Kazakhstan has taken control of Russian assets on Baikonur spaceport, local KZ24 media reported on March 7, citing the country’s court bailiff service. The property belongs to TsENKI Center for Operation of Space Ground-based Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Russia’s Roscosmos State Corp.

From the recent SpaceX All Hands company meeting.

In 2023 SpaceX launched more satellites and tonnage, than the rest of the world combined (this includes other US launchers).

Falcon boosters have now flown up to 19 times. SpaceX is attempting to qualify them to fly up to 40 times.

It is now cheaper to insure  reused booster with 3 flights than a new booster.

They are also increasing the number of Dragon reuses, and building both a new Crew and Cargo Dragon. Growing the fleet.

SpaceX has demonstrated a 3-day pad turnaround between launches. By the end of this year they expected demonstrate a 24-hour turnaround. They can already roll a vehicle out from the hanger and launch it in 6h 33m.

SpaceX is planning on 144 to 150 missions for 2024. 

Starlink is currently launching their V2 -mini satellites on Falcon 9.

Recently StarlinK tested connecting Starlink satellites to unmodified LTE 4G devices on the ground. The first text message was sent last week, and they will soon start testing voice, data, and Internet of Things (IoT). 

This year they will start launching the much larger/powerful Starlink V3 using Starship. V3 will massively increase the speed of the network.

KSC LC-40 Crew/Cargo Dragon additions almost ready. This will allow SpaceX to launch two Dragon missions in short period of time.

Interesting because they are planning 7 Crew Dragon missions this year, and the introduction of a new spacecraft to expand the fleet to 5.

SpaceX Plug and Plaser

SpaceX president Gwynne  Shotwell announced they will be selling Starlink optical inner satellite link (IL) lasers branded Plug and Plasers which other companies can you use in their satellites. This could also allow them to link into the Starlink  constellation for backbone  or whatever

The other OSIL companies are not going to like this.

Investing in Space: What to make of SpaceX selling satellite lasers

Earlier this week SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell announced the company will begin selling “space lasers” (known formally in the industry as Optical Inter-Satellite Links, or OISLs) to other companies, commercializing a product that it’s been deploying for the last few years on its constellation of more than 5,000 Starlink satellites.

“We are going to roll out a capability, we call it ‘plug and plasers,’” Shotwell said at an industry conference.

“Unlike many companies, they don’t go chasing revenue. They tell you exactly what they’re going to build and then they will maximize revenue from that thing, whatever it is that they built,” Tripathi saids.

For the OISL market, Tripathi explained the decision of selling to other spacecraft operators who need a way to get their data back from orbit but want to do that as cheaply as possible – rather than build new ground stations on Earth or wait to connect to existing ones.

"Things are heating up w/Polaris Dawn mission. We spent last week completing most of the EVA suit acceptance test procedure. This was the first time we wore the final assembled suits as opposed to the development or training suits. There are big milestones ahead (CEIT* , vacuum chamber runs, joint sim campaign), but we are getting very close to 🚀

I suspect in a month or so there will be an unveiling."

The objectives are to 

• test a new EVA (spacewalk) spacesuit. This suit will set the pattern for their Moon and Mars suits.

• break the low Earth orbit altitude record set by Gemini 11; targeting 1400 km. This will take them into the lower Van Allen radiation belt.

• test SpaceX's new optical satellite interlink lasers (OSIL). An OSIL allows one satellite to talk to another using a laser beam, marketed to satellite builders and operators as Plug and Plaser. Instead of operators requiring ⁰their own ground station they could use Starlink to download their data. Much cheaper.

THE EXTRAVEHICULAR ACTIVITY (EVA) SUIT

In February 2022, Jared Isaacman and SpaceX announced the Polaris Program, an effort designed to rapidly advance human spaceflight capabilities, while also supporting important causes here on Earth.

Polaris Dawn, the first of the program’s three human spaceflight missions, is targeted to launch to orbit no earlier than summer 2024. During the five-day mission, the crew will perform SpaceX’s first-ever Extravehicular Activity (more commonly known as an EVA or spacewalk) from Dragon, which will also be the first-ever commercial astronaut spacewalk. This historic milestone will also be the first time four astronauts will be exposed to the vacuum of space at the same time.

Supporting the crew throughout the spacewalk will be SpaceX’s newly-developed EVA suit, an evolution of the Intravehicular Activity (IVA) suit crews currently wear aboard Dragon human spaceflight missions. Developed with mobility in mind, SpaceX teams incorporated new materials, fabrication processes, and novel joint designs to provide greater flexibility to astronauts in pressurized scenarios while retaining comfort for unpressurized scenarios. The 3D-printed helmet incorporates a new visor to reduce glare during the EVA in addition to the new Heads-Up Display (HUD) and camera that provide information on the suit’s pressure, temperature, and relative humidity. The suit also incorporates enhancements for reliability and redundancy during a spacewalk, adding seals and pressure valves to help ensure the suit remains pressurized and the crew remains safe.

All of these enhancements to the EVA suit are part of a scalable design, allowing teams to produce and scale to different body types as SpaceX seeks to create greater accessibility to space for all of humanity.

While Polaris Dawn will be the first time the SpaceX EVA suit is used in low-Earth orbit, the suit’s ultimate destiny lies much farther from our home planet. Building a base on the Moon and a city on Mars will require the development of a scalable design for the millions of spacesuits required to help make life multiplanetary.

    • NVIDIA announces 35 new AI HPC supercomputers across Europe by Fiza Ali NVIDIA has announced that 35 AI high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers are planned to open throughout Europe this year. This marks what the company describes as the largest single-year expansion of AI infrastructure in the history of the continent. These new systems, unveiled at ISC High Performance 2026, will be placed at a number of national supercomputing centres, AI factories, and research institutes to provide advanced computing resources to more than three million researchers. Describing AI, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated, "AI is the new instrument of science, and Europe is building the infrastructure to put it in the hands of millions of researchers." Built on NVIDIA's Blackwell and Hopper architectures, the new systems will support research in climate science, healthcare, clean energy, quantum computing, and other scientific fields. Among the major projects are the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's MareNostrum 5 AI upgrade, BavariaAI's Blue Swan platform in Germany, Italy's IT4LIA AI factory, Germany's HammerHAI project, and Sweden's Mimer AI Factory. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center plans to expand MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 and GB200 NVL4 systems. In total, the BSC expects to deliver up to 20 exaflops of AI training performance and 33 exaflops of AI inference performance. This increased computational capability will support research efforts related to climate modelling, biotechnology, energy systems, etc. Furthermore, as part of the IT4LIA project, more than 8,000 GPUs, each based on NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL4 architecture, will be used in Italy. This represents one of the largest AI factory initiatives announced to date. Additionally, the Blue Swan platform from BavariaAI will include about 1,000 GPUs to help develop multimodal AI models for use in the medical field, robotics, and various areas of scientific research. NVIDIA also emphasized in the announcement how rapidly growth of accelerated computing usage is taking place within both energy and climate-related research. The company said Siemens Energy uses NVIDIA-powered technologies to significantly accelerate the process of designing and simulating hydrogen-capable gas turbines. Using those same acceleration technologies, Siemens was able to reduce simulation time by up to 77 percent. The company also highlighted several quantum computing initiatives across Europe. CINECA, EuroHPC, and Pasqal are integrating a quantum processing unit into Italy's CINECA supercomputing centre using NVIDIA's CUDA-Q platform. Meanwhile, researchers at Germany's Julich Supercomputing Centre recently simulated a universal 50-qubit quantum computer on the JUPITER supercomputer. The announcement demonstrates Europe's continued commitment to building out its infrastructure supporting AI and supercomputing as governments, research organizations, and technology companies compete to build out their respective computing capacities and secure their positions in advanced scientific research.
    • It's about to become harder to turn off your Samsung TV, thanks to Instagram by Aditya Tiwari Meta announced that its Instagram for TV app has arrived on Samsung TVs in the US as part of its latest expansion, giving users one more way to scroll through Reels. The social media giant often comes under scrutiny for the "addictiveness" of its features, which leads people to spend excessive time on the platform. Interestingly, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri described spending 16 hours on the platform as "problematic use" but not "clinical addiction." Mosseri also compared scrolling on Instagram to binge-watching a show on Netflix. Instagram for TV is now available on Samsung TV models released in 2020 or later. The app is already available on Amazon Fire TV and Google TV in the US, which together account for the majority of connected TV devices. The company said it will test several new features to improve the living room and family experience while using Instagram on the big screen. Watching vertical videos on a big screen isn't something many would be excited about. Probably that's why Meta is testing a dedicated home for horizontal videos. Creators will get the opportunity to design content for TV screens and get more ways to reach audiences, according to Meta. If you found an interesting Reel while doomscrolling on your phone, you'll be able to cast it to your TV. The feature is available for testing on Instagram for TV on Google TV and Amazon Fire TV, and it will also support videos from the Saved tab. Instagram for TV will be testing Channels organized around user interests, across genres such as comedy and sports, as well as content from favorite creators. Moreover, you can watch Stories on your TV. While Instagram is known for short-form videos, it's knocking on more doors to keep the audience hooked. The company said it's exploring new content formats for the big screen, including long-form creator content to cover topics in detail, episodic series to build suspense across multiple episodes, and creator live sessions on TV. All of the new updates put Instagram in competition with established giants like YouTube (and Netflix), which already have a robust presence on the big screen. In recent updates, Instagram added the ability to write an individual caption for each carousel image, manually re-order posts, and a paid version of the app.
    • I know RAM and storage prices are high right now, but I think it would have been better to have 1TB as the base level storage, especially as it's supposed to be for gaming. Plus a 2.5gbe ethernet port rather than only 1gbe.
