Formula 1 World Championship 2017 Season Discussion

Driver of the Race: Lance Stroll - Rich dad aside, can't deny he had a hell of a race today.

Reject of the Race: Sebastien Vettel - Yes, Hamilton was being a dick under the safety car, but you never ever retaliate like that.

Best Race since Canada 2011.

Seb was a bit of an idiot there, I'm not sure Ham was being a dick, there was the circular speed, rpm, throttle, brake overlay on one of the replays and he didn't brake.

Seb just following too close after Ham made him look like he was driving a McLaren Honda :shifty: after the 1st restart.

Such a shame Stroll couldn't quite hang on there, but still a great result for him!

Going to be very interesting next race, I'm thinking back to Ham and Ros from (I tihnk last year) with some major Nicosteer and a lot of pushing and shoving.

I think whether Hamilton did or did not break is irrelevant - the FIA have the data and have indicated under the two safety car restarts he acted in exactly the same way.

So first, I don't believe Seb meant to hit hHamilton like he did. If you watch the footage, when he pulls out alongside Hamilton he never straightens the wheel and then throws his hand up in the air. It's that action I think probably jerked the steering wheel too much and led to the collision. HOWEVER, Seb IMO needs to do some damage limitation here and publically apologise for what he did, even if to it's to admit he did it unintentionally. Pretending like it didn't happen and focusing on Hamiltons "break test" was not the best way to handle it.

Great race though, felt bad for Stroll but that's still a great result when you think where he was in Winter testing (in the wall mostly).

Yeh, I'd agree it wasn't completely intentional, I've not seen a shot with his wheel in view, but it doesn't look like he turned in, just over-corrected after jerking out to come along side.

None the less it was an over aggressive movement to come round, especially since it wasn't a brake test.

and yes I'd also agree a public apology is in order, else maybe a penalty/points on his licence.

He's got three penalty points: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2017/06/25/vettel-handed-three-penalty-points-hamilton-clash/

He also now holds the record for most penalty points, and if he gets another three points in Austria, he'll be banned from the British Grand Prix: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2017/06/26/vettel-now-has-more-penalty-points-than-any-driver-has-ever-scored/

As for Hamilton, the FIA concluded he didn't brake-check Vettel: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130388 So all he was guilty of was slowing the field to a crawl before the restart, which - while annoying and a bit dickish - isn't against the rules.

Some of those penalty points drop off either just before or just after (i think after) the Austrian GP so he shouldn't have to worry about it for too long.

I'm a Hamilton fan so I'm probably biased but I don't think there was one thing wrong with how Hamilton drove that last sector of the track. When the Safety car is coming in, the person in the lead becomes the safety car. It is their responsibility to make sure that when they do get going they don't overtake it. The first time there was a safety car his Engineer told him he cut it too fine (although he disagreed). It's his job to slow the pack down and then go when he thinks safe, however, more likely, when it's safe AND when he thinks he'll get the best jump on number 2. If you watch the footage you can still see the Safety Car and from that "last" corner down to the pits is a hell of a long way so he had to do what he was doing.

Yeah, after; the earliest points still on his license are from last year's British GP, so if he keeps it clean in Austria, then he's in the clear for now.

After a special meeting on Monday to review Sebastian Vettel’s actions during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the FIA has concluded that the German driver is to be punished by having to read everyone’s opinions of his punishment on the internet.

‘We have carefully studied Sebastian’s incident with Lewis Hamilton in Baku,’ explained FIA spokesperson Effy Hay-Spowkespersson. ‘And we feel the most appropriate penalty we can impose is to sit him in front of a computer and make him read the endless self-righteous pontificating of armchair blog bores.’

‘Yes, we know this is extremely severe,’ Hay-Spowkespersson continued. ‘But we hope that Sebastian will have time to reflect on his recent behaviour as he slumps in front of a laptop scrolling through an apparently infinite number of self-elected experts relentlessly wanking on about bringing the sport into disrepute.’

Sources within the Ferrari team say Vettel could appeal against the FIA’s decision to make him read an unstoppable tide of pompous opinions and may ask for a less terrible punishment such as a race ban, licence suspension or being allowed to claw his own eyes out with a fork.

British Grand Prix: Silverstone set to terminate contract after 2019 race

It has not definitively happened yet, but it is now almost certain that Silverstone will in the next few days exercise an option to end its contract to host the British Grand Prix after 2019.

To those unversed in the long-running politics surrounding the race, this will sound like shocking and worrying news. To long-time observers, it will be met with a wearisome sigh - "oh no, here we go again".

Yep, I think I'll be amazed if Kvyat lasts until the end of this season. I can't recall all of the races and whether DNF's etc were all his fault or not but 4 points to Sainz 29 is not good, not to mention he's fast becoming the new Maldonado.

The future of the British Grand Prix has been left uncertain after Silverstone's owner confirmed it has activated a break clause to cease hosting the race after 2019.

Silverstone has been home to the race every year since 1987.

However, the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), which owns the circuit, says it cannot afford to host the race unless a new deal is agreed.

"We have reached the tipping point," said BRDC chairman John Grant.

"We can no longer let our passion for the sport rule our heads. We sustained losses of £2.8m in 2015 and £4.8m in 2016, and we expect to lose a similar amount this year.

"Our hope is that an agreement can still be reached, so that we can ensure a sustainable and financially viable future for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for many years to come."

Silverstone hosted the first Formula 1 race in 1950. It then shared hosting the British Grand Prix with Brands Hatch and Aintree before becoming its permanent home 30 years ago.

Unlike many other tracks on the F1 calendar, Silverstone receives no government backing.

    • Exciting! It’s amazing how hearing Japanese can naturally enhance the perceived quality of any experience or product.
    • Your other comment in another article says otherwise, namely "Microsoft veteran wants to replace every single line of C/C++ code with Rust and AI".
    • Sued and... exonerated. Oh, they learned a lesson alright. They learned that anyone who uses the word "antiturst" in conjunction with "Microsoft" is an idiot, even if that person is Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. That judge ruined the image of the US justice system. Microsoft Edge has a 5.14% market share. Also, Windows is no longer the #1 OS. None of this constitutes a monopoly. Google Chrome, however, has 70.25% share. Also, Google's Android is the #1 OS. Now that's closer to a monopoly.
