LG G3 root and rom questions

Recommended Posts

Hey Neowinian LG G3 owners,

Have any of you rooted and/or installed a custom rom for the LG G3, if so, did you find any improvement on battery life, general performance or any other area of the phone.

I'm asking, because I've never rooted/custom rom'd, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking about it, after I read this:

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Outstanding-custom-Android-ROMs-for-the-LG-G3_id64052

I know XDA is the place to go, but might as well ask here first and see if anyone pops up.

Did not notice this right away. You're one of those who responded when I inquired about the g3 :p

Anyway, I rooted mine after using it for about 2 weeks. Definitely worth it.

If you plan to just stay rooted or simply stay in Kitkat, look into Xposed. Lots of tweaks you can do, both for eye candy and functionality. Battery life can be improved due to Greenify (works for non-root but better if rooted, even better with Xposed) and Amplify (limit the wakelocks).

Rooting is easy. I used PurpleDrake because StumpRoot did not work.

As for custom roms, there a lot for my device (d855 international), both AOSP and Stock-based. If you're from the US, I don't think Lollipop stock-based supports those devices yet but there are AOSP-based roms and Kitkat roms that are in XDA. I recommend CloudyG3 or AndroidNow HD if you go for stock-based but I've read ChupaChups was also good. I used it for a few days but my battery life got worse so I switched. I really can't recommend AOSP-based roms. I haven't tried any because I love the camera which will not be the same if AOSP-based rom was used

Right now I'm using AndroidNow HD 8.0. This coupled with Greenify (free) as well as freezing the remaining apps using Titanium Backup Pro, I'm getting around 5-6 hours of Screen-On time.

I want to say some roms are carrier specific on that particular phone, but i cant fully remember.

For roms, I always go with the 4 that actual provide development, by writing code and creating features. I tend to stay away from roms that Kang, clump a bunch of cherry picks together and call it a rom. Its more of a principle to me though because the community only benefits from actual development. I think Slim Team, Omni, ParanoidAndroid, and CM offer just that, real development.

Anyways enough of my rant about that. What carrier are you on?

I took a quick look at XDA and the roms are carrier specific it looks like, kernels might not be but it seems they have seperate sections for carrier roms for that phone.

i think this post from XDA should get you to the right places, it seems roms arent carrier specific? its confusing for this phone to me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2772658

I have experience with the LG G3 [LS990]

I prefer rooting and custom recoveries because it gives me options. I can try a custom stock rom or a AOSP based rom.

I can remove bloatware using root and clean up the system files.

I've rooted mine, but no custom roms. I'm on Android 4.4.2 still, waiting impatiently for Lollipop.

Battery seems fine to me, absolutely love my LG G3. Best phone out there anyways, by far.

D855 already has lollipop :/

I did? What did I say :p:laugh:

I'm a D855 as well, think i'll be picking you brain a little bit if you don't mind... the dumbass part of it all is, I upgraded OTA to lollipop :/ and i've been reading makes things just a big more difficult.

So you are on a d855 on kit kat based AndroidNow?

Not carried bound, bought the international unlocked version D855.

Aye, one of the main reasons I want to root is to remove lg app world and dumbass mcaffee

Friggin lollipop update has me going crazy.

1. Alarm doesn't  has no sound when in do not disturb

2. plug and pop goes crazy with specific cables.

Sorry guys, i've never rooted anything before, basically I need a "dummies guide to rooting", eg what would be my first step?

Sorry for being delayed here. I only lurk on Neowin during the weekend nowadays. :p

I'm on AndroidNow 8.3 which is Lollipop-based. Got mine with Kitkat preinstalled. Rooting was easy with PurpleDrake. For your case, I've read you need to flash the stock Kitkat firmware using the LG Flash Tool. As much as I'd like to help, I haven't really tried that :D

But once you're back to Kitkat, here's how you can root and install TWRP:

For rooting:

- What you need: Enable 'USB Debugging' by going to Settings->About Phone->Software Info-> then repeatedly tapping 'Build number' until you enable Developer Options.

- Go back to Settings and you'll now see 'Developer Options' there. Tap that and enable USB Debugging.

- Drivers for D855 from here

- PurpleDrake Lite from here

Then just follow the instructions from this video.

(Side note: You can also adjust animation speed in the Developer Options as well It's on 'Transition animation scale', 'Animator duration scale', and 'Window Animation scale'. Mine is set to 0.5x)

For installing TWRP:

What you need: Flashify

Download it from this page. You can then follow instructions from here (step-by-step guide with pics) but you can go straight to Step 3 (the first 2 steps are for downloading which we already did and the one I provided you is better as it can backup the modem as well).

Sorry if I can't provide help in downgrading. I've read a couple of instructions from reddit/xda but I don't really want to provide steps I haven't tried myself.

    • After enabling it in about:config, customize, density, compact; the toolbar/address bar gets smaller vertically. I enabled Nova, I notice the tab bar/title bar is a bit larger vertically now? Everything always becomes a waste of space.
    • Microsoft's Copilot Cowork now generally available with usage-based billing by Pradeep Viswanathan Back in March, Microsoft first revealed Copilot Cowork, a new agentic AI experience in Microsoft 365 Copilot through which users can assign tasks to AI to complete in the background. After testing the service with a limited set of customers in Research Preview for a few weeks, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork to customers in the Frontier program on March 30. Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork worldwide for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers. The company also highlighted that Cowork became the fastest-growing feature in the history of its Frontier program. Unlike regular Copilot Chat, Copilot Cowork can run complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks from start to finish in the cloud by using organizational context through Work IQ. When compared to Claude Cowork, Microsoft claims that Copilot Cowork will be 30% to 40% cheaper on average with its Microsoft 365 connector. For now, Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. However, Frontier customers can now use GPT-5.5. Microsoft also announced Cowork 1, a secure fine-tuned model coming in the next few weeks, which is designed to handle everyday Copilot tasks at a lower cost. To access Copilot Cowork, a Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription is required. Usage is billed separately through Copilot Credits, based on model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime. Pay-as-you-go pricing is set at $0.01 per Copilot Credit. To offer IT teams full control over usage costs, Microsoft provides spending limits, usage alerts, user-level controls, reporting, and prepaid usage plans for organizations. Usage-based billing begins today. However, Frontier customers who used Cowork between March 30 and June 16 will not be billed until July 1, 2026. The Microsoft 365 Copilot app now includes a toggle to enter the full Cowork experience. Microsoft is also adding partner plugins, with Enosix, Harvey, LSEG, Miro, monday.com, Moody’s, Morningstar, S&P Global Energy, and TeamsMaestro available now. Adobe, Atlassian, Box, Canva, Databricks, and others are coming soon.
