Questions about moving to Android

Hi everyone.  Our organization is currently on Windows Phone, however have lost faith in the platform and are no longer willing to invest resources in its adoption.

 

As such, we are looking at alternatives, and feel that Android is more likely the best fit for us.  I did have a few questions however if everyone wouldn't mind so that we can plan our transition.

 

1) We presently have inhouse software running at our facility that makes use of SQL Server.  Does Android support SQL Server, and do the development tools allow me to connect to a SQL Server database that is not locally stored?

 

2) We make heavy use of a VPN for connecting back to our offices.  Does Android support SSL VPN?

 

3) Has anyone here developed an Android app?  How difficult a transition is this coming from C# and Windows?

 

4) Are Xamarin based apps treated the same by Android as standard Android specific apps?
