it will be out before the end of the year, that's a timeframe. They haven't said it will be out on November 4th or December 23rd or whatever. They've even said there are still more capabilities in the 2.0 update that have yet to be announced.

This isn't a stab at you, just a stab at sonys continual disregard for what the majority of it's consumers actually want.

There is a difference between what you want, what I want, or even with the vocal commenters on blogs and message boards on the internet want and what "the majority of it's consumers actually want." I suspect Sony is more in tune to what it's consumers actually want than you or I are. I know my priorities are different from theirs, and may very well be much more similar to yours, but I'm keenly aware that my priorities are not reflective of their consumer base as a whole. I'm more of a "power user" than the average console gamer and in fact am a PC gamer first and console gamer second.

    • JBL BAR 800 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar is an amazing deal today by Sayan Sen This Amazon Prime Day 2026 sales so far we have had a couple of nice deals related to sound and audio. First we have the Sennheiser HD 600 at its lowest ever price of just $225. Next we also have the Beats Studio Pro at its lowest price ever at just $150. However perhaps you prefer your gear to sound great on a larger scale, like throughout the room. In that case an all-in-one soundbar system can help and currently JBL's BAR 800 is a great deal for sure as it's up for grabs at just $600 (purchase link under the specs table down below). One thing that should be appreciated a lot about these JBL soundbars is their spec sheet and the frequency response data it provides. The firm is honest about it as JBL confirms the subwoofer is able to go down to 35 Hz at -6dB or F6. This means it should be covering 40Hz and up very well, where most of the bass lies. You miss out on a lot of sub-bass but that is to be expected given the price point and the subwoofer driver size. Speaking of which, it is a 10-inch driver and promises a max output power of 300 watts at 1% THD (total harmonic distortion). JBL also claims the system will provide you with a "True Dolby Atmos" experience. The surround speakers are wireless and battery-powered which means setting them up should be really convenient. The technical specs of the JBL BAR 800 are given in the table below: Specification Value Channel Configuration 5.1.2-channel soundbar system Dolby Atmos Yes, with 2 up-firing drivers Total System Power Output 720 W Soundbar Power Output 340 W Surround Speaker Power Output 2 × 40 W Subwoofer Power Output 300 W Soundbar Drivers 3 × 46×90 mm racetrack drivers, 3 × 20 mm tweeters, 2 × 70 mm up-firing full-range drivers Surround Speaker Drivers 1 × 46×90 mm racetrack driver (each speaker) Subwoofer Driver 10-inch (260 mm) wireless subwoofer Frequency Response 35 Hz – 20 kHz (-6 dB) Audio Inputs Optical, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in, AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music (MRM), USB* HDMI Inputs 1 HDMI video input HDMI Output 1 HDMI eARC output HDCP Version 2.3 HDR Pass-Through HDR10, Dolby Vision Bluetooth Version 5.0 Wi-Fi Version 6, 6E Streaming Services Chromecast built-in, Apple AirPlay, Alexa MRM Get it at the link below: JBL Bar 800-5.1.2-Channel Dolby Atmos soundbar with Detachable Surround Speakers (Black): $599.85 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US with Prime) Prime subscription can be cancelled within three business days. • Microsoft releases PowerToys v0.100.1, fixes a bug that made remapped keys misbehave by Ivan Jenic Microsoft just released PowerToys v0.100.1, a patch update that addresses several stability and behavior issues found in v0.100.0. The v0.100.0 patch was a significant update for PowerToys, as it introduced all sorts of new features and additions, such as a rebuilt Shortcut Guide, a Command Palette Extension Gallery, webcam overlay support in ZoomIt, and more. However, the v0.100.0 version also introduced some bugs and stability issues. And now, Microsoft is addressing these issues in the new patch. The most impactful fix in this release perhaps is in Keyboard Manager, where remapped modifier keys were being delivered as system-key events, causing unexpected behavior in apps. The clearest example of this was Alt-to-Backspace remaps, deleting whole words instead of a single character. So, if you thought there was an issue with your keyboard, Microsoft just confirmed that it was PowerToys. Beyond the Keyboard Manager fix, v0.100.1 also addresses several other issues. It fixes a bug with Power Display that was preventing monitors from waking from standby correctly. Additionally, the new update patches Quick Access crashes on launch, and resolves a Shortcut Guide crash that occurred when switching between sidebar sections. Here’s the full changelog: Color Picker Fixed a bug where the main Color Picker window could appear inside the zoomed-in picker view Command Palette Fixed Run history initialization in AOT builds Fixed a bug where the Performance Monitor dock item could show ??? after restart Fixed the Hibernate command using the Sleep icon Limited the "pin to dock" dialog to displays where the dock is enabled Keyboard Manager Fixed modifier keys remapped to non-modifier keys being delivered as system-key events, which caused unexpected behavior in apps such as Alt-to-Backspace deleting whole words Power Display Fixed a bug where selecting On in the monitor power-state control did not wake a monitor from standby Fixed built-in display detection and brightness control on dual-GPU laptops where the internal panel is driven by the discrete GPU PowerToys Run Fixed VS Code Workspaces discovery after VS Code moved recently opened workspace data to shared storage Quick Access Fixed Quick Access flyout crashes caused by unhandled XAML exceptions during launch or page navigation Shortcut Guide Fixed a crash when navigating between Shortcut Guide sidebar sections Fixed number-key rendering in shortcut manifests and added a Postman shortcut manifest Updated bundled shortcut manifests to use the literal number-key token so number keys render correctly across apps ZoomIt Fixed a race condition in audio initialization for ZoomIt video recording You can download PowerToys v0.100.1 from the official GitHub releases page.
