Aw crap! Lewis has been hit with a 5-place grid penalty in China for a gearbox change. He really needs to break Rosberg's winning streak this race!

No, he doesn't  He needs to go crash some more cars and wear stupid clothes. He won it a couple of times on the bounce and next time is always the toughest.

Personally I'm hoping Ferrari will be able to finally challenge Mercedes for the win this weekend, without being hampered by technical issues or strategy blunders.

Put your faith in Ferrari this time around; god knows which one, though.

You are sending mixed messages here. You say that you can afford it, believe that you are not entitled to your sport of choice for free and highlight it as being something that is near and dear to your heart, yet you are not willing to part with your hard-earned sums for the pleasure. Sounds like you are just bitter about free stuff that you like a lot going away and this is your initial reaction.

Everyone wants more money: the drivers, the teams, the track circuits, the investors, etc. So long as there are parties willing to pay increasing sums, that spiral is going to continue its course.

Prices go up for most things with time due to inflation and other factors. Sure, Sky is not about to complain about that, but it's still how the cookie crumbles.

Only around half of the money paid to F1 goes to the teams in prize money, the rest of it goes directly into the pockets of Bernie himself. People in the UK have to pay a license fee to watch the BBC, and sure it's going to annoy people when it's taken away from them because they're getting a reduction in value for the money they're having to pay.

The team bosses are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They basically have to agree to the aggregate format, otherwise they will be seen to be the ones to blame for the elimination format staying. This whole thing is just one/two men wanting to satisfy their own egos - screw everyone else.

Jean Todt seems more interested in raising his own profile than helping F1 tbh

Can't see it happening. If what's being said is true about the design deficiencies in their turbo, they're going to suffer at a power track like Shanghai.

Bernie and shareholders. F1 is in the entertainment business, so it is only fair that shareholders receive dividends on their investments.

As for the license fee part, what you say makes no sense. You have to pay a license fee whether you watch BBC or not and BBC is not showing the races any more. However, BBC will still be providing radio broadcasts that the license fee covers. It is Channel 4's decision whether or not they want to make the investment and commitment to show F1 on FTA TV. You should write to them to make your position known. It is no more annoying that those with a Sky sub who do not watch BBC are still forced to pay for a TV license. There is only so much you can get from the TV license or advertising budget to pay for certain programming. Harsh, but it does reflect reality.

F1 shareholders do receive enormous dividends on their stock already. Being in the entertainment business is pretty useless if you shrink your audience by sizeable margins. The brands that invest in F1 teams don't get dividends from the F1 pot, they rely on viewers and they're going to scale back their involvement if viewer numbers continue to dip (which frankly is going to happen when the sport is solely on pay TV). Paying money for radio broadcasts is nigh on useless because they don't provide a fraction of the entertainment that actually watching the sport does. I don't really believe the problem is with Channel 4, I believe it's with Bernie being a generally greedy SOB.

F1 was on FTA TV for decades, and it was never unsustainable. The problem isn't with the fans, it's the disgusting greed of the people in charge.

You don't pay money for radio broadcasts. You can listen to radio for free without needing a radio silence (unlike in some distant past).

Bottom line: everyone wants more money, for better or for worse. Public broadcasters can only stump up so much. If you are as right as you believe you are, all parties concerned will find out the hard way and F1 will return to FTA TV. Time will tell.

Here's something interesting to spark a debate: a researcher at the University of Sheffield has used statistical analysis to try and rank the greatest F1 drivers of all time with the teams and cars taken out of the equation. https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/news/nr/greatest-formula-one-driver-ever-1.567358

In a nutshell...

Quote
  • Teams matter about six times more than drivers when it comes to success in F1.
  • About two-thirds of the team effect is consistent over time, with the rest caused by teams changing year-on-year.
  • Team effects have increased over time, but appear to be smaller on street circuits, where the driver’s skill plays a greater role.

The full study is behind a paywall, but here's the top 50 (cheers, WTF1)...

Quite honestly I'd gotten caught up in enjoyment of the sport and lost sight of the fact that really all anyone in life should care about is that we hold onto our capitalist integrity so everyone keeps making truckloads of profit.

Hey, I want F1 on FTA TV as much as the next guy, but it's sports + business now, so you gotta roll with the punches. That being said, some people who want F1 on FTA TV probably also waste more money each month than it would take to get a Sky/NowTV sub to watch way more sports than just F1.

Good race overall.

On a personal note, either Rosberg's had PR lessons or I've warmed up to him for some reason :s

I think he's had some PR lessons and also he's not as moody now he's winning.

Good race if a bit too messy, might have been better live but with highlight it was a tad hard to keep track of everyone and the changing positions.

Good video from FOM there regarding the Vettel/Kvyat incident. The more I watch it, the more I feel Kvyat did nothing wrong.

I know this is a formula-E related post and I've popped it there already, but anyone interested in F1 will probably also enjoy this.

    • Windows 95 offered the ability to add and edit the right click menus, on a per file type basis. This feature seems to be missing in the new file explorer. Are they bringing it back as a "new" feature?
    • It's nearly time to replace my aging Founders Edition 3080, it doesn't OC as nicely as it used to and it's running around 10c warmer than it did when I first bought it.  I don't have budget for much more than what I spent on the 3080 and locally, that means the best GPU I can manage is a 9070XT. On this basis I have a few questions: 1. At present I don't use ray tracing, if this was to change, would this GPU be an issue? 2. How does it compare on a performance basis? 3. Are the drivers worse or better than those for nVidia? 4. Linux support, is it there? 5. Anything else I should be aware of if I were to make this change? 6. Is it a good idea or shall I try and keep the 3080 a little longer.
    • What OS is that? It looks a bit like Mac OS but the command line suggests it isn't, either way I like it!
    • Outlook classic is inherently better than new outlook, for a number of reasons. That said, if the only reason people need office is to read email, they should just use thunderbird.
    • Windows 11 is a big thumbs down from me. I used for a period of a few days while it was in insider and windows 10 was the main OS, and realised it wasn't for me. I am still waiting for Windows to be tolerable again, a shame as at one point I was very pro Microsoft.
