got a couple suggestions for your next addition -

*check out this link regarding application of multiple hotfixes to XP!!!! Unchained fixes applied back-to-back without reboots can cause major havoc to the system. Microsoft QChain KB

*Not sure if this has been found yet, but turning off Simple File Sharing is a must.

*Found a reg tweak for a faster shutdown.

I have attached a file that has all the requirements if anyone is interested.

Props to all involved - cpugeniusmv, shifty, etc...(Awesome project here!) :D

**I realize this should probably be part of the main autopatcher topic, but there are so many to choose from, so I thought the "suggestions" area would suffice.

paratrupr,

thanks for the hook up!! i will definately look into those suggestions and see if it will

fit in w/ the average Neowin. the hardest part about this project is finding *common*

tweaks and settings that fits everyone.

i like the quick shutdown and the mutli hotfix - no reboot thing is good too, but thats for

the APXP team to worry about. since APXP takes care of hotfixes and what not,

i decieded to make our project help deploy APXP for re-installs of windows

after working on it for the last 2 months, i have come to appriciate APXP and helping

all in our Neowin Community make their lives easier by simplifiying the dreaded

*Re=install*!!

UPDATE

The modular batch files are finished and need some testing (beta testers PM me)

I have 1 box that needs can use a re-install of XP ASAP, but I need others to test out other

things.

The driver removal process is only for the HARDCORE testers. You must have an understanding

of how drivers work and know your system like the back of your hand.

I can include the driver removal pack if you need it.

Also removal of certain default apps can be removed too, like MSN messenger, calc, paint, IE6.

only remove these if needed. basically, if you remove them they will be deleted off the install CD

so if your system requires certain apps like IE6 then other programs will not work like MyEI2

(MyIE2 requires IE6 to be installed)

Since a lot of people have been emailing me on the next release here is just

the WINNT.SIF creator file. <<it is still a beta, so it may not work all the way>>

this is for people that need to have just winnt.sif created. the rest of the release will follow

and be posted hopefully by wednesday night (late).

this will be an open beta so please post any fixes or errors you find.

Just save the file to a folder and run the batch. it will create a XPCD folder

and i386, nested in the XPCD. the winnt.sif file will be saved in the i386.

you can edit the batch file accordingly, but only if you know you what are doing.

once you create the file just save it and overwrite (backup the oringinal just in case)

it into your real i386 folder and burn the CD.

<<Version 1.0 SLIPXP Download Link>>

THis will help those who already have the first release.

thanks for all your patience and we hope to hammer this out and ready for download soon!!!

Hi,

I found on MSFN this small utility which "create a bootable ISO of Windows XP files" very usefull and want to share it.

In fact there is no need of any burner to create a boot ISO CD.

Open the redme file befor using.

BTW, when the new rehash will be ready, we grow impatient.

Cheers

sorry for the delays... I been sick with the flu for the last 2 days and im not getting better soon.

Ive tried coding, but with a runny nose, eyes, ears, butt and other things its hard to concentrate.

In the mean time though, i get to relax next to my new projector and do all this on a 74 inch screen!!!

Hi Shifty!!

What you doing here is just great., especially since you can basicly add everthing you want, e.g. driver, under $OEM$\$1.

Since I'm german I prefer a german desktop, so I copied the MUI under $OEM$\$1\WXP_MUI and added the command line after the autopatcher is finished but it doesn't work. The switches itself configures german as the default language for the default user. Please see below. Do you guys have any suggestion.

Hello

I have just come back from a trip away from my computer. To find it has been stolen, it had all my source code on and although a few friends have sent me back the beta versions of my slipsteam app, they are all compiled versions.

I could start all over again, but instead I have mailed Shifty and hope he will take me onboard on his project.

Sorry if you were waiting to test my app.

HotBlack, i got your email...

Sorry for the delays... I have been battling a re-occuring flu, massive overtime @ work, heading to the recording studio,

playing show after show every other day, band practice and setting up

a tour for mid-end of March... its been exhausting 3 weeks!!

Dont worry folks, i havent forgotten about you. I plan on tackling some more coding this weekend.

also i have started a new bonus feature that is so secret not even cpugeniusmv knows about it!!

it will be in the guide and then posted here on neowin!!

This was probably already covered, so my apologies before hand...

1) Copying the i386 folder to the HD and modifying the registry = for me, I prefer to have a copy of the i386 folder on the HD so that I am not prompted for the CD

2) With regards to Office = I also copy the Office CD onto the HD so that when additional user accounts are created (such as Power Users), they will be able to run Office apps without that damned "Error 1706" prompt (this requires that certain registry key permissions be reset to allow for Power Users to access them)

TIA

  • 2 weeks later...

>>nw_raptor

"a bit busy" is an understatement!!

i did so much overtime in the last 5 weeks that i got a free paid day off today!!

now i have 2 full days to get back in the jungle and get this working.

so far i have finished all but 3 modular batch files.

the winnt.sif creator one has been an ever evolving batch file...

everyweek im add more and more to it to make it better and more customizable.

also im working on custom driver installs and adding more and more un-attended app installations.

i think the biggest accomplishment has been the ability to back up a favorite list for IE to be transfered to a new install!!

since i just got my new WD 250GB special edition, this will be the perfect opportunity to start messing w/ the new installs.

after all is good im going to have to write a html based guide/tutorial which i fear will take far longer than i expect.

raptor, thanks for understanding my schedule, its been very taxing the last 2 months!!

    • An actual cosmic "Eye of Sauron" had been looking straight at us all along by Sayan Sen Image by Kovin P. Vasquez via Pexels | Not representative An international team of researchers has solved a long-standing mystery surrounding a distant blazar known as PKS 1424+240, helping explain why it produces some of the brightest high-energy gamma rays and cosmic neutrinos ever observed despite appearing to have a relatively slow-moving jet. The findings were published on June 6 in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The study addresses a broader challenge in astrophysics: understanding how extreme cosmic objects accelerate particles to very high energies and produce very high-energy (VHE) photons and neutrinos. PKS 1424+240 is located billions of light-years from Earth. It has attracted attention for years because it is both a powerful source of VHE gamma rays and the brightest known neutrino-emitting blazar in the sky, according to observations by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. It is also associated with one of the strongest peaks in IceCube's nine-year neutrino sky map A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole that pulls in surrounding matter and launches jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. What makes blazars unique is their orientation. One of their jets points almost directly toward Earth, making them appear exceptionally bright across the electromagnetic spectrum and allowing scientists to study some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe. The scientists exclaimed it's like the 'Eye of Sauron' in deep space. Usually, the brightest gamma-ray-emitting blazars are expected to have jets that appear to move very quickly. However, radio observations of PKS 1424+240 suggested that its jet was moving much more slowly, creating a contradiction that became part of a long-running problem known as the "Doppler factor crisis." To investigate, researchers analyzed 15 years of observations from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), a network of 10 radio antennas spread across the continental United States, Hawaii and St. Croix. Using a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), astronomers combine signals from widely separated radio telescopes to create a virtual Earth-sized telescope capable of revealing extremely fine details. The team combined 42 polarization-sensitive radio images collected between 2009 and 2025, creating a much deeper and more detailed view of the jet than had previously been possible. The observations were carried out as part of MOJAVE (Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments), a long-running program that studies the brightness, polarization and magnetic field structures of jets produced by active galaxies. The project aims to better understand how activity near supermassive black holes is linked to high-energy radiation and neutrino emission. “When we reconstructed the image, it looked absolutely stunning,” said Yuri Kovalev, lead author of the study and Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded MuSES project at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “We have never seen anything quite like it — a near-perfect toroidal magnetic field with a jet, pointing straight at us.” The image revealed an unusual geometry. The researchers found that Earth lies almost directly in line with the jet, with a viewing angle of less than 0.6 degrees. In simple terms, astronomers are looking almost straight down the jet. This turned out to be the key to the mystery. Because the jet is aimed almost directly at Earth, a relativistic effect called Doppler boosting dramatically increases its apparent brightness. The study found that this effect boosts the emission by a factor of about 30 while also making the jet appear slower than it actually is. “This alignment causes a boost in brightness by a factor of 30 or more,” said Jack Livingston, a co-author at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy. “At the same time, the jet appears to move slowly due to projection effects — a classic optical illusion.” The nearly head-on view also gave scientists a rare look at the jet's magnetic field. Using polarized radio signals, they detected a clear toroidal, or doughnut-shaped, magnetic field component. The observations suggest the jet carries an electric current and that its magnetic field helps launch, shape and stabilize the flow of plasma. Researchers believe this magnetic structure may also play a key role in accelerating particles to energies high enough to produce both gamma rays and neutrinos. “Solving this puzzle confirms that active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes are not only powerful accelerators of electrons, but also of protons — the origin of the observed high-energy neutrinos,” Kovalev said. The research was conducted under the MuSES (Multi-messenger Studies of Energetic Sources) project, which investigates how active galactic nuclei accelerate particles and generate different cosmic signals, including light and neutrinos. Scientists say understanding how protons are accelerated and linked to neutrino production remains one of the major unanswered questions in astrophysics. The findings help explain why some blazars can appear to have slow jets while still producing extremely bright high-energy emissions. More broadly, the study strengthens the link between relativistic jets, magnetic fields, gamma rays and high-energy neutrinos. Researchers say the results provide new clues about how some of the Universe's most powerful natural particle accelerators work and offer important insights for multimessenger astronomy, which combines different types of cosmic signals to study extreme events in space.
