Warner Bros. Plans New Digital Series Based on Mortal Kombat, Critters, Static Shock

Recommended Posts

Quite a few new series were announced today for development through Blue Ribbon Content, the new official name for the digital production branch of Warner Bros. In addition to several wholly original series, Blue Ribbon announced (via Mashable) plans for projects based on the hit video game "Mortal Kombat," the horror franchise Critters and the DC Comics superhero "Static Shock." The full list of in-development projects reads as follows:

RejecTED: Check out some of the lesser-known and just completely rejected speeches that the world never got to hear--until now--in this original satirical comedy.

Ginger Snaps: Follow a troop of young girls as they backstab, manipulate and sabotage their way through the seedy underworld of the Ginger Snaps and preserve their power and influence at the top of the cookie pile.

Golden Revenge: Two adorable house pet--a cat and dog--love their life with their owner. His new wife? Not so much. After receiving an "it's me or the pets" ultimatum, the husband takes the cat and dog deep into the forest and leaves them behind. Now it's up to the pets to find their way across the country - to exact their revenge!

Ouroboros: Original horror/thriller from producer Akiva Goldsman (executive producer of the Paranormal Activity franchise) follows two police officers over the course of one night in a remote part of Wisconsin as they are overwhelmed by a series of mysterious attacks.

Static Shock: Writer/producer/director Reginald Hudlin leads the creative team behind a live-action adaptation of Static Shock, featuring the super hero Static, aka Virgil Ovid Hawkins. Based on the Static comic published by DC Comics.

Critters: Blue Ribbon revisits the world of the legendary New Line Cinema cult classic movie franchise, as a new batch of alien pests descends upon the planet in this new digital series written by Michael Jelenic & Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go!).

Blue Ribbon is also moving forward with series orders on three new shows:

Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles (Machinima): Animated shortform series from Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett (producers of the legendary Batman: The Animated Series) will debut on Machinima in 2015. Based on Justice League: Gods & Monsters, an original animated film that will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment later in 2015.

Untitled Mortal Kombat Series (distributed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment): An all-new series that showcases some of the franchise's most storied characters, while introducing a new generation of fighters.

Play It Again, Dick (CW Seed): Co-written and executive produced by Veronica Mars creator/executive producer Rob Thomas for CW Seed, the digital-only studio of The CW Television Network. Play It Again, Dick stars Ryan Hansen as himself as he pleads with former Veronica Mars castmates and friends to help him get his character, Dick Casablancas, a spinoff.

I am all for new mortal kombat series (huge fan since i was a kid, and i am SO glad they are taking it in the right direction now - 9 was great, X looks AMAZING)

the recent web series were cool, and i feel can finally forget how bad older movies and games were, and pretend Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was the last game before 2011 reboot :)

RejecTED  looks interesting too :)

Jaden Smith Rumored For Static Shock

Karate Kid and After Earth star Jaden Smith is being considered to star in the upcoming, live-action Static Shock digital series for Warner Bros., according to Flickering Myth.

The series, announced this week, is set to be produced by comic writer and Django Unchained producer Reginald Hudlin.

The article notes that Smith's parents are already developing a bit of a working relationship with Warner Bros., now that Jada Pinkett Smith is a series regular on Gotham and Will Smith is in negotiations for Suicide Squad.

Static Shock features the character Static, originally created in 1993 by Dwayne McDuffie, Robert L. Washington III, and John Paul Leon for Milestone Comics, the short-lived DC Comics imprint meant to increase representation of African-American creators and characters.

Static, whose real name is Virgil Hawkins, possesses electricity-based powers.

The character is most recognized for the Static Shock animated series that aired originally on Kids WB, and was part of the shared DC Animated Universe. Following the events of Final Crisis in 2009, Static ? and the other characters from Milestone?s ?Dakotaverse? ? were introduced into the DC Comics universe, with Static joining the Teen Titans in a series from Felicia D. Henderson of Fringe and Gossip Girl fame.

Following the New 52 reboot three years ago, Static had a short-lived (8-issue) solo series that launched with the publisher's first wave of new comics.

    • EA reached out to our reporter that mainly does gaming content and reviewed loads of other games, why would this be shocking to anyone? I admit maybe we were considered this time around because of the extra coverage UFC was getting and they wanted a broader audience for this release? IDK. I can tell you that we aren't paid to do the reviews, the fun part of it is (mostly) being able to keep what we review and giving an honest opinion on what we're reviewing.
