Dad arrested for breaking traffic laws in rushing daughter to hospital; nurses bond him out

CENTREVILLE, Ill. - An act of kindness still has a local father smiling.

Darius Hinkle said a group of local nurses bonded him out of jail after he was arrested for breaking traffic laws while rushing his daughter to the hospital. He said the nurses work at Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville.

Hinkle admitted he does not have a valid driver’s license and said he was speeding on the way to the hospital on Thursday, but said he did it because his 1-year-old daughter was choking on a penny. He said by the time he arrived at the hospital, more than a handful of police officers with different agencies were behind him.

Hinkle said he was taken into custody once he arrived at the hospital. The 1-year-old's mother said she arrived at the jail when a woman she didn't recognize was there to bond Hinkle out. That’s when she learned a group of nurses chipped in money to bond the father out.

The guy should be arrested.  Putting the safety of others at risk is never justified.

Indeed, but I would also assume the judge will be lenient with the guy, due to the circumstances.

AGAIN, I was agreeing that he was arrested.  As in , ANYONE doing this should be arrested.  Seems people just like to skim replies to threads on THIS site.

The law is not some iron rod, unable to flex at times of need.  Sure the guy broke some laws, but try to find a parent who would NOT act to do all they could to save the life of their child.  I don't expect him to get off without punishment, but I would be very surprised if the judge threw the book at the him.  Most likely he'll get a modest fine and maybe some form of community service order.

 

Perhaps you didn't bother to read the full post and thus didn't see the circumstances of his law breaking?

Oh. Well in that case, try working on how you say things because I am only one of many who thought the same thing. I know English is hard but I have faith that you can improve. 

 

Have an example that actually conveys proper meaning, free of charge: 

 

The guy deserved to be arrested.  Putting the safety of others at risk is never justified.

As I've been told by many Americans... Sometimes you live too far away for 911 to help.

 

Also, sometimes you just PANIC.  I guess you're not a parent though and can't understand the pure terror you go through when your child's life is at risk.

It's a tough call to make, especially when you're in panic mode.  For choking, if you're thinking straight, the best thing to do is to try to clear the obstruction first but many people don't know how.  In that case, dialing 911 first would be best as then someone can tell you what to do.

 

But that requires you not to panic.  Good luck finding a non-panicking parent when their child is choking.

Yep, panicked father ... easier to scoop up a child and rush them to a hospital vs. agonizingly waiting for an ambulance while your little girl is suffocating. 

 

I hope the law goes easy on him ... slaps his wrist and instructs him to attend a BLS course (which all parents should have).

That is so very true, I live ~3 miles from the fire department, so the ETA for them to get here could be ~10 minuets or so, not to mention that in this city no one seems to understand when you see lights, move right, and there are also 18 speed bumps from the entrance of our mobile home park to our location, so that will slow them down as well. Also as a parent I do understand the terror and panic you feel when your child is sick or injured all you want is for them to be better and sometimes (well, most of the time) you tend to overlook the most obvious course of action. Whereas I am not suggesting that what this father did is acceptable, I can also see why he did what he did.

If I was the father, I would call first 911 and let them know that I am on my way to the hospital to save my baby girl and I may brake traffic laws and I will need to be escort it. So at least the 911 operator can alert police and let them know of my intention.

I've been a certified first aider for many many years, but one of the first things I did when my wife first became pregnant was to take a refresher course with a supplement on very young children.

agreed, however, there is SOME things that are more deserving of leniency then others. This most certainly is the top reason.

It's never easy when you see your child in distress.. much less someone else's, or even in full blown panic mode such as choking.

 

Child safety courses such as CPR, car safety, home safety etc.. are there to take.  Even online.  Some may be provided free of charge.  I would highly recommend it if it is.  

 

When I was in scuba diving class, we had to take two CPR classes and pass.  Those for children to teens, and then teens to adults.

When my child was born, and he was born in California, the hospital required us to take a child's CPR class/Car safety (heavy on the car seat instructions) before we could take him home.  Required by law since he was a premie.  (born 3 months early due to complications)

Gotta remember that mentality around people that they'll put family first over anyone else if it comes to survival. If you see someone with family, remember that they'll most likely ditch you the first chance they get (unless you know them).

 

So he didn't bother dialing 911 on the way to the hospital and didn't pull over to quickly explain in panic he needs to get his kid to the hospital (pretty high chance the cops would see and understand the situation quickly if not some of them knowing CPR or heimlich maneuver) so he could get an escort. He could've also just waited for an ambulance to arrive for possibly the same amount of time he took to drive to the hospital. So many methods he could've chosen but he choose the most risk driven. He's lucky he made it without causing an accident and making everything x10 worse.

 

No valid drivers license, no basic CPR skills, sounds like a bad parent all around.
