+John Teacake MVC Posted September 26, 2016 MVC Share Posted September 26, 2016 (edited) Quote By Ian Johnson Court is told Tony Deadman's computer "is his life" :: He was convicted of assaulting a girl 15 years ago A sex offender, who indecently assaulted an underage girl, landed back in court after using specialist software which erases browsing history. Tony Deadman breached an indefinite order imposed on him 15 years ago for indecently assaulting an underage girl. He was handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order in 2001 after being convicted of six counts of indecent assault. However the 47-year-old breached it by using software called CCleaner on his computer which could erase data showing where he had been online. Police seized two devices - including his computer - in a two-year long investigation, the length of which was slammed by his solicitor. But at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, Deadman pleaded guilty to breaching the order, imposed on him following his conviction at Leeds Crown Court. And at Monday’s hearing, he was portrayed as a loner and a computer nut who lives his life in cyber space. “He is an isolated individual who rarely leaves his house - the computer is his life,” said the probation service. The computer at the ex-Middlesbrough man’s Beaumont Road home in North Ormesby was seized in September 2014. Continues... ----- Watch out CC Cleaner Users, Bloody idiots the MSM!! I don't think anyone, even the FBI is going to be able to recover a file that was deleted and located in freespace, after a 35 pass over-write by CCleaner. +Gary7 Subscriber² Posted September 26, 2016 Subscriber² Share Posted September 26, 2016 http://docs.bleachbit.org/doc/shred-files-and-wipe-disks.html Quote Shred files and wipe disks Normally when software deletes a file, only the "metadata" is erased: that means the complete contents can often easily be recovered, so BleachBit (and similar applications) offer secure erase features (also called secure wipe, secure overwriting, or file shredding) to permanently remove data. Some applications even advertise "advanced" erasure methods referencing important names in security such as Gutmann, the United States Department of Defense, and the NSA, but these references often mislead people to waste time on snake oil technological remedies while ignoring important basics. Any product or method suggesting a convenient, comprehensive solution to security is deceptive: convenience and security oppose each other. This guide will explain how 1 pass is enough, but 35 passes are not enough. Regardless of the tools you use, please read this guide carefully and completely. Myths and legends Most of the confusion regarding the topic of data remanence (data left behind after it is deleted) is because of myths and urban legends. Before discussing what is true, let's preview what is not: False: Data on a hard drive overwritten by one pass can be recovered by powerful government agencies False: Overwritting data with multiple passes makes it harder to recover than overwritting it with a single pass. False: Peter Gutmann thinks data should be overwritten with 35 passes to prevent recovery. False: Peter Gutmann's paper applies to modern hard drives ("modern" meaning manufactured after the year 2000 or so). False: There are methods approved by the DOD (5220.22-M), NSA, and Gutmann to shred files. False: The United States Department of Defense approves of overwriting (of a whole hard drive) as a data sanitation method. The rest can be read at the source. Why on earth would CCleaner become illegal? Are you serious or just joking? That makes absolutely zero sense. What about the other hundreds of pieces of software that do the same thing? What about the open source versions of said software? By your thoughts, browsers will probably be made illegal. I still don't understand why @Gary7 likes to split hairs so much, in EVERY SINGLE THREAD. You obviously do not understand the subject, zeroing out a drive, and keep fighting with people over something so tiny. Like @xendrome mentioned, chances are no one was recovering those files. The FBI isn't some magical creature, if you do a 35 pass wipe on a drive, no one is retrieving anything off of it. That is why these programs exsist and even the DoD uses them, heck, one of their algorithms is available within DBAN. What is this link showing? (http://docs.bleachbit.org/doc/shred-files-and-wipe-disks.html) What point is it your trying to prove exactly by just linking to that? I dont care about Hilary and her servers, if her data was wiped and recovered, they obviously did not zero out the data and instead just deleted it. Your own link says 1 pass of writing over the data (zeroing out the drive) is sufficient and powerful agencies cant even recover the data. xendrome, Jim K and +Raze 3 Share
