After last week's keynote we have a much clearer vision of where Windows 10 is headed. And with the upgrade being free there is no financial obstacle preventing anyone from upgrading.

 

Are you going to upgrade to Windows 10? If not, what stops you from doing it? Comment below.

Yep, from a mix of 7 and 8.1. When it's released that is and once I'm sure everything I rely on is 100% working. Looking very much like the release that 8 should have been. Between that, new Office, new Visual Studio, etc etc.. got a lot of goodies to update this year. Curious to see what the Server versions bring as well, got a couple 2008R2's that are getting a bit stale.

Not right away, no.  Want to do some testing with apps to make sure there are no problems running what I need to run.  Also want to make sure drivers are available.  Then I want to test the in place upgrade process to see if that has gotten any better.  Didnt have a chance to test with Win8.  I will have it running on a test system most likely but will not update my main system right away.

 

Running Win7/Win8 at home.

so is upgrade from 7 going to be free?  I seemed to have missed the cost info..  Looking now.

 

edit:  Seems so, for a year after the release..  So far I like what I have seen in the tech preview, most likely this will be an update I will do.  But wont really know for sure until after the final, etc.

Yes, for the first year it's going to be free to upgrade from 7 and up. Pretty sure they're going to extend the deal after the first year is over.

Yep,on all business and pleasure machines. 

Every new version brings a swathe of new features, bug fixes, security updates and things to play with. You're silly if you don't upgrade.

I'm missing the "Windows 10" option in the second question.

It's under 'other Windows version' - I wanted to keep the main options for released Windows versions.

I don't think I'll be upgrading. I have Windows 8 and I miss the start menu, but I've got over it and I don't think it's worth the trouble, especially since my desktop now works perfectly and I can reset it to factory state whenever I want to. Plus I'm not very excited about Windows 10.

I'll see where they;re going with Start before deciding. If we're stuck with just a resizable Menu like the latest build, I'm staying on 8.1.

 

The Screen, and more accurately the move away from the Start Menu was the biggest benefit of 8 for me, and I don't want to be stuck with a Start Menu again.

Not unless they fix the UI for Tablets

 

Right now Win 10 is horrible on my Surface and would be even worse on my Acer W4 8 inch Tablet

 

After hearing what they've said and pinging a few Ms reps on Twitter it seems they are going to ignore Tablet users and cater to the desktop crows from now on.

 

Win 10 on Tablets is like using Win 7 on a Tablet it is a bad experience.

How exactly will the upgrade work? Do I have to upgrade my installation or can I take the key and do a fresh install with it? I've never been a fan of the upgrade process (I prefer a completely clean system, as all my important documents are kept on non-primary drives anyway).

 

If I can fresh install using the key (assuming they give you a key) then I'll move onto Win10, otherwise I'll probably keep running 7.
