Dozens of Santas cycle through Twin Cities shopping centers each year, spreading joy to children who entrust them with their holiday wish lists. What has been missing from that experience, some parents say, was a Kriss Kringle who represented a wider swath of believers.

This week, for the first time in the Mall of America’s 24-year history, a black Santa will greet families for annual Christmas photos.

“This is a long time coming,” said Landon Luther, co-owner of the Santa Experience, which has run the intimate photo studio at the mall for 10 years. “We want Santa to be for everyone, period.”

The mall offers a free, wait-in-line-with-the-masses Santa, as well as the book-an-appointment Santa Experience, which this year added a second location at the Bloomington megamall. The appointments require purchase of a photo package.

Luther started a national search last spring for a diverse St. Nicholas that kids of color would be able to relate to. Santa Sid, a 20-year veteran at MOA, finally found one while at a Santa convention in Branson, Mo., where nearly 1,000 impersonators convened for a “Kringle family reunion” in July.

“Kids only see one image of Santa,” said Herbert, director of Project SPIRIT. “Even though he’s a fictional character, he could be any color, any race, any gender. This is an image of him too.”

I always laugh at how so many worry about race so much.

This made me laugh even more - (quote) "“We want Santa to be for everyone, period.” (endquote)

Are they making the claim that a white santa doesn't have that ability? Why not?

im just upset his beard is REAL :p couldnt give a monkeys ball**g what colour he is. Hes got a kind laughing face in the pic so it works for me :)

Santas a fictional character (sorry any kids reading this) and Santa wont ever be for "everyone" what about races and religions other than Christianity who do not have a "santa"

The historical figure behind Santa is St. Nicolas. I don't think he was black.

Thus this is historical negationism.

He also didn't wear red, ride a flying sleigh pulled by reindeer and more than likely wouldn't have been sliding down chimneys to deliver presents. I think we'll be ok with a black Santa. ;)

Doesn't seem to matter when it comes to depicting Jesus. St Nicholas also didn't look like what we see Santa as now so it makes little difference.

Slippery slope. Allow a little nudge and in time you'd have black founding fathers.

no he was from the land mass now known as Turkey, so probably of Moor descent.

And last time I checked the moors and Turkish descendants were not white, so technically darker skinned than "white" sorry to burst your white bubble buddy ;) your white santa in a red suit comes from Coca Cola as a lame festive advertising gimmick.

Saint Nicholas of Myra was a 4th century bishop.

You are incorrect: during this period the Roman Empire ruled what is modern day Turkey so most of the people there were mixed, some white, some darker.  Coca Cola my arse!

I'm perfectly fine with this being the case, but it smells of affirmative action style thinking. The statement isn't "We hired him because he looks like Santa regardless of his skin color." or "He could do the job, so he got the job." it's "We want to be progressive and inclusive." A publicity stunt, a marketing piece. I'd hate to be hired to be a marketing piece or anyone's token [insert demographic requirement here].

Completely agreed.  This is another prime example of the media being a big reason why racism and segregation is still a problem today.  The media forces these unnecessary social issues into our faces.

The historical St. Nicholas was from Patara, today coastal Turkey, and an ethnic Greek. Being the Bishop of Myra he most certainly wore red vestments.

Exactly. Just hire a black Santa and no one would care, really. Don't try to make it some kind of statement.

bah humbug. Santa Claus was probably a bit darker than white and Jesus was probably a bit darker than white too. Who really cares? People who want to argue either side of race that's who. But one thing is for sure, Jim West was white and never should have been played, terribly so, by Wil Smith. One of the worst movies ever made. Jim West is white, and Shaft is black. Period.

It doesnt matter that much.

If christians want to get upset - they need to read some history books.

The jesus myth was depicted from older belief systems.  Born of a virgin, on Dec 25, visited by 3 men/kings, etc..   all taken from older stories & adopted/adapted for a newer version.

Besides - he looks happy, the kid looks happy, thats all that matters.

Precisely. Unfortunately, even if their original intentions were good, these kind of articles and headlines are completely unnecessary imho.

Who is their target audience? Who have they written this for? Who cares?

- BLM and KKK symphathizers and other scum who thrive on racial hatred.

It's like these media managers are purposefully trying to raise the temperature.

And ironically, since they tend to cling to the matters that were already settled back in the 1960's, they are not being progressive, but the opposite of it. To be progressive is to move on from the things that shouldn't matter any more.

p.s. I visited the mall almost exactly ten years ago :D It's not a small one.

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 changelog: Added 'Reset to recommended' button for the Options. General fixes and improvements. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
