You can still get patches. Not that it matters much any more as most malware and other nasties are targeting Windows Vista/7/8 these days. XP is actually a lot safer than the newer versions.

Windows 7. I have 3 years old hardware inside, maximum compatibility with software so it stays there as the main OS until I completely upgrade to newer hardware.

Windows 10 will ready my computer when Broadwell and next gen Maxwell arrive.

I'm running 8.1, but come Jan 20 I'll be on 10 on all my computers, and phone if possible.

Windows XP has reached End of Life on April 8. How can you still get patches?

I got an Intel Inspiron 6000 laptop from the XP era to work with windows 10 :D even the wireless worked as well...

I am not going to use a pre-release version of Windows to do my homework.

 

I highly doubt that "Windows 10 crashed" is a valid excuse for not turning in my homework.

 

It's a more believable excuse than "My dog ate it"! :woot:

Windows 8.1 with Start8 and Modern Mix until a proper release of 10. Or at least an RC release. Since the return of the start menu in 10 I have been distancing myself from the Start crap in 8. Sold 4 copies of Start 8 and Modern Mix myself to friends and families that got new PCs in 2014. Although I recently heard it is no longer compatible since Update 1??? I need to go figure that out.

Windows Embedded POS edition or something is essentially Windows XP and it is supported until 2019.

 

Windows Embedded POS, the connotations for that that product acronym are now a lot more relevant today.

Windows Embedded POS. POS= Point of Sale? We used these  cash registers back at old Walter Reed Army Medical center circe 2004 that used an embedded Windows OS. can't do much on it. I mean as a consumer. Are you a busniess owner? sorry I don't mean to be poking around in your business.

      One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.

      I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.

      AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.

      Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
