New Year’s Eve comet to kick off 2017

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said a comet will be flying across the sky just after sunset on Saturday.

“Say farwell to 2016 cosmic style by looking up to see the #NewYearsEve #Comet on December 31,” the lab tweeted out.

The comet, called Comet 45P or Honda-Mrkos-Pajdušáková, has been growing more prominent in the sky since mid-December and on Saturday will be visible in the western sky, according to Space.com.

Those hoping to get a glimpse of the asteroid should grab a pair or binoculars or look through a telescope for best results. Sky gazers should look just left of Saturday’s crescent moon and keep an eye out for the comet’s bluish-green head and thin fan-shaped tail, according to the website.
