It is very possible that he could be alive. Or he is somewhere else.  Eleven lost her powers so she can't see.  TBD if she gets them back, though she probably will.

1.5-2yrs.  They aren’t yearly, usually 1.5 years out.   Might be Christmas 2020 when we see the next.

Right before the reactor thing exploded, he jumped into the crack to the Upside Down. We'll find in the next season that he's been lost in the Upside Down for some undetermined amount of time (probably several Earth years) but then he'll be found and captured by the Russians. The Russians had another crack to the Upside Down from another point in Russia. So now we have multiple entry points; he was discovered and captured and now he's being held captive.

Yea, but the Russians could not open a stable crack and why they had to go to the US to the source.

He's obviously "The American" referenced in the post-credit scene.  I mean, it's pretty implicit.
