Smoothing Out Cracked Ink Photo

I've got a photo of my uncle's dad riding a horse, and he's wondering if there's any way it can be restored.  I've corrected the colors which was easy enough, or gotten it pretty close anyway, but the ink is thoroughly cracked.  I could use the clone tool to smooth out the horse since it's solid white, but it would take me forever to manually smooth them all out, and I'm not sure the results would be that much of an improvement.  I've added the photo to my Dropbox, do you guys know of any automated tool in Gimp (or other software available for Ubuntu) that would make it a little less time consuming to try and smooth out the cracks in the ink?

Tough but. You may want to try Content Aware Healing in CS5.
