NORTH POLE, Alaska, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A North Pole, Alaska, city council member who legally goes by the name "Santa Claus" had his Facebook page reinstated after proving his identity.

Claus placed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and the company as a whole on his "naughty list" after his account was shut down and the company requested his I.D. and passport to confirm his identity, TVTV reported.

"It looks like you sent us an ID that either doesn't match the information on this account or isn't on our list of acceptable IDS," an email from Facebook read. "To maintain the security of this account, we can't give you access or take any further action until we receive an acceptable ID."

Claus told the Fairbanks News-Miner he sent Facebook multiple forms of ID including copies of his passport, Alaska driver's license, his letter of appointment to the North Pole City Council and a letter of appointment to the Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission signed by Gov. Bill Walker.

"They just don't believe my name is Santa Claus or I live in North Pole," he said before his account was restored. "I just can't believe somebody, particularly on Christmas, would take me to task."

Facebook eventually reinstated Claus's account and a spokeswoman said it had been suspended by mistake.

"We're very sorry about this mistake," she said. "The account was removed in error and restored as soon as we were able to investigate. Our team processes millions of reports each week, and we sometimes get things wrong."

Claus considered switching to Twitter, but valued the more than 300,000 followers he had gathered on Facebook whom he thanked in a message after his account was restored.

"I am blessed to live in a relatively small community and have friends and neighbors and hundreds of thousands of folks who like my page who are willing to help right wrongs, perceived and real," he wrote. "My Facebook page is a labor of love, and I would never intentionally abandon you. Thank you for your understanding."
