Useless conversation about absolutely nothing.

Does anyone read the dev blogs at all?

Does anyone here actually know or care why the current Start Menu is a XAML implementation as opposed to the older one in the previous build?!

... or that it can still be re enabled?!

The ignorance here is mind blowing.

I noticed my version went from 9726 yesterday to 9926 today. I like cortana. gimmicky. yet useful. quite useful for mornings before the kids go to school for deciding if they need jackets. Reno is awfully cold right now. low 20's upper teens lately.

Well, I am sorry..  if you don't like that, you might want to go back to Windows 8 for the time being.

Or just wait until third party developers will create better way to add all apps...   just like they did in the past versions of Windows since '95.

You might want to replace the menu with classic shell if you want.

I'm back in 8.1.1 right now. 10 is a VM. And if I don't make my displeasure over the lack of choice known, how is MS supposed to know that some people want a proper Start Screen? I support the menu coming back for others, but I don't want to use it myself.

And Classic Shell won't help - I don't like any version of the menu! I thought it stunk in 1995, and my opinion never changed. The killer feature of 8 for me was the Screen, a welcome change after 17 years of a barely-usable menu design.

I haven't however, I like how it scrolls down so as to NOT eat up screen space.

This is interesting, please bear with me. I installed Ghost Recon advanced warfighter in windows 8/8.1 and my saved maps in the work folder at " C:\Users\Christopher\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter\custom_levels\work_temp\1\data\levels\custom_levels\garbanzo beans. inside are my world.xml, units.xml and zones.xml files.

it didn't work in Windows 8/8.1 but now works in 10, go figure. But this is great news.

as for modern UI people/fans, I noticed that the install to 9726 installed my system to be strictly desktop centric. which bodes well for both camps. which is what I had hoped for all along. the open true connection between the two is the link between both UI's via the start menu. so I think both camps can find a happy medium and everyone can be happy. I have to say AND admit, in your viewing I was wrong with Windows 10. there are some strong but also subtle changes that I can deal with. listen, I'm writing a report on ghost reconners who want to know if in windows 10, they can play the 2001 version of Ghost Recon as there are still loyal gamers. I'll get back to you guys later. thanks for reading my post here.

That's not the Start Screen - that's the Menu made full-screen. I want the intelligent use of space 8 gave us, not All Apps crammed in the corner! We don't have 640x480 screens anymore, so economy of space - packing everything in like sardines - is completely unnecessary!

huh , what's the difference between a full screen start menu and a start screen? your being pedantic now. only difference I see from windows 8 is that there is a little task bar on the left

Not particularly. I don't care about the Menu at all. For my purposes I couldn't care less if it ever came back - I don't want it!

It's the Start Screen I want! It was the first decent launcher I'd seen since Program Manager was retired. The ability to re-enable the earlier version of the Menu is absolutely useless to me.

And that's the problem. I don't want the list, and I certainly don't want All Apps crammed into that sidebar like sardines. We have huge screens these days - why not USE that? Shoving everything into a corner is a total waste of space! Let me turn that 7-style element off, and use the whole screen for All Apps like in 8.x!

but it's early days yet, as you can see that part on the left can't be configured at all at the moment, they're obviously gonna change it and will probably let you remove it altogether.  Oh, I get what you mean by the all apps bit, I can see how you'd find that annoying if you like windows 8's way

I'm glad the old style start menu is back though hooray, I hated that damn start screen.

I agree with +DConnel, the all apps list is a pain to work with at the moment.

Has anyone managed to get RSAT working in build 9926? (or are we stuck waiting for an updated release?)

Choice is a good thing. I'm glad you're getting yours and I hope the feedback I've given will help me get mine.

I initially had that image with many LEDs as the lock screen background, but I switched from it to a custom one. Then, I selected  " Windows Default"  again, and the image changed once more. My question is: does this change daily, or can it be customized in some other way? I certainly can't see it anywhere...

oh no the start menu at the moment is far from perfect, like I said, early days.  If it's like this come release day we can both complain together :p

Over some beers? Sounds good.

But if the final release looks like this I'll likely stay on 8.1.1 for a while

Currently, the new store is a mess. It scrolls both vertically AND horizontally. So currently with a mouse it is difficult to use.

Some WinRT APIs can now "officially" be used from desktop apps. Hadn't noticed this before. I still don't like that so many APIs are not documented with examples, and you have to smack your head against the wall every time something is missing from WinRT. Things as simple as TextBox.Clear() are missing, that you have to do silly things like TextBox.Text = String.Empty; and afterwards handle the focus so that the stupid keyboard doesn't show up again. Dammit.

EDIT: "X API / control is currently not available. We may add it in a future version." FFFFFUUUUU!

I want my start screen back!

(On my tablet, as it was in Windows 8.1).

I loved:

- The charms bar swipe from left, and the full screen start screen.

- The swipe down to close an app

- Metro Internet Explorer (swipe to go back)

- Auto full screen Metro apps

On a tablet, 8.1 was approaching total ease of use. Sad that they chose to abandon this paradigm.

But I guess the majority vote counts. I doubt these abilities will be back.

Build 9926 is unusable on a tablet (and mine has an 11.6 inch screen)

We'll see what happens in future builds, I guess, but it seems as though Microsoft is overcompensating for desktop users.

    • It won't perform hugely better than the 3080 unless you're VRAM limited in games. Have you tried putting new thermal pads on them 3080 and giving it a good clean to see if you can regain your temps and overclock?
    • Windows 95 offered the ability to add and edit the right click menus, on a per file type basis. This feature seems to be missing in the new file explorer. Are they bringing it back as a "new" feature?
    • It's nearly time to replace my aging Founders Edition 3080, it doesn't OC as nicely as it used to and it's running around 10c warmer than it did when I first bought it.  I don't have budget for much more than what I spent on the 3080 and locally, that means the best GPU I can manage is a 9070XT. On this basis I have a few questions: 1. At present I don't use ray tracing, if this was to change, would this GPU be an issue? 2. How does it compare on a performance basis? 3. Are the drivers worse or better than those for nVidia? 4. Linux support, is it there? 5. Anything else I should be aware of if I were to make this change? 6. Is it a good idea or shall I try and keep the 3080 a little longer.
    • What OS is that? It looks a bit like Mac OS but the command line suggests it isn't, either way I like it!
